How To Get Your Dream Job?

A Dream Job doesn’t have to be a dream – you can and you should get it and work it for as long as it gives you happiness.

The first step is to Know what is Your Dream Job << www.jobxray.com/dream-job.html >>

Once you have that identified it becomes much easier to work towards getting it. As with almost everything in life, you have to ask yourself this one question –

Am I happy professionally? Does it excite me to get up and go to work everyday?

If this question brings a sarcastic smile to your face, you are not alone. Most readers would smile and think, ‘Of course I’m not happy, but what can I do?’

It is you and in most cases ONLY YOU that can make a difference.

Remember, unless you have inherited a fortune or won a lottery, you cannot and should not take up a profession that doesn’t pay. The basic (sad) truth of life is that money does lay the foundation for happiness to build on.

But you don’t have to wallow in the misery of your unsatisfying job either. Today’s world of opportunity has carved out successful (and profitable) careers for activities that were previously considered hobbies.

Try this simple technique – search for your hobby on the internet and add a ‘how to make money with’ in front of it.

Transitioning between your old and new careers is not an overnight process. It is a planned, gradual and incremental course of action.

The goal should be to test the waters before jumping in. This does not mean that the prospects are not good, but reality of your dream job may be different from what you think it is.

Get a Mentor

This is the best way to get the inside details but unfortunately not many use this extremely handy tool. A person working your dream job (or thereabouts) can give you the best picture of what to expect. Asking for help is difficult for most of us, but when done in the right manner, it opens up a treasure of knowledge.

People don’t have time to help – false.

People like to help and your interest in their work tells them that they are probably in their dream job – a much needed affirmation for any job!

If you know someone who can mentor you great, if not, follow this process to identify one;

a. Research the line of work you want to get into and people who have good experience in it.

b. Identify people that you think are a good fit. Don’t chase CEOs of companies, look for a good fit in terms of years of experience, location, stature, etc.

c. Send out a communication note (email/letter/fax) stating your purpose and a brief background.

d. If several people respond, build a relationship with them – don’t put all your eggs in one mentor.

e. After identifying a reliable mentor chalk out a plan of action;

• Clarify doubts/ questions from your personal research

• Understand the prospects of the line of work

• Understand the challenges associated

• If possible, shadow your mentor to get a real feel of the work

Caution

Do not talk to your colleagues (even if they are experts) unless you trust them completely. Words can fly and jeopardize your current employment.

I strongly suggest you not jumping into your Dream Job without testing it first. Working with a mentor and doing your own research can seem time consuming but a few weeks of effort could save you months of work later. You will stand to gain no matter what the result of the mentoring;

a. If you realize that the Dream Job you researched wasn’t the right one for you, you could return happier to your present job or re-start your quest.

b. If you did actually find it to be your Dream Job, you can take the next step and look for relevant employment.

Remember that you are an individual and what works for others need not work for you. Your goals and parameters of happiness should be defined by you and especially if you are switching careers you need to make sure that you know what you want. After that, it’s only a matter of getting the required skills and making the move!
