Coaches Corner

Good evening and welcome to the DRAGONS DEN, first of all I would like to say the support

we received last weekend when we defeated the Barons was first class let’s keep this going as

no doubt you played your part with how the team performed and came from behind to win,

let’s build on this and continue our winning streak.

Tonight we face off against the Fylde Flyers seeing a number of Ex-Deeside players return

therefore these games are always competitive and interesting encounters. Like I highlighted

last weekend we are now at the business end of the season with January being a very

important month for us therefore there is no room for slip ups or to be complacent.

Team update

Very pleased to say that we have no injuries or suspended players after last weekend (No not

even Killer Costelloe LOL). Ben Simister did in fact break his nose and require some stitches

during last weeks game however, credit to the back room staff he only missed a few shifts

before he was treated and back on the bench, this just highlights how passionate these

players are for the game and how well the team is functioning on/off the ice. I can only say all

the guys have been working hard this week in training with all the lines looking really sharp.

Hopefully tonight will be an opportunity to ice some of our developing players as we have a

few U18’s breaking in to the team which is a credit to the Junior Club and their coaches.

Signing off

When I was a young lad many moons ago playing for the Deeside Dragons I remember some

of the chants the supporters used to shout such as “YOUR GOING HOME IN A DEESIDE

AMBULANCE” being a classic one! So lets here more noise for the boys coming from the

stand this week - your support is greatly needed and appreciated.

Match Report Vs Solihull Barons

Dragons beat the Barons 6-4 to go second in the League.

Victory was once again in the air as Deeside Dragons hosted the Solihull Barons this Sunday, beating them with the same score as when they were last on our home turf, 6-4.

It can’t be said the game began with indifference, right from the puck touching the ice the two sides leapt into overdrive. A test at net keeper Dave Clancy’s skill came within 31 seconds of play.

And there was no let up from the Barons’ onslaught. No wonder they found a chink in Clancy’s armour and got one past him at 5:15 to the joy of a very vocal supporting visiting crowd. The Dragon’s reacted in the only way they know how. Jordon Bannon, assisted by Steven Fellows, powered a middle slice right past the Barons defence and left them gaping.

The atmosphere was electric and both sides applied the tension. A penalty at 9:49 for rough checking left the Dragons short-handed and the Barons took advantage and scored a power play goal at 11:17. With another slipping between the net-minders legs at 11:54.

The Dragons battled on, taking a pounding with some very rough checks yet James Parsons answered the call with the Dragon’s second goal at 14:37, assisted by Si Funival. A breakaway attack by Parsons had the home crowd on the edge of their seats but failed to earn the needed equalizer. End of first period score Dragons 2 – Barons 3.

Feeling the goal difference, the Dragons sprang into the second period with a much tighter game plan and a new fierce energy that kept the Barons in check. They turned the screw, and the result? Two goals, precisely 60 nail biting seconds apart. With nothing from the Barons on the board in that period, Brian Worrall, assisted by Bannon then Richard Hughes, assisted by Shaun Kippin showed that the Dragons were still in control, despite four penalties.

Ignorant to discipline yet determined to regain control the Barons didn’t pull any punches in the third and final period. They didn’t get quarter from the Dragons, who came back fighting with a more coherent sense of attack. They clustered the attack zone, layering shot after quick fire shot and found the back of the Baron’s net at 42:24 off the blade of Ben Simister, assisted by Parsons and Funival.

Then the Barons won possession and it seemed the Dragons’ tentative lead was about to dissolve when a shot on the defensive net scored for the away team at 43:59.

Frustration grated at both teams. Penalties for hard checks, tripping and hooking peppered the game. 5-4 to the Dragons was a marginal advantage. We held our breath. The home supporters wished away that which the visiting supporters prayed for- an equalizing goal.

Anticipation turned to delight. Kippin took possession of the puck, broke away, swerved, nearly lost control and blasted it to the back of the Baron’s net.

The final buzzer couldn’t come quick enough. But thankfully, it did.

Final score Deeside Dragons 6 – 4 Solihull Barons.

1. Any pre-game rituals/routines? Nothing set in stone, but I'm usually one of the last out of the room onto the ice.

2. Favourite goal? For the atmosphere rather than the goal, (it was terrible) it would have to be the 1st and only goal of the first leg of the playoff final last season for Hawks V’s Billingham

3. Favourite ever team mate? I could choose whole teams for this. Especially all the boys I grew up playing juniors with, they know who they are!  But one of the guys that stand out would be Jake Nurse. He was one of the first friends I made when I made the step to senior hockey, and he looked after me, to say the least!

4. Favourite current Dragons team mate? Brian Worral, I've known him for quite a few years now, played with him through good and bad. To be back on his line playing well together is great!

5. Favourite arena played in? Not for the arena but the game. I played for Manchester Phoenix against Coventry blaze elite when i was 16 and it was near enough full. To get an assist in that game was pretty good.

6. Worst arena played in? For the actual arena it would have to be Whitley bay. But what a place to go and play a game of hockey! Great atmosphere and always a great game!

7. Most memorable hockey moment to date? There's been quite a few very memorable moments in the last 5 months for me. But I always seem remember scoring a sudden death penalty shot to gain promotion or the Manchester Phoenix under 14s in their first season.

8. When did you start playing ice hockey and why? When I was 8. Lawrence Paul, (Deeside under 18s coach) my cousin introduced me to a novice night at Deeside, and it went from there.

9. Ice hockey hero? Goon's best friend

10. Favourite movie? Eerrrrmmmm...... Fast and furious series, Friends with benefits, Ted, Goon

11. Favourite TV show? Top gear, Ultimate Force.

12. Favourite food? Jack Daniels chicken wings, T.G.I Fridays.

13. Favourite sport other than hockey? Motor sports, motor cross.

14. Whats your day job? Apprentice maintenance engineer at Jaguar Land Rover
