conditions, in order to reduce the safe-ty hazards caused by the diversion ofthe driver's attention from the drivingtask, and by mistakes in selecting con-

trols.83. Application. This standard applies

to passenger cars, multipurpose pas-senger vehicles, trucks, and buses.

84. Defmitions.

Telltale means a display that indi-cates the actuation of a device, a cor-rect or defective functioning or condi-tion, or a failure to function.

Gauge means a display that is listedin 85.1 or in Table 2 and is not a tell-

tale.85 Requirements. Each passenger

car, multipurpose passenger vehicle, truck and bus manufactured with anycontrol listed in 85.1 or in column I ofTable I, and each passenger car, multi-purpose passenger vehicle and truck orbus less than 4,536 kg. GVWR with anydisplay listed in 85.1 or in column I of

Table 2, shall meet the requirements ofthis standard for the location, identi-fication, and illumination of such con-trol or display.

85.1 Location. Under the conditions of86, each of the following controls thatis furnished shall be operali>le by thedriver and each of the following dis-plays that is furnished shall be visible

to the driver. Under the col!lditions of86, telltales are considered visiblewhen activated.

tified as follows:(a) Except as specifie in 85.2.1(b),

any hand-operated contr I listed in col-umn 1 of Table 1 that has a symbol des-ignated for it in column of that tableshall be identified by eit er the symboldesignated in column 3 ( r symbol sub-stantially similar in fi rm to thatshown in column 3) or t e word or ab-breviation shown in col mn 2 of thattable. Any such control for which nosymbol is shown in Ta Ie I shall beidentified by the word 0 abbreviationshown in column 2. Wor or symbolsin addition to the req ired symbol, word or abbreviation y be used atthe manufacturer's disc tion for thepurpose of clarity. Any such control forwhich column 2 of Table I and/or col-umn 3 of Table 1 specif es "Mfr. Op-tion" shall be identified y the manu-facturer's choice of a sy bol, word orabbreviation, as indicate by that spec-ification in column 2 an or column 3.The identification shall b placed on oradjacent to the control. he identifica-tion shall, under the co itions of 56,be visible to the driver nd, except asprovided in 55.2.1.1, 5.2.1.2, and55.2.1.3, appear to the river percep-

tually upright.~(b) 85.2.1(a) does not a ply to a turn

signal control which is perated in aplane essentially parallel to the faceplane of the steering wheel in its nor-mal driving position an ~ which is lo-cated on the left side 0 the steeringcolumn so that it is the c ntrol on thatside of the column neares to the steer-ing wheel face plane. i

55.2.1.1 The identification of the fol-lowing need not appear to the driver

perceptually upright:(a) A master lighting switch or

head1amp and tail lamp control thatadjusts control and display illumina-tion by means of rotation, or any otherrotating control that does not have anoff position.

(b) A horn control.55.2.1.2 The identification of a ro-

tating control other than one describedby 55.2.1.1 shall appear to the driverperceptually upright when the controlis in the off position.

55.2.1.3 The identification of anautomatic vehicle speed qontrol lo-cated on the steering wheel, includingthe steering wheel hub and spokes, need not appear to the driver percep-tually upright except when the vehicle, aligned to the manufacturer's speci-fications, has its wheels positioned forthe vehicle to travel in a straight for-ward direction.

55.2.2 Identification shall be pro-vided for each function of any auto-matic vehicle speed system Gontrol andany heating and air conditipning sys-tem control, and for the extt'eme posi-tions of any such control that regu-lates a function over a quantitativerange. If this identification i~ not spec-ified in Table 1 or 2, it shall be in wordor symbol form unless color coding isused. If color coding is used to identifythe extreme positions of a temperatur~control, the hot extreme shdll be iden-tified by the color red and the cold ex-treme by the color blue.

Example 1. A slide lever controls the tem-perature of the air in the vehicle heatingsystem over a continuous range, from noheat to maximum heat. Since the controlregulates a single function over a quan-titative range, only the extreme positions re-quire Identification.

Example 2. A switch has three positions. forheat, defrost, and air conditioning. Sinceeach position regulates a different function, each position must be identified.

55.2.3 Except for the Low Tire Pres-sure Telltale (that does not identifywhich tire has low pressure), any dis-play located within the passenger com-partment and listed in column I ofTable 2 that has a symbol designated incolumn 4 of that table shall be identi-fied by either the symbol designated incolumn 4 (or symbol substantially

193

similar in form to that Ishown in col-

umn 4) or the word O ~ abbreviation shown in column 3. The ow Tire Pres-

sure Telltale (that doe not identify

which tire has low tire ressure) shall

be identified by either t e symbol des-

ignated in column 4, or t e symbol and

the words designated in Icolumn 4 and

column 3. respectivel " Additional words or symbols may e used at the

manufacturer's discretio for the pur-

pose of clarity. Any tel tales used in

conjunction with a gaug need not be

identified. The identific tion required

or permitted by this se tion shall be

placed on or adjacent i the display that it identifies. The id ntification of

any display shall, under he conditions

of 86, be visible to the river and ap-

pear to the driver percep ally upright.

85.3 Illumination.

85.3.1 Except for foot ~ perated con- trols or hand-operated co troIs mount-

ed upon the floor, floo console. or

steering column, or in e windshield

header area, the identific tion required

by 85.2.1 or 85.2.2 of any control listed

in column 1 of Table 1 an accompanied

by the word "yes" in the~ orresponding space in column 4 shall be capable of

being illuminated whene er the head-

lights are activated. Ho ever, control

identification for a hea ing and air-

conditioning system nee ~ not be illu-

minated if the system d es not direct

air directly upon windshi ld. If a gauge

is listed in column 1 of T ble 2 and ac-

companied by the word "yes" in col-

umn 5. then the gauge I d its identi- fication required by 85.2. shall be illu-

minated whenever the i nition switch

and/or the headlamps e activated.

Controls, gauges, and th ir identifica-

tions need not be illumin ted when the

headlamps are being flas ~ ed. A telltale

shall not emit light exce t when iden-

tifying the malfunction 0 vehicle con-

dition for whose indicatjion it is de-

signed or during a bulb check upon ve-

hicle starting.

85.3.2. Each telltale s~all be of the

color shown in column 2 qf Table 2. The

identification of each tel~tale shall be

in a color that contrasts with the back-

ground.

85.3.3 (a) Means shall be provided for

making controls. gauges, and the iden-

tification of those items visible to the

driver under all driving conditions.

(b) The means for providing the re-

quired visibility-(1) Shall be adjustable to provide at

least two levels of brightness, one ofwhich is barely discernible to a driverwho has adapted to dark ambient road-way conditions.

(2) May be operable manually orautomatically, and

(3) May have levels of br~ghtness atwhich those items and idc:intificationare not visible.

(c) If the level of brightness is ad-

justed by automatic means to a pointwhere those items or their identifica-

tion are not visible to thtt driver, ameans shall be provided to enable thedriver to restore visibility.

S5.3.4 (a) Means shall be providedthat are capable of making telltalesand their identification visible to thedriver under all driving conditions.

(b) The means for provid~ng the re-

quired visibility may be adjustablemanually or automatical~y, exceptthat the telltales and identif!ication forbrakes, highbeams, turn si~nals, andsafety belts may not be adjustableunder any driving condition to a levelthat is invisible.

S5.3.5 Any source of illuminationwithin the passenger compartmentwhich is forward of a transversevertical plane 110 mm rearWard of themanikin "H" point with the driver'sseat in its rearmost driving position, which is not used for the controls anddisplays regulated by this standard, which is not a telltale, and which is ca-pable of being illuminated while the

vehicle is in motion, shall have either

(1) light intensity which is manually or

49 CFR Ch. V (10-1-03 Edition)

automatically adjustablEj to provide atleast two levels of brigh~ess. (2) a sin-gle intensity that is barely discernibleto a driver who has ad~pted to darkambient roadway condiGions, or (3) ameans of being turned off!. This require-ment does not apply to buses that arenormally operated with Ithe passengercompartment illuminated.

S5.4 A common space may be usedto display messages froD[l any sources, subject to the following r~quirements:

(a) The telltales for the brake, highbeam, and tum signal, and the safetybelt telltale required ~y S4.5.3.3 ofStandard No. 208 may not be shown onthe common space.

(b) Except as provided ~n S5.4(e), thetelltales listed in Table ~ shall be dis-played at the initiation of any under-lying condition.

(c) When the underlying condition ex-ists for actuation of two or more mes-sages, the messages shall ibe either-

(1) Repeated automat~cally in se-quence, or

(2) Indicated by visible tneans and ca-pable of being selected by the driver forviewing.

(d) Messages may be cancellableautomatically or by the dl,-iver.

(e) The safety belt tel~tale must bedisplayed and visible duting the timespecified in S7.3 of Stand-/4rd No. 208.

S6. Conditions. The driver is re-strained by the crash proFection equip-ment installed in accordfnce with therequirements of §571.2081 of this part(Standard No. 208). adjusred in accord-ance with the manufact4rer's instruc-tions.
