High School Registration Information

COMMON CORE

• Ninth graders entering high school in 2012-2013 year and later complete what is now the Common Core academic requirement to graduate high school.

Block Schedule

• WCPSS high schools utilize a 4 by4 Block schedule (90 minutes) with the exception of Enloe and Broughton High Schools. This allows students to earn 8 credits each school year.

Course Requirements for COMMON CORE

• English 4English I, II, III, & IV

• Mathematics 4Math I, II, III, IV4th Math course to be aligned with

the student’s post high school plan

• Science 3A Physical Science Course, Biology,

Earth/Environmental Science

• Social Studies 4World History American History I,

American History II, Civics and Economics

• Healthful Living 1 Recommended in 9th grade

• JROTC counts as a HL credit• Second Language-Not

required for graduation BUT required to meet minimum application requirements for a UNC.

Requirements Cont:

• JROTC programs are offered at Sanderson, Wake-Forest Rolesville and Broughton high schools.

• Electives courses are for specified schools only. Refer to high school program planning guide (check WCPSS website) for prerequisites and course recommendation.

High School Courses

• Teachers make recommendations for 9th grade core classes based on student’s current class performance, grades and test scores (EOG/EOC’s).

• The names of the high school math classes are subject to change and have not yet been finalized.

High School Courses taken at the Middle School

• Students in grades 6-8 will receive credit for high school mathematics courses (EOC’s) passed in middle school. DRMS currently offers Algebra I.

• Which course(s) must students successfully complete in order to earn one unit of high school credit?

• Students must successfully complete four credits of math which would be different for each student. NC is moving toward requiring Algebra II level math to graduate.

• Can a student repeat a mathematics course for credit at the high school level?

• No. While a student may repeat a course that he/she has passed, he/she may not receive credit for the same course twice.

• If a student earns credit at the middle school level, will he/she have to take additional courses at the high school level as well?

• Yes. Students who have earned one (or more) units of credit in middle school will still have to complete four math credits in high school addition to satisfy graduation requirements.

• Will the grades earned in mathematics courses appear on the high school transcript?

• Yes. The grade will be listed on the transcript under Grade 8 with one unit of credit for each high school math course completed.

• Will the grade earned be included the student’s high school grade point average (GPA)?

• No. Only courses taken during the high school years will be included the student’s grade point average.

Early Graduation

High School students can graduate in 6 semesters or less if the following requirements are met:

• Show satisfactory mastery of high school academic skills and concepts.

• Show a need for early graduation• Meet the graduation course and testing requirement

that were effective the year of entering 9th grade for the first time.

**The Principal and his committee considers requests and deny or approve an early graduation based on the criteria stated above.

• Achieve a combined SAT or ACT sum score that matches your GPA

All Wake County 8th grade students promoted to the 9th grade, are required

to register at a Wake County Public High School regardless of whether you will be applying to a Charter or Private

School or moving out of county.
