Tracey Ranieri assumed the role of Director of Athletics in January succeeding Steve Garner, who stepped down last May. With her promotion to Director of Athletics Ranieri stepped down as the women’s soccer coach in order to focus her energy on the responsibilities of running the athletics department full time.

Ranieri is currently in her 16th year overall at Oneonta spending the last 12 years as an administrator in the athletics

department. She was serving as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for the department after being promoted two years ago. Ranieri’s main administrative responsibilities during her tenure have include being the Senior Women’s Administrator, overseeing academic services and the NCAA CHAMPS Life Skills program while handling compliance and eligibility for the college’s Div. III sports. She has served as the President of the SUNYAC Conference while being instrumental in developing the conference’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee program.

In 2004 Ranieri received the prestigious SUNY Chancellor’s Award for excellence in professional service. This award is presented to staff that have consistently demonstrated superlative performance within and beyond their position. During her tenure at the College she has had a major impact with her energy and foresight.

In June of 2006 Ranieri was one of eight individuals to graduate from the NCAA Fellows Leadership Development Program. The program was created with the specific goal of enhancing the employment and leadership opportunities for women and ethnic minorities at the senior management level of

intercollegiate athletics administration. The 18-month program provided academic and practical work experiences that will enable the graduates to develop their talents and abilities and mesh those skills with their career aspirations.

Ranieri will leave behind a record of success that will be hard to match in the case of the women’s soccer program.

This past fall she completed her 16th season as the head coach where she built a program from scratch into a national contender. She guided the program to 14 postseason births including eight straight NCAA appearances between 1999 and 2006. The Red Dragons had 12 winning seasons under Ranieri’s guidance including 11 straight from 1996-2006. Her teams won 20 or more games five times with three straight 21-win seasons from 2003-2005. In 2003 she was selected as the NSCAA Div. III national coach of the year after guiding the Red Dragons to the national championship, which they won on their own home field.

Ranieri’s success in the SUNYAC may never be matched with the team winning eight conference titles over the last ten years including seven consecutive from 1999-2005. The Red Dragons set the NCAA all-divisions record for conference games without a loss, which currently stands at 95 games entering the 2007 season.

Ranieri is a 1986 graduate of Ithaca College where she was a standout midfielder in soccer during her playing days. She was an All-American, Soccer Magazine’s Most Valuable Player and a candidate for National Player of the Year. She began her coaching career as an assistant at Cortland, and then moved on to be the head coach at Delhi Tech and Wells College before coming to Oneonta in 1991. In 1999 she was inducted into the New York State Section VI Hall of Fame for her many athletic accomplishments and in 2001 she was honored by Ithaca with induction into its Athletic Hall of Fame. Ranieri holds a Bachelor’s Degree in exercise physiology from Ithaca College, a Master’s in cardiac rehabilitation from East Stroudsburg and a Bachelor’s Degree in nursing from Binghamton.

in the 800 and 1,500 meters last spring. Along with her All-American honors O’Sullivan learned just prior to the NCAA meet that she had been named the USA Track and Field Atlantic Region Division III Female Track Athlete of the Year.

Hiffa earned All-American honors after finishing fourth at 285 lbs. at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships held at Loras College. Hiffa went 3-2 and finished fourth at 285 lbs., after being seeded fifth entering the tournament. Hiffa began his tournament with a 2-0 decision against Andrew Neumann of Augsburg before pinning fourth-seeded John Miller of Luther to advance into the national semifinals. In the semifinals Hiffa ran into the No. 1 seeded Blake Gillis of Wartburg, whom he had lost to earlier in the year 13-4. In this match, Hiffa would fall in the first period by pin, which knocked him into the consolation bracket. In the consolation wrestlebacks, Hiffa would be rematched against Neumann in his opening match. Hiffa would win again, this time by the score of 7-2, which moved him into the third/fourth place match.

Hiffa would get pinned in the second period by unseeded, Jaran Rutledge of Knox College, to take his final

place finish of fourth. With Hiffa’s honor, he becomes the 10th Oneonta

wrestler all-time to earn All-America status. Hiffa finished the season with an overall record of 39-7 and a team-high 15 pins.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (14-12)

The women’s basketball team was extremely optimistic entering the 2006-07 season with good reason. The team was returning three starters and 13 letter winners from a team that won 21 games while capturing the program’s first ECAC Upstate New York championship. Coach McGraw and the team had its sights set on the SUNYAC championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament.

Oneonta’s season began in North Carolina at the Guilford College Tournament where they faced preseason #17 McMurray in its season-opener. The Red Dragons kept the game close for some of the first half, but in the end, fell 80-62. Oneonta left North Carolina 1-1 after capturing the consolation game in a one-sided 82-48 victory against Bennett. Sophomore Christi Podgorski (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) was selected to the All-Tournament Team from Oneonta after collecting 35 points

and 11 boards. The second weekend of the season Oneonta traveled to the western part of New York to participate in the St. John Fisher Tournament. The Red Dragons were matched up against Waynesburg in the opening game and came away with a 56-37 win to advance into the championship game against the hosts. In the final, Oneonta defeated St. John Fisher 65-48 to claim the championship. Tournament MVP, senior Melissa Donohue (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane), scored 16 points in the championship game to lead Oneonta. Sophomore Shannon Weir (Milford, NY/Milford), who was selected to the All-Tournament Team, added 13 points and six rebounds in the title game. After dropping its conference opener to Cortland 70-62 on Nov. 28, Oneonta ran off six straight wins to raise its record to 9-2 on Jan. 9.

Unfortunately, the win streak would not be duplicated as Oneonta struggled for the remainder of the season, winning only five of its final 15 games. They did qualify as the sixth seed for the conference tournament, but were eliminated in the first round with a 71-62 loss at Oswego.

Donohue finished the season leading the team in scoring at 9.6 points per game while being the lone representative on the All-Conference Team.

WRESTLING (13-7-1)

The 2006-07 wrestling season began, as it usually does, at the Monarch Invitational hosted by King’s College. The Red Dragons placed third as a team and brought home four place

winners that included one individual champion, freshman Josh Wake (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy), who won the 174 lbs. weight class in his collegiate tournament debut. Over the next two weeks of the season, Oneonta finished 3rd at its own Invitational and 7th at the Petrofes Tournament at Messiah College. Senior Dennis Norton (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) was Oneonta’s only individual champion during the two tournaments, having won the 197 lbs. weight class at the Oneonta Invitational. After splitting a pair of matches at WPI to start the dual portion of the schedule, Oneonta traveled south to Florida to participate in the Citrus Invitational and the Citrus Duals. The Red Dragons ended up placing 6th at the Invitational while winning two of three dual matches. Senior Trevor Hiffa (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) won an individual title at the Invitational, winning the 285 lbs. weight class. Oneonta started January by winning six of nine dual matches while placing 2nd at the Adidas/Brute Invitational at Ursinus. Hiffa claimed another individual title while freshman Erik Johanson (Schuylerville, NY/Schuylerville) won his first collegiate individual title at 125 lbs. The last big tournament for Oneonta prior to the ECWC was the New York State Collegiate Tournament at the University of Buffalo. Oneonta finished 8th overall at the championships and brought home four All- State wrestlers. Joining Hiffa as All-State wrestlers were, seniors Ryan Higgins (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) and Scott Gorman (Seaford, NY/Seaford) and freshman Geoff Rosa (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy). Oneonta finished the season 3-2-1 in dual matches while placing 6th at the ECWC championships hosted by Ithaca. Hiffa and Higgins won their respective weight classes and were automatic qualifiers for the NCAA championships. Hiffa placed fourth at the NCAA’s while Higgins lost two matches and was eliminated on the first day of competition.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (11-15)

The 2006-07 men’s basketball season began on the road at Washington & Lee for a tip-off tournament. Oneonta dropped a pair of games and finished fourth in the tournament, losing to Averett 71-55 in the opener and 77-62 to Dennison in the consolation game. Senior Bill Heslin (Schaghticoke, NY/Hoosic Valley) was selected to the All-Tournament Team for his two-game performance of 36 points including 22 in the consolation game. Oneonta won its next three games, all of which were SUNYAC games, to sit at the top of the standings at the end of the first semester. The wins were all at home and were against Cortland, Buffalo State and Fredonia. Before the first semester came to a close, Oneonta had four non-conference games to play including two in Hawaii at the Hoop-n-Surf Classic. Unfortunately, the Red Dragons came up on the short end of all four contests including a 57-49 loss

to cross-hill rival Hartwick. The lone bright spot on the Hawaii trip was Heslin earning All-Tournament honors. Oneonta opened January with a 67-60 win against St. Joseph’s of Vermont to win its first non-conference game of the season. Oneonta followed that win with a loss at Utica before picking up its fourth straight win in the SUNYAC at Plattsburgh. The Red Dragons’ first conference setback came on the second day of the trip to the North Country when they couldn’t hold off Potsdam in a 62-56 loss. Oneonta went 6-6 over the final 12 games of the season that included a three-game winning streak and a three-game losing skid. The Red Dragons qualified in the fifth spot for the Conference tournament and were eliminated in the quarterfinals at SUNYIT 90-73. Oneonta had two players average double figures in scoring this season led by Heslin at 13.5 points per game followed by classmate Eric Bratt (Roslyn, NY/Roslyn), who averaged 11.1 points per game. Senior Michael Reardon (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) led the team with assists while senior Kevin Reed (Downsville, NY/Downsville) led the team in rebounding at 6.3 boards per contest.

INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

The indoor track & field teams were in a transition of sorts having graduated some of its top performers from the previous year especially on the women’s side of the ledger. As the season progressed some of the newcomers started to fill some of the holes while the returning runners continued to lead the squads to some strong team performances at the end of the year. The men and women participated in three non-scoring Invitational meets to start the season, which began on Dec. 2 at the Cornell Relays. The teams finished the first semester with a meet at St. Lawrence and began the second semester also at St. Lawrence. The first scoring meet for the men and women was the last weekend of January at the Class of ’32 Invitational at Colgate. The men placed 8th with 37 points while the women were 5th with 50 points. Senior Maureen Verdier (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) won both the 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles and was selected as the Most Outstanding Female Athlete of the meet. Both teams spent the first two weeks of February competing at non-scoring meets hosted by Syracuse, MIT and Boston University. Oneonta had a few performances that got athletes on the NCAA provisional list while one athlete, senior Kaitlin O’Sullivan (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) ran well enough at BU to hit the automatic standard in the mile. She also provisionally qualified in the 800, an event that she would ultimately get to run at the NCAA as a double qualifier. The third weekend of February brought Oneonta to

Athletic Department NewsELIZABETH WAGNER NAMED SOFTBALL

COACH

Former Sidney High School softball standout, Liz Wagner assumed the role of head softball coach in January taking the reigns from Deanna Parks who stepped down last August to take the head job at Siena after two years at Oneonta State. Wagner comes to Oneonta after most recently serving as an assistant coach at Harvard University in Boston during both

the 2003 and 2004 seasons and as a graduate assistant at Troy State University in Alabama during the 2002 season. In both places she worked primarily with pitchers and outfielders while also assisting in practice planning and office management. A 1993 graduate of Sidney High School, Wagner earned a softball scholarship to the University of Massachusetts where she graduated in 1998 with a degree in Environmental Design. While at UMASS she was a four-year member of the softball team and was named Atlantic-10 All Conference and Pitcher of the Year as a sophomore. Her team won four Atlantic-10 Championship Titles and won two NCAA Regional Titles advancing to the Women’s College World Series in her junior and senior seasons. In 1999 after graduating from UMASS she spent a season in Italy, playing professional softball for Robuschi Softball of the Italian Federation of Baseball and Softball. While serving as a graduate assistant at Troy State in she completed a Masters of Business Administration degree, which she completed in 2004.

ELIZABETH MCGRAIL NAMED WOMEN’S SOCCER COACH

Former Oneonta State All-American soccer player, Liz McGrail (Stamford, NY) was named the women’s soccer coach in January taking the reigns from former coach Tracey Ranieri, who was named the director of athletics.

McGrail is no stranger to Oneonta having played for the Red Dragons while also having served as an assistant coach for three years from 2001-03. As a athlete she was the first women’s soccer player to earn All-America honors when she was a first team selection at the conclusion of the 2000 season. The accolades and honors that McGrail earned during her four-year career are numerous. She is the school’s all-time leading scorer for both men’s and women’s soccer with 137 points and is the only women’s player to earn the SUNYAC MVP award three times. McGrail was a four-time All-SUNYAC selection and a three-time All-State and All-Region player while leading Oneonta to three conference championships.

During McGrail’s senior year the team reached 20 wins for the first time while advancing to the final 16 in the NCAA tournament. During her four seasons the program put together a 65-15-6 record and made three NCAA and one ECAC tournament appearance.

McGrail also helped lead the women’s basketball and softball teams to the NCAA tournaments during her final year of competition in 2000-01. She was the first player off the bench for the basketball team and was the starting center fielder for the softball team. In softball she was an All-Conference and All-Region player as well.

Professionally she spent three years playing for the Hampton Roads Piranhas of the W-League, and was a member of the 2003 team that captured the W-League National Championship while going 15-0.

McGrail returns to Oneonta after having served one-year stints as the head women’s soccer coach at Tri-State University in Indiana and at SUNY-Oswego.

the SUNYAC championship meet at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Some outstanding performances on the men’s side got them to third place overall while the women finished fifth place in the final standings. Leading the men at the conference meet were seniors Adam Remillard (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) and Jeremy Cline (Gowanda, NY/Cattaraugua-Little Valley) and junior Alex Grout (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), who each won an individual SUNYAC title in helping the men score 90 points. Remillard won the long jump, Cline won the triple jump and Grout won the 800. Leading the women at the SUNYAC meet was O’Sullivan, who doubled up with wins in the 800 and mile while teaming with Verdier and sophomores Melissa Kanterman (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and Janine Sacca (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) to claim a third SUNYAC title in the 1,600-meter relay. The final competition of the winter was the ECAC championship meet hosted by Wesleyan University. The men finished in the top-10 in seventh place while the women placed 16th overall.Top performers on the day included O’Sullivan, who successfully defended her title in the 1,000 meters while setting a new meet record in the process and sophomore Joe Reed (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), who claimed the title in the 200 meters, which was the first ECAC championship for the men’s indoor program. O’Sullivan was the lone representative from Oneonta at the NCAA Div. III championships this winter. She competed in both the 800 and mile and earned All-American honors in both events to put the Red Dragons in 13th place overall.

SWIMMING & DIVING

The swimming & diving teams welcomed many new faces in 2006-07, many of which would be top performers for the squads at the end of the season. In dual-meet action the women came away with a 4-5 record overall while the men were 3-6. The season began for both teams at the Oswego relays and both teams came away with third place finishes. The highest finishing foursome for the event was the men’s 400-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay both finishing third respectively. After back-to-back weekends of dual action against Oswego, New Paltz and Utica College, Oneonta traveled to Potsdam for the North Country Invitational. Both teams came home with team titles including the women’s second straight North Country team championship. Top performers for Oneonta were juniors Danielle Ulanowski (Croton-on-Hudson, NY/JFK Catholic) and Peter Millspaugh (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush), who each won three individual events during the two-day event. The final competitions for the semester were at the ECAC winter championship meet and a dual meet at Cortland.

The two teams both finished ninth at the ECAC meet while both fell to Cortland. The month of January was filled with dual meets for both teams along with its annual trek to Troy, NY to compete in the Kumpf Invitational at Rensselaer. On separate weekends the men were fifth and the women fourth overall at the Invitational. The final competition of the season was the SUNYAC championship meet at Erie Community College. Both teams placed sixth overall at the championships, which was an improvement of one place for both teams from the previous year. Oneonta’s highest place-finisher on the women’s side was freshman Michelle Sano (Albany, NY/Albany), who was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke. Millspaugh, who was second in the 100 back, third in the 200-yard backstroke and part of the 200-yard medley relay foursome that was third to earn a medal, led the men.

This past winter he captured his first individual SUNYAC title with a leap of 13.59 meters in the triple jump to earn first team All-Conference honors. His other All-Conference honor came as a sophomore when he placed third in the triple jump at the SUNYAC meet. In the classroom he has been honored for his hard work earning SUNYAC Commissioners List and All-Academic Team honors on multiple occasions and was inducted into the National Student Athlete honor society Chi Alpha Sigma in the spring of 2005.

The Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete awards are given annually in each sport to a first or second team All-Conference member with the highest grade-point average. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least three semesters at their college.
