Greetings! Winter is (hopefully) winding down, and here at the Ranger Station business is picking up. We are still using snowshoes to work in the woods, but fire season preparation is in full swing. While our staff is busy attending refresher training and readying fire gear, there are a few things you can do as well. As the spring wildfire season approaches, take a few minutes to assess your property for fire hazards. Remember, the most important person in protecting a house from wildfire is not a firefighter, but the property owner! Preventative action taken by the owner before the wildfire occurs is critical. A few quick fixes that can have a huge impact are: - Keep flammables like lumber and firewood at least 30 feet from buildings. Move firewood piles out from under the deck. Clean out all areas that are a natural trap for leaves and pine needles, such as against the foundation, a windowsill or ledge, and under the deck or stairs. A flying ember can land in these fuel rich locations and bring the fire up against your home. Remove tree branches that extend over the roof. Help your neighbors to do the same thing! - During spring cleanup, mulching or chipping of yard waste is preferred (just don't place those materials next to your home). If you do elect to burn, ensure you obtain a burning permit, either at the Ranger Station, a local Emergency Fire Warden, online, or by phone. Follow those restrictions on the permit, and check conditions prior to burning every time by calling 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876), or by checking online after 11:00 AM at dnr.wi.gov keyword "fire". Most often, if burning is allowed that day, the window will not be until after 6:00 PM when the fire weather has laid down for the day. As the snow leaves us and we enjoy the warmer weather of spring, stop by the station for your annual burn permit, information on creating a defensible space around your home, or just to chat. I am available to visit your property to walk through and discuss the home ignition zone and ways to improve your fire preparedness. You can reach the station at (715) 795-2565 or reach me on my work mobile at (715) 308-1025 if I am out and about. Wishing you a safe spring from the WI DNR Barnes Ranger Station. President’s Letter

Here we are in the middle of the winter season. Snow has come early and in large quantities. Snowmobilers and skiers, as well as the local businesses, are very happy. This past fall, the new septic system on the island was completed. It serves the Caretaker, Cedarwood and the Wannigan. The campground has new electricals inside the shower/toilet building, as well as new towers for campers using electrical hookups. The plumbing for the new showers, toilets, and sinks is complete and will be ready to use this summer. The rental rates are included in this Drumbeat issue. The road is in fair condition but will be worked on in the spring. The board has also decided to keep the cabin rental rates the same as last year. This summer I would like to see some of the cabins painted or stained on the outside. The horse swings on the playground also need to be repainted. Volunteer help will be needed for these projects. Please contact me or any board member to let us know if you can help. No date has been set since owners are here at variable times. This summer, I suspect the lakes will be higher than any time in recorded history. This is going to create problems for everyone. First, shorelines are going to be impacted by erosion. Second, docks are going to be difficult to be placed, if at all. Third, the causeway over the lake leading to the island will have to be monitored carefully for erosion. It may need to have work done to it to protect it from possible collapse. Hopefully, the level of the lake does not come over the causeway. Options to protect lake assets are being considered by the board. I would ask all owners and guests who use recreational boats on the lake to keep speeds down to reduce wakes. Also, keeping a good distance from the causeway will help. Please remember that Island Lake is our most precious asset of PPOA and we all need to help protect it. Included with the Drumbeat is an event calendar. Dates of interest are the picnic on July 18, and two chipping days scheduled on June 6 and September 5. Thanks to Rob Lynch for updating the PPOA website. It has an updated look and new information for owners. I encourage all to visit the website at potawatamipropertyowners.com. Thanks, Rob for your hard work. I would also like to thank Drumbeat sponsors and businesses for their support. I encourage everyone to support these businesses whenever possible. Finally, I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season with family and friends. The board worked hard this past year to try to make things better for PPOA owners and guests and I wish to thank them all. I hope everyone has an enjoyable winter—wherever you are—and, hopefully, we will see you this summer for volunteer work or just plain fun. Rick Tello Board President
