TRANSCRIPT
From the early days
of “Shrek,” “Shrek 2”
and “Madagascar” to
upcoming films such
as “How to Train
Your Dragon,” cloud
computing and early
variants of it have
been crucial to pro-
viding DreamWorks
with the compute
resources required
to create its award-
winning animations.
Don’t miss the visionary keynote address
by Derek Chan, Head of Digital Operations
for DreamWorks Animation, as he shares
key insights into the animation studio’s use
of cloud computing.
DreamWorks and Red Hat have part-
nered for many years in the Linux commu-
nity to define and drive Linux to achieve
high-grade commercial reliability and qual-
ity that’s unmatched in the industry. The
collaboration has resulted in solutions
and technologies that are helping to not
only drive the animation industry, but the
next wave of the computing industry too.
DreamWorks continues to be a shining
example of innovation among its peers
in the animation industry, no more evi-
dent than now with its utilization of cloud
computing.
Chan joined DreamWorks in 1996 and in

dent and president,
Products and Tech-
nologies. The pace of
innovation continues
to increase rapidly
as we move further
into the 21st century.
However, many CIOs
are being asked to
solve 21st century IT
problems with 20th
century technol-
ogy. Whitehurst will
speak to the power
of participation and
how Red Hat and
open source bridge
the gap to provide a
better architecture
for today’s IT chal-
lenges.
Jim Whitehurst
was named Presi-
dent and Chief Ex-
ecutive Officer of
Red Hat in Decem-
ber 2007.
Whitehurst joined
Delta Air Lines in
2002, serving in
various roles, most recently as Chief Op-
erating Officer, responsible for operations,
sales and customer service, network and
revenue management, marketing and
corporate strategy. Prior to joining Delta,
Whitehurst served as Vice President and
Director of The Boston Consulting Group
(BCG) and held various leadership roles in
their Chicago, Hong Kong, Shanghai and
Atlanta offices.
A native of Columbus, Ga., Whitehurst
graduated from Rice University in Houston,
Texas, with a bachelor’s degree in computer
science and economics. He also attended
Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen,
Germany, holds a general course degree
from the London School of Economics and
an MBA from Harvard Business School.
As emcee of the Red Hat Summit, Paul

Another sign that open source middleware
is moving into strategic, mission-critical de-
ployments is the participation of GEICO in
this year’s JBoss World keynote presenta-
tion. GEICO Group Vice President and Chief
Information Officer, Jess Reed, will present
to JBoss World attendees on Wednesday,
September 2 at 1 p.m. in the International
Ballroom. Reed will highlight GEICO’s de-
ployment of Red Hat’s JBoss Enterprise
Middleware and their use of open source
middleware software for mission-critical
platforms. GEICO (Government Employees
Insurance Company) — as part of Berkshire
Hathaway — is the third-largest private pas-
senger auto insurer in the United States.
GEICO provides auto insurance coverage
for 9 million policyholders and insures
more than 15 million vehicles.
Reed and his GEICO colleagues have
made strides to improve performance, po-
sition the company for additional growth
and implemented ways to improve the effi-
ciency of IT systems and applications. Most
recently Reed’s team deployed Red Hat’s
JBoss Enterprise Application Platform,
where GEICO was able to reduce the total
cost of ownership over proprietary Java

CME Group is the world’s largest and most
diverse derivatives exchange. Building
on the heritage of the Chicago Mercan-
tile Exchange, Chicago Board of Trade,
and New York Mercantile Exchange,
CME Group serves the risk management
needs of customers around the globe. The
group processes millions of transactions
per day, and in 2008, its volume totaled 3.3
billion contracts worth $1.2 quadrillion in
notional value.
CME Group previously relied on a pro-
prietary UNIX operating platform for its IT
systems, but due to increasing costs, they
began looking for affordable, high-perfor-
mance alternatives in order to reduce costs
and increase performance, reliability, scal-
ability, and agility of the systems on which
its critical trading platforms handle billions
of derivatives trades per year, worth more
than a quadrillion in notional value.
CME Group decided to migrate its Sun
Solaris on SPARC servers to Red Hat
Enterprise Linux on x86-based servers,
and achieved reduced latency, expanded
flexibility, delivered a twofold increase in
performance, ease of migration and man-
agement, increased scalability, and reduced
cost by 50%. To assist with the migration
CME Group leveraged hands-on Red Hat
Training courses and a Red Hat Technical
Account Manager (TAM), who offers ad-
ditional, ongoing Red Hat expertise to the
exchange’s IT team.
CME Group today works closely with
Red Hat’s performance teams to demon-
strate workloads and tune systems and col-
laborates with Red Hat for future product
developments. Given the history and part-
nering with Red Hat, CME is considering
extending that partnership to JBoss Enter-
prise Middleware technology.
“Our technology partnership with
Red Hat is key to us staying competitive in
the market. We look to Red Hat for tech-
nology leadership through updates and
support that help us to improve our tuning
so that we can give our customers the best
possible experience,” said Joe Panfil, man-
aging director of Enterprise Technology
Services at CME Group.

At JavaOne we announced our ground-
breaking JBoss Open Choice strategy. This
approach will give our customers a platform
to support developer choice and provide a
consistent foundation to support the wide
variety of Java programming and compo-
nent models, including plain old Java ob-
jects (POJOs), Java EE, Spring Framework,
OSGi, Google Web Toolkit and a variety of
rich internet Application frameworks.
Today we are delivering on that strategy
by announcing the availability of JBoss
Enterprise Application Platform 5.0. This
core middleware component represents
next-generation Java application platforms
and will be integral to Red Hat’s cloud
foundation.
What is unique is that the platform spans
the growing number of operating models,
from traditional on-premise lightweight
Java applications, to newer internal and ex-
ternal cloud-based deployments. Custom-
ers will benefit from easier application de-
velopment, deployment, developer choice,
protection against programming model
changes and an easier transition to newer
application deployment models.
“Not only have we delivered on our
JBoss Open Choice strategy by releasing
JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 5.0,
but we are driving the future of Java appli-
cation platforms from traditional to cloud-
based environments,” said Craig Muzilla,
vice president, middleware business unit,
Red Hat. “Ultimately, we are giving custom-
ers the flexibility to choose the right pro-
gramming and deployment models to stay
ahead of their competition.”
“...the platform spans the growing number of operating models, from traditional on-premise lightweight Java applications, to newer cloud-based
deployments.”
Also available in conjunction with the
release of JBoss Enterprise Application
Platform 5.0 is the latest release of JBoss’
comprehensive management support,
JBoss Operations Network (ON) 2.3. JBoss
ON provides the ability to configure ap-
plication clusters in traditional and cloud-
based deployments as well as availability
and performance management across a
variety of operating environments.

You’ve perfected your slides. You’ve re-
hearsed 728,391 times. You’re ready to
present at this year’s Red Hat Summit and
JBoss World. Here are a few tips to remem-
ber before walking into your session room:
1. REHEARSE ONE LAST TImE. The best
presentation preparation is rehearsal. Try
to rehearse in front of a peer if possible.
If not, try your cab driver, a Hilton Chicago
bartender, a mirror.
2. REmEmbER THAT YOuR AuDIENcE
mAY NOT bE 100 pERcENT TEcHNIcAL
and is likely to include business profession-
als. Make sure to provide sufficient back-
ground information and elaborate on tech-
nical concepts so everyone is in the know.
3. LOOk gOOD. Don’t let your dress dis-
tract the message.
4. SLOw DOwN YOuR DELIvERY. Think
you’re talking too slow? Then you’re talking
at just the right pace.
5. gET TO kNOw YOuR AuDIENcE. Take
advantage of Red Hat Summit and JBoss
World networking opportunities and meet
the people who are attending your ses-
sion. And if possible, get to your session
early so you can speak with your session
attendees.
6. cONNEcT TO YOuR AuDIENcE. Try
to make eye contact with everyone in the
room. And if you can’t, make sure you scan
all sides of the room. Many presenters fo-
cus on one section, leaving more than half
of the audience out.
7. cREATE A DIALOguE wITH YOuR
AUDIENCE. Ask them questions, ask for
their opinions. One hour of being “talked
at” can feel like five hours.
8. bE AwARE OF YOuR gESTuRES.
Plan some. Control others.
9. SHOw YOuR ENTHuSIASm AND

look bored, your audience will be too.

Red Hat was an-
nounced as a found-
ing member of Open
Source for America
(OSA) in July. Since
OSA’s launch, more
than 1,000 companies, academic institu-
tions, open source communities, think tanks
and related groups and individuals have
joined Red Hat in promoting open source in
government through OSA. The coalition’s
mission is to serve as a centralized advo-
cate and to encourage broader U.S. federal
government support of and participation in
free and open source software.
There have been initiatives at the federal
level this year around openness, transpar-
ency and collaboration, starting with Presi-
dent Obama signing his transparency mem-
orandum just a few days after taking office.
This presented the perfect opportunity for
open source advocates to join together and
form OSA to help new technology leaders
in the government sector embrace open
source software.
“We believe that the U.S. federal gov-
ernment can and should become more
transparent, participatory, secure and ef-
ficient,” said Tom Rabon, vice president of
Corporate Affairs at Red Hat and a mem-
ber of the OSA steering committee. “And
we believe the government can do that by
leveraging the advantages of open source
software and the culture embodied in open
source communities.”
Red Hat has maintained a strong pres-
ence in Washington for many years and
has helped numerous government agen-
cies carve out IT costs, improve security
and increase efficiency from the U.S. Navy,
Army and Air Force to the Federal Aviation
Administration, Census Bureau and U.S.
Patent and Trademark Office.
OSA participation is open to any person
or entity signing OSA’s mission pledge. To
take the pledge, visit www.opensource-
foramerica.org. Follow OSA on Twitter at

CEOs and 88 partner participants can’t be
wrong! This year we are focusing more at-
tention than ever on our partner commu-
nity, and it shows in the strong attendance
at this year’s Red Hat Summit and JBoss
World. Our partners play a critical role in
the success of Red Hat, and we are taking
extra steps to recognize and thank them.
One way we are doing this is by launch-
ing the Red Hat Catalyst Program. This pro-
gram is aimed at leveraging all of Red Hat’s
routes to market through a collaborative
and innovative marketing program that
plans to include an interactive web portal
to facilitate the formation of a community
around Red Hat’s entire partner ecosystem.
Simply put—we are linking Red Hat’s fast-
growing community of partners, resellers,
system integrators, Independent Software
Vendors (ISVs) and hardware vendors in
order to foster collaboration around open
source-based solutions. The Catalyst Pro-
gram will formalize this process, encour-
aging and reinforcing the entire partner
ecosystem.
“Industry reports estimate the total eco-
system spend around open source to be
more than $30 billion and growing. This
includes hardware, software and services,”
said Roger Egan, vice president, North
American Channel Sales, Red Hat. “There is
no doubt that partners with an open source
business practice are positioning them-
selves to take advantage of this market op-
portunity. The Catalyst program is designed
to help our entire ecosystem leverage this
business opportunity and deliver greater
value to customers through solutions built
on Red Hat technologies.”
For more information about our part-
ners and ISVs, visit one of our participating
sponsors in the Catalyst Pavilion at the Red
Hat Summit and JBoss World. For more

Red Hat certifications have been touted
as among the best in the IT industry.
Our commitment to performance-based
testing has led to a high-quality program
earning recognition and awards. In fact, IDC
recently took notice of Red Hat’s strength
in training and certification and ranked
Red Hat as the leader in a competitive anal-
ysis that measured vendor product, go-to-
market and business execution in the short
term in addition to alignment of vendor
strategies with customer requirements in a
three- to five-year timeframe.
Yesterday we announced the latest addi-
tion to our impressive certification lineup—
JBoss Certified Application Administrator
(JBCAA). Red Hat is responding to inter-
est in its open source middleware solu-
tions. Red Hat customers are looking to
the company to help them maximize their
JBoss Enterprise Middleware deployments
and optimize their strategic investments.
JBCAA can help Red Hat customers and
partners get the most from Red Hat de-
ployments.
With the launch of JBCAA, this industry-
acclaimed certification program spans
platform and middleware technologies.
JBCAA is the only performance-based
certification in its category, continuing on
Red Hat’s tradition of benchmarking the
skills of IT professionals through hands-on
skills assessments. This approach to test-
ing is markedly different from the multiple-
choice testing prevalent among many IT
certification programs. The new certifica-
tion extends that tradition. Those earning
JBCAA accreditation will have demonstrat-
ed the skills and knowledge needed to in-
stall, configure, monitor and manage JBoss
Enterprise Application Platform and deploy
applications to it.
“JBCAA is the only performance-based certification in its
category, continuing on Red Hat’s tradition of benchmarking the
skills of IT professionals through hands-on skills
assessments.”
The JBCAA certification is expected
to be globally available in October 2009.
Other certifications in Red Hat’s portfolio
include Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE),
Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT), Red
Hat Certificates of Expertise, Red Hat Cer-
tified Datacenter Specialist (RHCDS), Red
Hat Certified Security Specialist (RHCSS)
and Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA).

Open source soft-
ware development
has been one of the
greatest sources of
innovation in the
technology industry.
Red Hat has a long
track record of sup-
porting FOSS and
has worked hard to
address the short-
comings of the pat-
ent system. Red
Hat has consistently
maintained that software patents impede
innovation and inhibit open source devel-
opment and distribution. All too often, the
use of patents in the software industry is
to maintain marketshare, even where the
marketshare has been obtained by anti-
competitive means.
Although patent law is intended to fos-
ter innovation, many believe it performs
this function poorly in the software area.
Wherever one stands in this debate, a basic
understanding of the existing patent sys-
tem is essential for anyone who is involved
with open source software. A number of
sessions will address issues relevant to in-
tellectual property and patent reform.
Check out Thursday’s session “The El-
ephant in the Room: Free Software and
Microsoft” which will touch on Microsoft’s
inconsistent course on patents and FOSS.
Thursday will also feature the session “Re-
cent Developments in the Law of Software
Patents” to help developers and business
leaders understand the baseline issues of
software patenting. Topics will include the
changing landscape for software patents,
the Bilski case now pending before the Su-
preme Court, open source community de-
fense measures, reform efforts and recent
case law developments.
On Friday, the session “The Challenge of
Patent Trolls — How to Contribute Prior Art”
will detail the background needed to assist
in the process of challenging patents. This
includes how to read a patent and how to
identify prior art useful in challenging a
particular patent’s validity. This session
will also discuss the Linux Defender pro-
gram, which has invited the public to put
this information to use by providing a fo-
rum in which people can submit prior art
and discuss its relevance to challenging the
validity of patents of interest to the open
source community.

Students at Carnegie
Mellon University no-
ticed a few changes
in the School of Com-
puter Science as they
kicked off the fall
semester this past
Monday. The university unveiled a new,
state-of-the-art, open source computer
laboratory courtesy of Red Hat and the
Fedora Project. The lab includes 60 work-
stations installed with Fedora and Red Hat
Enterprise Linux.
“...we wanted to ensure that open source
methodologies had a central presence in
our curriculum.”
“We couldn’t be happier about our part-
nership with Red Hat, and we are thankful
for their generous contribution that will
make the computer lab a reality,” said Greg
Kesden, SCS director of undergraduate
laboratories at Carnegie Mellon Univer-
sity. “We are dedicated to giving students
full exposure to the complete spectrum of
modern computer science development
practices and we wanted to ensure that
open source methodologies had a central
presence in both our curriculum and in our
new facility.”
Previously, the School for Computer Sci-
ence had a small Linux Lab which held 15
machines. The demand on the lab had out-
stripped its capacity, oftentimes with four
students sharing each workstation.
“The School of Computer Science at Car-
negie Mellon is one of the foremost com-
puter science institutions in the world, and
Red Hat is proud to partner with them in
the creation of an open source computer
lab,” said Michael Cunningham, execu-
tive vice president and general counsel at
Red Hat. “The need for an open source
software lab came from an overwhelming
demand from students and faculty, and
Red Hat’s involvement is a natural exten-
sion of our company’s historical involve-
ment in the education arena.”
The open source computer lab is housed
in the newly constructed Gates Center for
Computer Science, scheduled to be dedi-
cated on September 22. Carnegie Mellon
University has a long history in computer
science excellence and Red Hat’s grant will
enable the university to continue expand-
ing open source into its computer science
curriculum.

Many of the most ef-
fective open source
development prac-
tices can be applied
by all Summit at-
tendees to make this
a truly collaborative
experience. These
principles aren’t
even a stretch at all.
In fact, when most
people picture open
source development,
they think about
über-geeks like Uli Drepper and Larry
Woodman, crouched over their keyboards
analyzing a program’s backtrace in hex in-
structions. Yeah, those guys are here, and
if you are so inclined, do approach them
and geek out all you wish.
Meanwhile, what is often less recog-
nized is that the true power of open source
comes from collaboration of a broad diver-
sity of participants. Also key to the cycle
are testers, writers, and a broad range of
other people who are sharing their practi-
cal experiences on what does and does not
work. Inspiration springs forth from many
different corners of the community. The
most productive discussions involve par-
ticipants who don’t hold back and tell it like
they see it.
With this in mind, while you are here at
the Summit, don’t consider yourself an
attendee — that is selling yourself short.
Rather, consider yourself an open source
collaborator. Share your views. Share them
