We all know that technological advances are costing some people their jobs, but

are they creating jobs too?



Innovation Is Our Future

No one is debating the fact that the march of progress is unstoppable. In fact it is the very fact that we keep coming up with new ways to make ourselves obsolete that puts us in the danger we currently face.



Is History Merely Repeating?

We know that the Industrial Revolution caused chaos in the world economy with entire industries being gutted by machines and automation. Given that we have been living with the slow but constant growth of automation ever since shouldn’t we be able to handle it? Well, many researchers fear not. The question is why? What is different now?



What is different?

In the past it was almost exclusively the physical labour force which suffered from technological advances. Now however with the increasing complexity of computers and automated systems a larger cross section of the job market is at risk than ever before.



Who is at risk?

It is no longer just blue collar workers who are facing replacement by machines. The service industry is also facing a looming crisis as is the previously unaffected public sector. With increases in efficiency and adaptability computers now threaten even high end professions such as doctors and engineers.



A Long Time Yet?

Many people feel that these advancements are a long way off still and that they will be well and truly retired by the time this comes to pass. Academics at prestigious universities such as Oxford though have already suggested that as many as 47% of today’s jobs may be gone within the next two decades.



Is There A Solution?

The best solution now is the same solution that eventually rescued us from the Industrial Revolution and that is Education. We need to be educating not only our children but ourselves now to put us in the right position to avoid the unavoidable changes to come.



Back To University?

Universities have already proven largely incapable of educating students for the future to come as they suffer from a tendency to teach much the same subjects in much the same way they always have. What we need is a whole new way to create skilled and valuable members of society.



What Have We Learnt?

What all of this tells us is that we really need to be embracing a new educational paradigm for everyone from teens to retirees. Our personal suggestion for the type of education we need to be looking into is a system similar to this one which provides an awareness of not only how to market yourself, your product or your service online but also gives you a hands on understanding of what makes the internet tick.
