November is a relativelyquiet month mainly due to poorweather conditions and shorter daylighthours. Plant your tulip bulbs this month,

someTulipspersistyear toyear,someperformless welland aretreated

as bedding, and replaced every year. Now is also the last chance to plant outwinter bedding. You could trywallflowers, forget-me-nots, Bellis,Primula, Viola (winter pansies) andother spring bedding plants, plantingthem into well- prepared ground, orpots of suitable compost. Ornamentalgrasses and bamboos can be cut backand tidied up at this time of year. It isstill a good time to lift and divideovergrown clumps of herbaceousperennials.Lift andstoredahlias, cannas andtuberousbeddingbegoniasthat havebeen hit bythe first frosts. Large tubs that are atrisk of cracking in the frost should becovered with bubble wrap, hessian orfleece, to insulate them over the winter

also raise containers onto feet orbricks to avoid them sitting in thewet as drainage is essential atthis time of the year. Apply anautumn mulch to protect plantsthat are borderline hardy such asAgapanthus, and

ownleaves, of the red hot pokers canbe tied up and used as protectionfor the crown. Have a good cleanup removing leaves and debrisbetween plants as this willprovide a good place for slugs andsnails. Fill in gaps in flower borderswith small, pot-grownherbaceous perennials andalpines, They aren’texpensive at this time of yearand if planted now will makean impact in spring

Collect and dispose ofall fallen rose leaves, especially those that arediseased and infected with afungus such as Black spot.

DO NOT place rose leaves onthe compost heap. Bin themor burn them! Prune tallroses by one third to avoidwind rock damage. As longas the ground is not towaterlogged or frozen youcan plant herbaceousperennials, shrubs, hedging, deciduous trees roses and

fruit trees. Bonfire night is a good time toburn your unwanted cuttings andleaves, Make sure there aren't any

hedgehogs, or other animals inamongst your debris. If you would like

toencouragebirds intoyour gardenthroughoutthe wintermonths youneed tocreate abird friendly

environment. Clean bird baths, orprovide a clean source of water if thereis a frost, put out bird food and fat balls. And finally sit back relax andplan your next years garden andchanges doing as much research aspossible to get it right first time. If youneed any advise or quality plants andshrubs come and visit us at Doncasterroad , langold, S819QL or give me a callon 07979377570 always happy to help.www.johnsplants.com

Ensure you don’t become one ofsociety’s lonely old peopleThe Health Secretary Jeremy Huntrecently made the shockingannouncement that up to a millionelderly people are being consignedto a life of loneliness and ill healthbecause of society’s shamefulfailure to take responsibility forolder relatives. This shocking announcementrevealed a much deeper problem insociety – the fact that millions ofpeople have not made financialprovision for their old age, givingthem the financial means tosocialise and remain active. This, according to financial advisorsCheetham Jackson based onSaltergate in Chesterfield, can beattributed to three commonmistakes many people make:Relying on savings in a bank

account to provide for themfinancially in their old ageBeing scared to spend their moneyfor fear they won’t have enoughSpending their money too soon, especially a lump sum usually paidwhen a pension matures.Michael Heath, Director ofCheetham Jackson, explained:

“These common errors are causingpeople to spend their retirementliving on the breadline. Too manypeople assume that putting yourmoney in a bank account willprovide an income in old age. However, what we have seen in thelast few years are poor bank returnsof typically 1.5% on long termsavings which, when set against 3%inflation, means your money isactually losing value before youeven retire.”Often it is down to the fear ofinvesting and losing all their moneythat prevents people from properlypreparing financially for theirretirement. However, Michaeladvises that most people areinvestors and don’t even know it.He adds: “Even a normal bankaccount is a form of investment.Rather than relying on the poorreturn from a bank account people

should make their savings workharder now through properstructured investment in order toprovide for their old age.”Rather than making high risk,short-term investments, CheethamJackson believes in taking along-term view on financialplanning and spreadinginvestments broadly. This means thecompany relies on proveneconomics and market researchrather than guess work and the‘hope it works’ mentality. In anutshell, Cheetham Jacksonformulates considered, proveninvestment plans that ensure along-term healthy return on money.

“We believe investment should below risk and long-term to ensure aguaranteed return that isn’tadversely affected by dips in theeconomy or recession,” explainedMichael. It’s never too soon to start investingproperly in your future. For expertadvice contact Cheetham Jacksonon 01246 205016 or call in to theoffice every Thursday during its freedrop-in advice session from 12pm –2.00pm.

Children in the nursery class atChesterfield’s Abercrombie PrimarySchool have been able to end theirlatest project in style with a little helpfrom Miller Homes Midlands. Since the beginning of term, theyoungsters have been learning allabout houses and how they are built. To help bring their lessons to life, thechildren were paid a visit by MillerHomes production director MalcolmCeney, contracts manager Paul Sweetand Garry Bowler, site manager fromMiller’s nearby development ThePortlands. Malcolm, Paul and Garrybrought along a number of itemsfound on a building site, includingbricks, mortar, a selection of toolsand roof tiles. They even kitted theclass out in mini hi-vis vests andhardhats for the session, and parkeda forklift truck outside the school.

As teacher FayeHall comments, thelesson was the perfectway to end the project:

“Since the beginning ofSeptember we’ve beentalking about buildersand the type of materialsthey use to build thehomes we live in. It was great thatthe team from Miller Homes was ableto support us and actually bringsome of those items into class.

“Children always learn best when theyare able to see and experience thingsfirst hand.” Malcolm Ceney added: “Thechildren actually knew a lot aboutbuilding and were able to answer lotsof the questions we asked them. Asa housebuilder, it’s important for usto get involved with and support thegreat work that’s going on in the

communities we’re working in.“I definitely think we have somebudding young builders atAbercrombie Primary School.” Miller Homes’ development ThePortlands is based just off SheffieldRoad and offers a selection of homes, with prices starting from £159,950. There’s a lot of talk at the moment about propertyprices being at their highest level for a number ofyears, but is this a true reflection of our local area?

The Office For National Statistics have reported an increaseof 3.8% across England compared to August 2012, butthese figures are influenced by the London market, whichhas risen by 8.7% over the last 12 months.

If we break down the figures to show the local areas, thestory is quite different.

In Derbyshire there are 2 extremes with Chesterfieldshowing a 7.7% increase, but Derbyshire Dales showing a7.8% decrease.

In South Yorkshire Rotherham increased by 4.8%, whereasSheffield saw a 7.3% decrease.

In Nottinghamshire Newark & Sherwood witnessed a largeincrease of 10.8%, but Ashfield District saw prices drop by2.9%

As you can see the generalisation of the property marketincreasing throughout the country gives a false impressionof what is actually happening on the doorstep

Experts are forecasting that house prices will rise by 6.6%during the next 12 months, but are saying that it will thenstart to level off again, and the risk of another propertybubble is minimal.

The Bank Of England has suggested recently that the baserate will stay at 0.5% for the whole of 2014, which is goodnews for mortgage repayments. This combined with theGovernments push on affordable housing may helpfirst-time buyers to get their feet on the ladder. We will just have to wait and see.

When using an agent to manage yourproperty, make sure you check theon-line marketing descriptions andpictures, to ensure they meet yourexpectations.A more detailed description and goodpictures will attract more interest thanpoor quality photo’s and a few linesof text.

When looking for a place to rent, think about the detail the agent orlandlord has put into the marketingdescription.

If someone puts the effort andattention to detail into theirmarketing, they are more likely to puteffort and attention to detail inregards to other aspects of yourtenancy.

JUDGE JANE...Christmas is coming and

with it the pressure to eat, drink and bemerry. I say pressure because this yearit will be particularly hard to feel merryfor many people especially those hithard by the rising cost of living. Thepressures experienced by individualsand families vary widely but, if I was togeneralise I would say most ordinarypeople are making “adjustments” totheir lifestyles. The difference will beto what extent, how and why?

I have a friend whoconfided in me recently that she andher husband are “struggling” which forthem means eating out twice a monthrather than weekly. I find this sort ofconversation difficult at the best oftimes as these friends are very wealthyby any standards so to avoid causingoffence I find myself exploring the topicof what we mean by “struggling” on theoff chance I could bemisunderstanding her.

It is my friends view that;both she and her husband haveworked hard to achieve a certainlifestyle and being forced to adapt tosocialising less often or to visit lessexpensive eateries is to admit defeat. It is particularly strange to me they holdthese views as we were at primaryschool together and grew up in fairlyclose proximity and I know both arefrom relatively poor backgrounds. Theone single benefit both my friendsenjoyed which was not available totheir parents or their children was agrant aided University education. Bothgraduated to careers in finance at a

time when that was a growth industry. They took advantage of consistentlyhigh salaries, annual bonus paymentsand contacts in the right places toexpand their wealth. The economicslump has meant these benefits are nolonger as regular or predictable andinvestment is risky so they feelinsecure and vulnerable.

At a certain point in thediscussion my friend crossed aboundary with me when she said sheconsidered throwing in the job to live alife on benefits, with no responsibilityexcept a weekly trip to a food bank. I’mshocked but not surprised this is herview as we are bombarded daily withthis false set of messages from TV,radio and other news media. It was theNazi propagandist Joseph Goebbelswho said that “If you tell a lie bigenough and keep repeating it, peoplewill eventually come to believe it. Thelie can be maintained only for suchtime as the State can shield the peoplefrom the political, economic and/ormilitary consequences of the lie. It thusbecomes vitally important for the Stateto use all of its powers to repressdissent, for the truth is the mortalenemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of theState.”

My former friend is notpersuaded by the truth even when shesees it in writing. She remains of theview Job Seekers Allowance would besufficient to maintain her livingstandards because that is what is

implied in all the media reports aboutthose dependent on state support. In another part of my life I havefriends who also work very hard but, have insecure jobs and/or earn smallwages despite having trained for acareer. I rarely hear them complainother than to express their frustrationat being criticised or misrepresented inthe media when they strike for betterpay and conditions because theirwages are so low they are at timesunable even to afford to travel to work.Cycling across the city to work is onlypossible if you can afford a bicycle! This group of friends interpret the word“struggle” to mean having no money topay for a safe, warm home with regularmeals. Yet, it is this group of friendswho will be out and about at Christmasdonating their time, skills andfriendship to those they consider “lessfortunate”.

It’s just my opinion!

Becky’s Movie PreviewsNow we’re getting towards

the end of the year, we will startto see some contenders for theOscars. There are some greatfilms to see at the cinemathis month so let’s take alook.

Coming Soon…

Robert De Niro just can’t stayaway from films surrounding theMafia, gangsters and organisedcrime. Well, if it isn’t broke… as thesaying goes.

This time it’s a comedy crimefilm with De Niro as a former mafiaboss who after making a mistakeand finding out there’s a hit on himand his family, decides to turn

informant on his boss. Then heand his family are put intowitnessprotection. They find themselvesin France with FBI agentStansfield ( )keeping supervision. Although itseems as the behaviour thefamily are accustomed to, isn’teasy to let go. Bribery, extortion, explosions and general badbehaviour are rife and soon theycatch the attention of those whostill hold a grudge. It isn’t longbefore hitmen are coming totown for a visit.

De Niro is supported byMichelle Pfeiffer (

) as his wife and Glee’sDiana Agron as his

daughter.

The Family

One of the most famoushigh school prom scenes iscoming back to our screens.Originally released in 1976, weget to see again thehaunting tale of a lonely girl whogets pushed too far when aprank is pulled on her at the highschool prom involving pig’sblood. With this beingthe remake therewon’t be any surprisesplot-wise, but with theadvancement in specialeffects we should be in

for a visual treat. Heading thecast as the girl withtelekinesis is Chloe Grace Moretz( ) and JulianneMoore ( ) asCarrie’s religion-obsessed mother.

Carrie

Everyone knows MaryPoppins. Whether you hate it orcan’t wait for it to be shown everyChristmas, you know the story ofthe magical nanny who likes tosing a song or two. But whateveryone may not know is that thefilm was almost never made in thefirst place. The person who wrotethe book, P.L Travers was resistantto her beloved characters to beturned into a farce.

For 2 weeks in 1961, Traversreluctantly spent with Walt Disneyin LA as he tried to win her over. She was played songs by TheSherman Brothers, including aspoonful of sugar and let’s go fly akite.

She was an Australian-bornEnglish author and he was thecreator of the ‘happiest place onearth’. They couldn’t be more

different from each other. Then the real story behindMary Poppins is discoveredwith very personal ties to Traversthat brings reason and purposebehind her reluctance.

Walt Disney is played by TomHanks (Forrest Gump, Cast Away)and Emma Thompson (Sense andSensibility, Love, Actually) is P.LTravers. The pair a superb togetherand bring their real lifecounterparts to life as though weare back in the 60’s when it allbegan.

In reality, Travers disliked thefilm version so much she neverallowed any more Mary Poppinsbooks to be made into film. Butseeing it all played out may giveaudiences a reason behind herdecisions.

Coming from the director ofThe Queen ( ) wehave a tale of separation andheartache starring the unlikelypairing of Judi Dench and SteveCoogan. Coogan (

) plays Martin Sixsmith,a former journalist turnedgovernment advisor who findshimself without a job. He thenhears of a woman with a ratherinteresting story to tell. Althoughresistant at first, he decides to writea human interest story about her.Her name is Philomena played byDench ( ) andwhen she was young she wasforced to give up her child foradoption as she had him out ofwedlock and she was a Catholic inIreland. After her son’s 50th

birthday she decides she would liketo try and find him at long last. Andso they both go on the journeytogether to discover whateverhappened to her son. AlthoughPhilomena may struggle with whatshe may discover.

It may seem like a bit of anunusual pairing, Alan Partridge andM from Bond, but it seems to workfor the story. A heart warming talethat will be well worth a look.

Saving Mr Banks

Philomena
