This course is ideally suited to serious students interested in tackling the challenges and enjoying the rewards of working from a nude model while advancing their drawing and painting skills. Students undertake a systematic study of figurative drawing, painting or both that suits beginning and intermediate students alike. The course covers the fundamentals of figure drawing and painting, as well as anatomy and proportion. Students are encouraged to experiment inside and outside of class. Course structure is arranged around four short poses per session, from which students explore gesture studies and one sustained long pose. Discussions and critiques are also part of each class session, including group critiques and one-on-one critiques and guidance from the instructor.
Course Overview
This course will provide an introduction to the art of drawing and painting human figure in a relaxed studio atmosphere. Students will be exposed to different ways of seeing and depicting figure in space in their chosen medium. It would be possible either draw or paint or both draw and paint, the student will have a choice. We will explore traditional and contemporary concepts of figure representation, and will work on both technical aspects of handling material and formal training of depicting a human form, as well as developing concept, subject matter and emotional content of the work. The classes will begin with short discussion of a reading or a visual presentation, followed by warm-up exercises leading to the main project of the day.

Course Assessment
Students are expected to be on time, present, equipped with materials and working each class. By the end of the semester all projects should be finished and ready for the final critique. If course is taken for credit, grades will reflect: the effort made in completing the work; the quality of execution: craftsmanship, attention to detail, skill in handling tools and material; motivation, involvement in classroom discussions and willingness to take on challenge.

All students are expected to attend classes regularly and promptly, and for the duration of the scheduled instructional time. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness of absence. Repeated absences may result in a grade of "F" for the course. Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Nonattendance does not constitute an official withdrawal. To have ACT 48 Activity Hours for this course reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) you must complete and return the CE Request for Activity Hours Submission Form to the UArts Continuing Studies Office and meet all requirements outlined by the PDE. The University of the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment, reschedule any course or to change the instructor. If a cancellation should occur, students will be notified prior to the start of classes and will have the option of taking another course or receiving a full refund. The University is not responsible for supplies that may be purchased in advance.
