    Capitaldredgingandportextensionworksareofgreateconomicsignificanceas

    aresultoftheexpansionofworldtradewhichrequiresand/orforcesallportsto

    increasetheircapacity.Eitherexistingharbourbasinsandaccesschannelsare

    deepenedorcompletelynewharboursarecreatedtoreceivelargercommercial

    vessels.Mostnewharboursaredevelopedinordertomeettheeverincreasing

    demandforrawmaterialsandtheexpandingworldtrade.Forprimaryrawmaterials

    suchascoal,ironoreandotherbasicmetalsandfortheoilandgastradenew

    specialisedharboursarenowbuiltallovertheworld.

    InAustralia,JanDeNulGroupisexpandingwhatisnowalreadythecountrys

    largestironoreexportingharbourinPortHedland.Theexportcapacityhasto

    bedoubledin2yearstimerequiringahugedeepeningoftheexistingharbour

    area.

    InNewCaledoniatheconstructionwasstartedofacompletelynewharbour

    forspecificallyoneproduct,namelynickel.Thisharbourwillaccomodate8%

    oftheworldsdemandfornickel.

    InBelgium,theWesternScheldtwasdeepenedtoimprovetheaccesstothe

    PortofAntwerpfortheeverincreasingssizeofcontainerships.

    MaintenanceDredgingconsistsoftheremovalofsedimentationtomaintain

    therequireddepthofwaterways,channelsandports.

    Maintenancedredgingworksarethemosttraditionaldredgingprojectsand

    becauseofthatarenodoubtalsotheleastconspicuousbranchofJanDeNuls

    dredgingactivities.However,thistypeofworksdideventuallyleadtothedevelop-

    mentofthetrailingsuctionhopperdredgerandisofvitalimportancetoharbours.

    NotonlyinBelgium,butalsoworldwide,large-scalemaintenancecontractsareput

    outtotender.JanDeNulGrouphasaverydiversefleetofmoderntrailingsuction

    hopperdredgers,enablingittoexecutemaintenancedredgingprojectsevenin

    fairlyshallowwaters.Thelargestprojectsofarundertakenisundoubtedlythe

    maintenanceoftheRoParaninArgentina,whereJanDeNulGroupis

    maintainingtheriveroveralengthof800km.

    Theongoing18-yearcapitalandmaintenancedredgingcontractfortheRo

    ParanandRodelaPlatainArgentina,increasesthenavigabilityoftheriver

    soastoprovideimprovedcommunicationsandtradeopportunitiesfor

    Argentinasinlandriverconurbations.Thisprojectextendsoverapproximately

    800kilometresfromtheentranceofthePortofSantaFeontheRoParanup

    toPuntaIndio,km240ontheRiodelaPlata.

    InthePortofHamburg,maintenancedredgingworkshastobeexecutedat

    regularintervalsassedimentationfromtheriverElbewouldotherwisesiltup

    theport.PartofthedredgedmaterialisdumpedintheNorthSeaasthe

    storagecapacityfordredgedspoilintheportofHamburgislimited.Such

    maintenanceworksareexecutedusinglargetrailingsuctionhopperdredgers.

    ToensuregoodaccesstothePortofAntwerp,twotothreetrailingsuction

    hopperdredgersarecontinuouslydredgingtheScheldt.Thecurrentcontract

    withaconcessionperiodof7yearsalsoprovidesforthedeepeningofthe

    WesternScheldtandtheSeaScheldt.TheScheldtisanextremelybusyriver,

    whichtogetherwiththealternatingcurrentsmakesthisdredgingprojectan

    extremelychallengingone.Everyyear,about10millionmofsandandsludge

    isdredgedandre-dumpedinplaceswheretheriveriseroding.Occasionally,

    dredgespoilisalsoreclaimedonshore.

    AlsointheNorthSeanavigationchannelsaremaintainedattheirproperdepth

    byJanDeNulGroup.Thesedredgingworksmaintainthedepthofboththe

    navigationchannelinopenseatotheScheldtandthattotheportsofZee-

    bruggeandOstend.AlsodredgingintheZeebruggeandOstendportsis

    carriedout.Thedredgespoilmainlyconsistsofsludgeandisdumpedinto

    dumpingsitesintheNorthSea.

    LandReclamationinvolvesthecreationoflandoverwaterbyutilisingsand

    dredgedfromtheseaforcoastalprotectionand/ortocreateareasforresi-

    dential,recreationalorindustrialpurposes.Asubcategoryoflandreclamation

    isbeachreplenishment,wheresandisplacedonexistingbeachestoprevent

    orfighterosion.

    LandreclamationprojectsarenodoubtJanDeNulsmoststrikingactivity.Located

    atthecoastofDubai,forinstance,hugeamountsofsandhavebeenreclaimed

    since2002fortheconstructionofPalmIslandII(JebelAli)andtheWaterfront

    Project.TorealisethePalmJebelAliIslandandWaterfrontprojects,inallabout

    500millionm3ofsandhasbeenreclaimed.Thisequatestoarowoftrucksencircling

    theearthabout22times.ElsewhereintheworldJanDeNulGrouphasexecuted

    landreclamationprojects,forexampleinRasLaffan(Qatar),SoyoLNG(Angola),

    PulauUbinandPulauTekong(Singapore),Sfax(Tunisia),SaadiyatIsland(AbuDhabi)

    andManifa(SaudiArabia).

    PalmJebelAliIslandandtheWaterfrontProjectinDubai.PalmJebelAliIsland

    isanislandintheformofapalmtreewithadiameterof4kmprotectedbya

    17kmlongbreakwater.FortheWaterfrontProject7islandsarereclaimed

    aroundPalmJebelAli.Inanareaof2,300hectaremorethan300millionmof

    sandwillhavebeenreclaimed.Thisproject,mainlyexecutedbytrailersuction

    hopperdredgers,willtakeapproximatelysixyearstocomplete.Thefirstisland

    willtake18monthstoconstruct.

    Theaptlynameddredgingcontractofthe20thcentury,thereclamationworks

    forthenewinternationalairportofChekLapKokinHongKong.JanDeNul

    Group,asamemberofaninternationalConsortiumofdredgingandcivil

    engineeringconstructioncompanies,successfullyexecutedandmanagedthis

    projectwithintheagreedtimelimits.ThisProject(dredgingandreclaimingof

    237millionm)wasatthetimethebiggestreclamationprojecteverexecuted.

    Mostoftheworldslargestdredgingvesselsweredeployedonit.

    AnimportantbeachreplenishmentreferenceistheprojectinCancn,Mexico,

    wherebeacheshadbeenfullyerodedbecauseofthedamagecausedbythe

    tropicalstormWilma.ForthecoastalareafeaturingCancnshotels,about

    2.8millionmofsandwasreclaimedforrestoringthebeach.

    RockRevetmentisappliedtoprotectshoresagainsttidalandwaveactions.

    Inlandreclamationprojects,firstabreakwaterisformedwiththesupplied

    rocksmarkingoutthecircumferenceoftheisland.Subsequently,theisland

    itselfisreclaimedwithsandusingvarioustechniques.Withinthescopeof

    portinfrastructureworksitconcernsmainlytheconstructionofbreakwaters

    orshoreprotection.

    JanDeNulGroupfirstengagedinthisactivityinSingapore(constructionofthe

    islandsPulauUbinandPulauTekong)andsubsequentlyperfecteditsskillsinDubai

    (PalmJebelAliIslandandJebelAliNewContainerTerminal).Thisactivityhas

    becomeanindispensablelinkinmanylarge-scaleprojects.Rockrevetmentis

    alsobeingappliedinDubai(WaterfrontandNewIslandDevelopment),Abu

    Dhabi(Saadiyat)andSaudiArabia(Manifa).Thesignificanceofthisactivityisalso

    highlightedbytheinvestmentindryequipmentandsplithopperbargesoverthe

    lastfewyears.

    PalmJebelAliIslandandtheWaterfrontProjectinDubai.The17branchesof

    PalmJebelAliareeach2.5kilometreslongandareprotectedagainsttherough

    seabyabreakwaterof17kmlongand350metreswide.Forthe7islandsofthe

    WaterfrontProject12millionmofrockwillberequiredtoprotectthecoastline

    againsterosion.Forbothprojectsatotalof40milliontonnesofrockare

    needed.Thisquantityrepresents2milliontruckloads.

    InSingapore,atotalareaof1,400hectarewillbecreatedusingsandand

    dumpedclayforexpandingtheislandofTekonginordertomeetthegrowing

    demandforbuildingland.Thenewlyformedlandwillincreasethecoastlineby

    some13.3kilometres,which,incomparison,isaboutonefifthoftheBelgian

    coast.Toprotectthesenewshores,1.6milliontonnesofrockweredumped

    overasurfaceof100hectare,equivalentto125footballpitches.Thisshore

    protectionwasappliedinwaterdepthsofupto25m.

    theinstallationofcofferdams,rockdumpingandseabedlevellingforthe

    installationofpipelines,loweringofoilandgaspipelinesinseabedtrenches,

    backfillingofpipelineswithstoneandrock,stabilisingofoilrigsthroughrock

    dumpingandballastsandtheexcavationofso-namedGloryHoles.

    Thespecificrequirementsoftheoffshoreindustryrequirespecialisedequipment

    andJanDeNulGrouphas,butnotlimitedto,trailingsuctionhopperdredgers

    equippedwithdeepdredgingfacilitiesforwaterdepthsofupto155m,rock

    cuttersuctiondredgers,dynamicallypositioned(side)stone-dumpingvesselsand

    backhoedredgersinitsfleet,forsuchwork.

    TheconstructionoftheManifaFieldCausewayandIslandsinSaudiArabia.

    This1billiondollarcontractisoneofthelargestdredgingcontractsawarded

    inrecentyears.Theprojectincludesthedesignandconstructionofa41km

    longmaincausewayinopenseaandassociatedsecondarycausewaysthat

    willprovidevehicleandserviceaccessto25drilling/productionislandsand

    2waterinjectionislands.Theprojectalsocoversthedesignandconstruction

    ofbridges,berths,roll-on/roll-offfacilitiesandtheremovalofexistingunder-

    waterpipelines.Inall,morethan10milliontonnesofrockisexcavatedfrom

    thedeserttoprotectthereclaimedislandsagainststormsprotectionwhich

    willlastfor100years.JanDeNulisresponsibleforboththedesignandthe

    construction(EPC)ofthisproject.

    JanDeNulGroupalsobroughtanextremelycomplexdredgingprojectto

    asuccessfulclose:theso-namedGloryHolesinCanada.Theseworkswere

    executedintheAtlanticOcean,about350kmeastofNewfoundland,ata

    dredgingdepthofover130minstiffclaywithboulders.Theprojectspurpose

    wastoprotecttheunderwaterdrillinginstallationsagainstthescouringof

    icebergsovertheseabed.

    OneofJanDeNulGroupsmorestrikingoffshoreprojectsweretheactivities

    aroundthedistantislandofSakhalinadjacenttotheEast-Siberiancoast,in

    veryheavyseaconditions.Atlocationsabout1000kmawayfromtheinhabited

    worldtrenchesweredredgedintheseabedandbackfilledtoprotectpipelines

    againstthescouringoficefloesovertheseabed.Forthelandfallsattheshore

    cofferdamswerebuiltattemperaturesdownto30belowzeroinhard-frozen

    soil.Attheendoftheworkingseason,rockrevetmentwasconstructedaround

    theoilrigsbeforetheseawasfrozenover.

    DubaiandtheRasLaffanPortExpansionProjectinQatar.

    ThankstoitsmultidisciplinaryapproachJanDeNulisabletocombineallofitsactivitiesfor

    thiskindoflarge-scaleproject,whichthecompanycandelivertothecustomerwithinthe

    presetandrequiredtimeframes.

    TheextensionoftheexistingLNG-portatRasLaffaninQatar.This2billiondollar

    contractentailsthedredgingof20millionmoflimestone,thereclamationof

    25millionmofsand,thedeliveryanddumpingof18milliontonnesofrockand

    theproductionandinstallationof1millionmofconcreteblocksfortheconstruction

    ofbreakwaterstoprotectthenewharbour.Oncompletion,RasLaffanwillbecome

    theworldsbiggestLNG-port.

    ThedevelopmentoftheJebelAliContainerTerminalinDubai.ThisProjectconsistsof

    thedeepeningoftheportbasin(dredgingof23millionmofmaterial),thedredging

    ofatrenchfortheconstructionofafuturequaywall,theconstructionofabreakwater

    usingquarrystonesandshoreprotectionoveradistanceof9km(totalamountof

    rock:2.5millionm),8millionmofearthmovingandtheconstructionofa1.7kmlong

    dynamicbreakwaterforthesafemooringofvessels.

    Earlyin1995,anexistingjointventurebetweenfourleadingBelgianmarinecontractors,

    includingJanDeNulNVandT.V.Bergingswerken(TVB),wasrestructuredasScaldis

    Salvage&MarineContractorsNV

    Scaldisprovidessalvage,wreckremovalandmarinecontractingservicesthroughout

    NorthwestEuropeandelsewhereintheworld.

    TheScaldisfleetincludestheocean-goingheavyliftcatamaranRambizwithalifting

    capacityof4,000tonnesandtheNorma,afloatingshearlegswithaliftingcapacityof

    440tonnes.

    TheCompanyshistoryincludesamongstotherstheremovaloftheMontLouis,lostoff

    Ostendin1984,andthere-floatingoftheferryHeraldofFreeEnterprise,whichcapsized

    offZeebruggein1987.Scaldishasalsobeeninvolvedwithmajorheavyliftandmarine

    contractingworks,includingthenewTagusBridgeVascodaGamainPortugal,which

    wasopenedforEXPO98.

    Scaldisbringsitstechnicalexpertisetoeachtaskundertaken,thusensuringasafe

    workingenvironmentandtheprotectionofthemarineenvironmentatalltimes.

    Inordertobeabletochartitsdredgingprojectsandlargeinfrastructureworksin

    anaccuratemannerandtofollowthemuppromptlyandefficiently,JanDeNul

    Grouphassetupitsownsurveydivision,whichincludethefollowingtasks:

    Theaccurateindicationofthelocationandlevel(height/depth)ofthe

    workareabasedontopographicalandhydrographicalmeasuringmethods

    (before,duringandaftertheworks);

    Presentationofthemeasuringresultsandcalculationofdredgedquantities;

    Settingupandmaintainingpositioningandvisualisationsystemsondredging

    vesselssothattheoperatorcanworkverypreciselyusingadigitaltopo-

    graphicalmodelorsoilprofile.

    ThesurveydivisionofJanDeNulconsistsofasizableteamofexpertsand

    engineersdeployedonvariousprojectsworldwide.Inordertomeettheever

    stricterdemandsofcustomers,thedivisionhasstate-of-theart,high-tech

    canbedumpedthroughitsbottomdoors

    orbereclaimedusingtherainbowing

    technique.Theon-sitepumpingofthe

    sandusingafloatingpipelineisanother

    frequentlyusedunloadingtechnique.

    Cuttersuctiondredgersareequipped

    witharotatingcutterheadcuttinghard

    soilintofragments.Thecutsoilisthen

    suckedinbydredgepumps.Cuttersuction

    dredgersaremostlystationarysuction

    dredgersthatcutthesoilaccordingtoa

    pre-setprofile.Thematerialisthenpum-

    pedashoreusingpumpsandafloating

    pipelineorloadedintoasplithopperbarge

    mooredalongside,whichinturncanthen

    dumpthedredgespoilatthesetlocation.

    Backhoedredgersareaverycommon

    typeofdredgingmachinewhichisusually

    notself-propelled.Themostimportantpart

    ofthemachineisthehydraulicexcavator

    dredgingfromapontoon.TheBackacter

    istheworldslargestdredgingexcavator

    withatotallynew,stronglyimproved

    excavationconcept.
