The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held between 3

and 14 June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, became known as the Rio or the Earth

Summit and produced the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). This agreement

advocated the establishment of national policies that would identify existing biological

diversity, defined as “the variability among organisms from all sources,”

(www.ukbap.org/uk) which is now more commonly referred to as biodiversity and the

enforcement of these national strategies through biodiversity action plans (BAPS).

Each county produced its own BAP. 192 states and the European Union were parties

to this treaty that had 3 main aims, the conservation of biological diversity, the

sustainable use of components and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising

from genetic resources.

The aim of these BAPS was to identify, then plan to conserve, protect and where possible enhance existing biodiversity. The UK BAP was administered by the UK Biodiversity Partnership. Their document can be viewed at http://tna.europarchive.org/20110303145238/http:/www.ukbap.org.uk/default.aspx. The UK BAP was succeed by the UK Biodiversity Framework in 2010 with the European Union launching the Biodiversity Strategy in May 2011. The plans continue to be devolved to local areas through different organisations including the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=6189. The Sussex Biodiversity Partnership provides information and data for both East and West Sussex and can be viewed at http://www.biodiversitysussex.org/ Local BAPS are usually referred to as LBAPS. They identify Habitat (HAPS) and Species (SAPS) Action Plans.

In 2010 the University of Chichester published its Environmental and Sustainable Development Strategy 2010-2013, in which the commitment to “maintain and improve diversity within the University’s estate” was stated, the first University’s Biodiversity Action Plan (UOC BAP), was published in April 2011 to help to achieve this aim and to contribute to the UK and Sussex LBAP. This fourth, UOC BAP, is published to record the achievements of the past year and to highlight those areas that continue to require actions.

(UoC BAP) In the last year some trees were lost due to disease, landscaping, construction works and environmental conditions including extreme high winds. The Green Campus Group continue to implement their tree planting plans, this will eventually, result in an increase in the number of trees planted across the campuses. The sports pitches are still retained along with the hedgerows that help maintain the soil, reduce problems of soil erosion and provide windbreaks and shelter. The construction of a new running track at the Bishop Otter campus did not impinge on the hedgerows and in March 2012 Black headed seagulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) were seen feeding on the north field’s football pitches. Ponds continue to provide water for birds, invertebrates, herptiles and animals. Open land continues to allow animals to migrate from one area to another. Compost bins are maintained and used. Although the University tries to provide good habitats for all, sometimes the only way of knowing what species are living on the campuses is when bodies are found. This has included a dead fox at the Bognor Regis campus.

A healthy fox on the Bognor Regis Campus Spring 2013 This evidence although sometimes upsetting identifies and informs not only what species is living on the grounds but what help can be provided to ensure that the habitats are of the best quality the University can provide, for example, a dead small rodent photographed on the Bishop Otter campus shows that these mammals have found homes on the grounds.

At the Bognor Regis Campus Nuthatches (Sitta europaea) were spotted nesting in

the trees outside the Dining room. The Climbing Roses in bloom along the wall

fronting Upper Bognor Road on the Bognor Regis Campus provided homes for a

number of species and pleasure to many passers-by. At the Bishop Otter Campus,

crickets could be heard chirping, Seagulls (Larus) and Magpies (Pica pica) around

the Axis Mundi could be seen feeding while rabbit warrens were spotted in the bank

behind the LRC.

Perhaps the most exciting sighting during the year was the Deer (Cervidae) apparently

checking the menus at the Dining Room.

On both campuses the Bluebells (Hyacinthoides) heralded the coming of Spring in

April. This list of species seen on campus grounds has been complied using excerpts

from diaries kept by members of staff across both campuses. These journals and

photographs help to identify species, inform and update the biodiversity plans, and are

an important aspect when producing the UOC BAP.

Crows at Bognor Regis Campus

A Blackbird (Turdus merula) was helped to raise a family of chicks when she decided to build a nest in the Carpenter’s Workshop at the Chichester campus. The birds were carefully shielded and tended to by all members of the staff who used the building. The Caretakers at the Bognor Regis campus not only feed the ducks (Anas) with parts of their lunches but sited near the Lodge have built a small pond using reclaimed wood and a piece of canvas for the Ducks to refresh themselves. Eco friendly systems continue to be introduced into the University. The Equipment

Loans Department introduced a new paperless system for bookings and enquiries.

Payslips are now delivered to members of staff electronically and the new car sharing

scheme was launched in September 2012. The University successfully applied for

funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to fund

energy saving initiatives including the installation of energy efficient LED lighting and

controls.

In the wider community the University participated in many schemes including the

recycle sculpture competition with Fine Art Student, Samuel Lloyd, creating “Existence

is but a moment” using discarded, plastic video cases

The University took part in the Woodlands Trust’s 2012 aim for 6 million trees to be planted across the nation to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Two Oaks, purchased by the Green Campus Group were planted at the Bishop Otter campus on 31 May 2012. Oak trees will be planted at the Bognor Regis campus when construction work has ceased. These trees will provide species rich habitats confirming the University’s commitment to biodiversity enhancement.

The Vice Chancellor, Clive Behagg and the Secretary to the University’s Governors Isabel Cherrett, plant trees to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, May 2012

The House Martins (Delichon urbica), returned to their nests on University House in May 2012 and again in 2013, so much so that the Estate Management Department have delayed construction works until the birds have flown. The London Plane tree that once stood at the entrance to the Bognor Regis campus will be replaced by the Estate Management Department in due course.

The University of Chichester’s Green Campus Group continues to monitor, advise,

suggest and take practical steps to help to contribute to the University’s ecosystem.

The primary duty of the Green Campus Group is to ensure that environmental and

sustainable development issues remain prominent in all University activities, thus

reducing the University’s impact. The Group considers conservation in terms of global

as well as a local scale. In the past year the group has considered inter alia, ponds,

bird boxes, bat boxes, bee keeping, allotments, Fairtrade, the travel plan, solar energy,

design of new buildings on campus and ethical and political questions regarding the

University’s procurement policy. This process and policy now includes these topics

when considering new contracts, for example, at the tendering stage for the new

catering contract some environmental aspects were discussed including Fair Trade

status and the International Standards Organization ISO 14401, these systems will be

implemented by the University’s new catering provider, Elior.

The Green Campus Group’s actions have included planting more trees in the orchard at the Bishop Otter Campus, the organisation of Spring Fairs to help raise funds for the Group’s purchase of new trees, plants and equipment. The 2012 Spring Fair theme was Rio20, to celebrate the twentieth anniversary from the original United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, ‘the Earth Summit’ held in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Green Campus Group incorporated corporate social responsibility within the fairs and invited several different associations to attend including the Fire Brigade, Bee Keepers, St Wilfrid’s Hospice, cycling organisations and a local camera club. The Green Campus Group took part in the University’s Well Being week, with an exhibition and offering tree walks.

The Green Campus Group supports the University’s involvement in the Green Impact scheme, the re-accreditation of BS 8555, the Fairtrade Fortnight, The Carbon Management Plan, permanent bee hives sited on both campuses together with the University’s Well Being Week and the Sensory Garden project for the Bognor Regis Campus.

(UoC BAP) The Green Campus Group will continue to engage with students, a member of the group will attend the Fresher’s Fair. The Group will support the new role of Environmental Officer on the Student Union Senate. Encouraged by the Green Campus Group and the Environment and Sustainable Development Co-Ordinator, Kate Cathie, the Student Union has made great strides last year, including winning green awards. The University achieved a 1st Class Degree in the People and Planet award ranking 28 in the United Kingdom.

The Green Campus Group is aware of the Student aim of providing free food on campus and sensory gardens, the group will fully support these initiatives.

Spring Fair 2013 Bognor Regis Campus

The allotments on the Bognor Regis Campus are now well established with some

traditional allotment flowers appearing. Old concrete litter bins that were scattered

across the Bognor Regis campus were moved to this area and are now being used for

food production around the allotment site. The herbs grown in these containers will not

only be used as food, they will provide a rich nectar source for bees and other insects.

The new allotments on the Bishop Otter Campus have proved popular with students

applying for allotments.

The Green Campus Group put forward suggestions at the construction stage of the

new Sports Dome at the Chichester campus the result of which water butts were

included in the design. This water will be used on the nearby, newly, established

allotments. The Sports Dome has already become a favourite home for the local

Seagulls (Larus). The allotments at the Bognor Regis campus have been collecting

rainwater from nearby buildings for the last year with pipes running directly from the

roof gutters to the water butts.

The Green Campus Group will continue, as funds permit, to purchase bird and bat boxes, bird feeders, bird baths, water butts and gardening equipment for the allotments.

Although the bird box that included the camera initially appealed only to insects as a home, many viewers across the campus enjoyed watching the activities of the flying creatures, the long winter seemed to kill them off, however, birds have now moved in. The Tits (Paridae) seem to be enjoying their new home. The re-establishing of the video link will once again allow many across campus to view the comings and goings. Bird boxes will continue to be made on campus and placed in appropriate places as suitable homes for a number of species.
