How Stargate DSL works

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a technology that enables a high-speed voice and data connection over

existing telephone infrastructure. Most homes already have phone wiring that can support DSL, so no re-

wiring or changes are needed.

DSL takes advantage of unused frequencies on your phone line. This allows the ‘always on’ connection

without interfering with your telephone or fax machine even when in use. The lower frequency portion of

the phone line is used for voice. DSL uses the upper frequencies to allow much faster uploads and

downloads powering your Internet experience. From your PC, the DSL modem converts the data signals of

your computer and sends them over the phone line to the Central Office maintained by your local

telephone company. The Central Office separates the voice and data signals. A DSLAM (Digital Subscriber

Line Access Multiplexer) takes the data signal and sends it along with other local customer’s data to

Stargate.

STEP-BY-STEP ORDER PROCESS GUIDE

STEP ONE: PREPARING YOUR LINE FOR DSLStargate places an order to prepare your line for DSL service. Each local carrier Stargate partners with estimates delivery time for xDSL service. Please check the list below to get an idea of when service will be active on your line. This is the estimated time of arrival for circuit delivery, unless otherwise indicated by your sales representative.

Verizon/GTE Territory 10 business daysNorth Pittsburgh Territory 5-7 business days

STEP TWO: SETTING UP YOUR DSL EQUIPMENTOnce your line has been prepared for DSL, you will need to set up your DSL equipment.

A. Install your filters To eliminate the problem of line noise, telephone filters have been provided to you as part of your modem kit. Each filter should be connected between your telephone jack and any device using the phone line, such as fax machines, digital cable boxes, satellite receivers, and cordless phones.

DO NOT PUT A FILTER BETWEEN THE WALL JACK AND THE DSL MODEM. THIS WILL FILTER OUT THE DSL SIGNAL AND PREVENT YOU FROM CONNECTING.

Additional Filters: If you are using a Westell modem, please visit www.westell.com to purchase filters online. If you are using a Paradyne modem, visit www.stargate.net and complete the "contact us" form. Please be sure to include the number of filters you require.

B. Setting up the modemThe modem kit includes instructions for setting up your modem. Please follow the included instructions. If you need assistance, please contact technical support.

STEP THREE: SETTING UP YOUR COMPUTERAfter you have finished installing your hardware, you can proceed with adding your network settings to your PC/MAC. The following pages include instructions for the Operating Systems supported by Stargate.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This document provides instructions for setting up a single computer. If you are using a router, please refer to your router manual for instructions or visit the DSL section of our online support site at http://help.stargate.net.

Getting Connected

This is the Westell PPPoE Shim – the interface you will use to connect to Stargate. To make the connection, select Home on the menu and select Stargate DSL (connection to Stargate) and click Connect. When you have successfully connected, the PPP Status indicator will change from DOWN to UP.

Note: If the status reads No DSL Connection, check the physical connection. If a Connect button is not displayed, DSL sync has not been established. Check the DSL LED on the DSL Router. If it is not solid green, please contact Stargate technical support.

To set your DSL to connect automatically, click the Profile Editor link, and click the Edit link for your Stargate DSL connection. Select the Always On radio button, verify that the Save Password option is checked, and click the Save button.

Stargate recommends you do not change any other settings available in the configuration screens without direct instruction by a Stargate technician. Changing these settings may cause your DSL connection to not work properly or be inaccessible.

Support and Troubleshooting DSL

Restarting your computerIn most cases, simple errors or connection problems can be corrected by restarting the computer and DSL modem. This practice clears the computer memory and refreshes the computer hardware. Shut down the computer and unplug or turn off the DSL modem for a full five (5) minutes, then turn the DSL modem and computer back on in that order.

No Ethernet/USB LightFirst, shut down the computer then unplug or turn off the DSL modem for a full five (5) minutes. Restart the computer and turn on the DSL modem. Verify that the Ethernet cable is firmly connected to the computer and to the DSL modem.

No Power LightVerify that the DSL modem power cord is plugged in securely. If the power cord is plugged into a surge protector or power strip, plug it directly into a wall outlet. If the power light remains off, the modem or power cord may be damaged.

No Ready Light or flashing Ready lightCheck the phone line connections. Turn the modem off or unplug the power supply to the modem for a full five (5) minutes. Remove any phone filters between the DSL modem and the wall jack. Do not run the telephone line through a surge protector or line splitter. Try replacing the phone cord. If the line light/ready light does not appear solid after five (5) minutes, please contact Technical Support.

Excess noise on your phone lineAll telephones, answering machines, digital cable boxes, fax machines and other telephone devices should have a single line filter placed between the device and the wall telephone jack. If all items on the telephone system are filtered, try unplugging one item at a time to rule out another device causing the line noise. DO NOT PUT A FILTER BETWEEN THE WALL JACK AND THE DSL MODEM.

Other InterferenceSplitters, surge protectors, halogen lamps, Christmas lights and other electronic devices that emit Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) may cause problems. If you have exhausted other options, disconnect or turn off any electronic device in the same room as your DSL modem and remove splitters or surge protectors.

Security and your DSL Line

Security on your home computer is extremely important when using a broadband connection. NAT (Network Address Translation) technology routinely assigns you a different IP address (Internet Protocol) effectively securing your computer against unwanted attacks. NAT provides added security, but it is not the only protection you should use while online, especially if you have a static IP address. Your Operating System should be updated on a regular basis whether or not it is the most recent version. Updates for Windows can be found at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Macintosh users can check for updates at http://www.info.apple.com/support/downloads. For further security measures you may also want to consider one or more of the following products1:

Anti-virus SoftwareProducts from vendors such as Mcafee and Symantec (Norton) provide continuous protection against viruses, Trojans and other malicious programs. Each product offers different options and levels of protection but must be updated frequently to be effectual. New viruses are discovered weekly, and you want to make sure you are always protected.

Software FirewallsSoftware firewalls are programs that limit external access to your computer by following a set of rules. These rules can provide a range of protection from preventing Trojans attacks to completely prohibiting access to your computer. Programs such as ZoneAlarm and BlackIce are an inexpensive means of providing effective filtering against unwanted attacks.

Hardware Firewall / RoutersHardware firewalls are more difficult to install and configure than a software firewall. However, for uses like small offices or networks, hardware firewalls are a good choice for their solid performance and reliability.
