Why a New & Improved Dress Code?All members of the Mt Abe school community are expected to

dress in a way that promotes a healthy learning environment and that shows respect for themselves and others in the

school. The Mt Abe expectations for appropriate attire ("dress code") have been developed in accordance with our school's

mission statement:

"to create and maintain a respectful environment..." and"...all participate as responsible citizens".

That would mean that clothing choices worn in the school

environment will be similar to what would be appropriate and responsible in a business/workplace setting and demonstrate

respect for ourselves and everyone else at school.

• Be sure to use this powerpoint in “slide show” mode.

• A clothing example will be displayed. You be the judge. Does it qualify as appropriate for school (using the dress code) or not?

• When you hit the forward arrow, check marks or X’s will indicate whether you’ve got it right (or not)

Does this meet the dress for success at Mt Abe test?

Perfectly fabulous for the school environment.


Tops with both straps at least 2 fingers wide—no spaghetti straps or halter

tops.


Inappropriate message—It’s MEAN and disrespectful

to others.


Midriffs must be covered, including when your hands are raised above your head



(Sheer top with a cami underneath is

acceptable)


Undergarments must be completely

covered.

Shirts must be worn in school.


Length is Appropriate (but just barely)—must be at least as long as your fist when your arms hang

straight down at your sides.


This is acceptable for

school

(and for an outdoor work environment!)


Inappropriate message—implies violence.


Inappropriate length—must be at least as long as your fist when your arms hang

straight down at your sides.


Skirt does not pass the length test—must be at

least as long as the bottom of your fist when your arms hang straight down at your

sides.

Form-fitting fabrics are not appropriate for school.


Tops/sweaters/dresses that are cut no lower

than a line drawn horizontally from one

armpit to the other


Leggings can be worn at school.

Form-fitting (body-contour or body-con) fabrics are not appropriate

for school.


Straps are a hair too skinny—does not pass the “2-

fingers wide” test.

Shorts do not pass the length test—as long as your fist when arms are hanging

at the side.


Perfect for the school environment.


Spaghetti straps and halter tops are

prohibited.Top does not pass the “line from armpit to

armpit test”


Top does not meet the “line from armpit to

armpit” test.

Sheer or transparent fabric is not appropriate

for school.Adding a cami to this dress would make it

work.


“Off the shoulder” does not pass the “2 straps”

test.



(Probably needs a cami—might be just a hair too low cut.)


Hoodie up with sunglasses sends a “not interested”

message and is inappropriate for school.


Top does not pass the “line from armpit to

armpit” test.

Shorts probably do not pass the length test— “as

long as the bottom of your fist when arm is

hanging straight at your sides”.


Clothing with writing on the bum is inappropriate for

school.


Perfect for the school environment!


T-shirts advertising alcohol or drugs are

inappropriate for school.


Shorts do not pass the length test— “to bottom of your fist

when hanging straight at your side”.

This top passes the “line from armpit to armpit” test.


Spaghetti straps are prohibited. This top does not meet the “line

from armpit to armpit” test.The shorts are fabulous, though!

Transparent fabric without a cami is not appropriate for

school.


The Confederate flag carries a racist message and is

inappropriate for school.


Open arm holes must be paired with a cami.

A bra with this top would not be enough.


Perfectly fabulous for school!


So, what happens if I show to school in

something inappropriate?

• Teachers and/or Staff will ask you to (privately & discreetly) to check in with the School Climate Team (Nancy, Kira or Todd) in the main office.

• Then…..

So, what happens if I show to school in something inappropriate?

• A member of the SCT will decide if a students clothing meets the Mount Abe dress code.– If he/she decides the clothing meets our dress

code, you go back to class. (no behavior write up!)– If he/she decides the clothing does not meet our

dress code, the he/she will work with the student to decide next steps (and will “write it up”).

• Here are some possible options:



• OPTION #1: Call home to have appropriate clothing delivered to you

Hi Mom, Don’t be mad… I need a big favor…..


• OPTION #2: If you happen to have other, appropriate clothes with you, you can change into them.

I think my basketball

shorts are in my gym bag.


• OPTION # 3: We have clean, plain t-shirts and plain sweatpants for you if you need to borrow appropriate clothing.

One white t-shirt please. I didn’t realize my shirt

was so form fitting. It’ll never

happen again.


• Of course, a behavior write-up will be filed and a copy will be sent home.

WHAT?!?!Noooooooo!!!
