• Drugs: substances other than food that change the structure or the function of the body or mind.

• Medicine: drugs that are used to treat or prevent diseases and or other conditions.

• Antibiotic: medicines that reduce or kill harmful bacteria in the body.• Side Effects: any reaction to a medicine other than the one

intended.• Tolerance: a person’s body becomes used to the effect of a

medicine and needs greater amounts of it to be effective.• Prescription Medicine: medicines that can be sold only with a written

order from a physician.• Over-the-Counter Medicines (OTC): medicines that are safe enough

to be taken without a written order from a physician.

1. First researchers discover a new drug.

2. Next the researchers conduct animal tests.

3. Then the FDA reviews information and animal test results.

4. After that clinical trials occur on humans.

5. If the drug is found safe and effective, manufacturer applies to FDA for approval.

6. Then the FDA tests the drug.

7. Finally if the FDA approves the drug, the drug becomes available.

may be dangerous or

even deadly!

Some of the reactions

that might occur are:

have a stronger effect.

The medicines

combined may have

unexpected effects.

Also the medicines

may cancel out each

others expected

effects.

Do not use OTC for more than ten days without

medical supervisions.

Do not share prescription medicine.

Destroy medications that have passed their

expiration date.

Keep medicines safely sealed in a childproof

container and out of the reach of children.

NEVER take medication with alcohol!!!

Never take two or more medicines at the same

time without your doctors approval

Stimulants: drugs that speed up the body’s

functions.

Amphetamines: drugs prescribed to stimulate

the central nervous system.

Narcotics: prescription medicines that are

used to relieve pain.

Effects:• reduces memory, reaction time, and

coordination• reduces initiative and ambition

• increases heart rate and appetite, and lowers body temperature

• damages heart and lungs• interferes with normal body development

in teens by changing hormone levels • may cause psychological dependence

• PCP: convulsions, heart and lung failure, or broken blood vessels; bizarre or violent behavior; temporary psychosis; false feeling of having super powers

• LSD: unpredictable behavior; flashbacks; false feeling of having super powers

• Injectable Drugs: possible HIV infection or hepatitis

• Detoxification: the physical process of freeing the body of an addictive drug.
