Musu Jackson-Buckner wins national title inleading track & field team

The menʼs and womenʼs track & field teams completed another spring season that concluded at the NCAA Div. III national meet with the women finishing tied for third place in the country. The highlight for the Red Dragons was the first national champion for the program and the collegeʼs first individual national champion in nearly thirty years. In all, Oneonta came back from Benedictine University with nine All-Americans including five individual and one relay.

Senior Musu Jackson-Buckner (Buffalo, NY) led the honorees overall winning the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.75, which was the fourth fastest time ever in the event at the Div. III championship meet. For the championships,

Junior Chris Salamida Drafted by Houston Astros

Junior Chris Salamida (Watervliet, NY) got some great news on Tuesday, June 6 when he got a phone call from the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball informing him that they had drafted him in the 13th round of the first-year player draft. Salamida, who completed his second season with Oneonta, was the 399th pick overall. Salamida learned of his selection via cell phone while he was at a summer league game. “When I found out, I was psyched,” said Salamida. “The scout called me to let me know. March. Jackson-Buckner, who was selected as the Outstanding Female Athlete of the Meet, and OʼSullivan, led the way with one individual title each. Though not as deep as last year, the menʼs program was certainly not short on talent and awards this spring. Senior Scott Pollard (Spring Valley, NY) and freshman Joe Reed (Rome, NY) led the squad all spring long and each brought home SUNYAC championships. Reed continued his success from the indoor season to outdoors and took home the “double” at the conference championship meet. In taking home a double by winning the 100 and 200-meter dashes he defeated two-time defending SUNYAC champion, Nick Wetherby of Cortland in both events. Pollard defended his 400-meter indoor championship by winning the outdoor 400 for the first time. He was also a medalist in the 200 meters and the 1600 relay finishing third and second respectively.

BASEBALL (31-11) The baseball team didnʼt suffer any let down in 2006 trying to follow their record-setting season of 2005. This yearʼs squad had to rely on its pitching to lead the way to 31 wins and a berth in the ECAC Upstate New York championship game. The staff combined to record a 2.73 earned-run average while holding opponents to a .223 batting average. The leaders of the staff were juniors Chris Salamida (Watervliet, NY) and Erik Weber (Bainbridge, NY). The two combined to win 14 games while striking out 132 batters in 147.2 innings. Salamida led the team in wins (8), strikeouts (75) and ERA (1.70). The 2005 season began with a nine-game schedule in Cocoa Beach, Fla. The Red Dragons played well and returned home with a 7-2 record that

included a 5-4 win against perennial NCAA contender Bridgewater State. Senior Mike Kuratnick (Apalachin, NY) led the offense with a 4-for-4 effort including a triple and a run batted in. Salamida pitched six strong innings striking out 10 and allowing three hits and one earned run. After returning north the Red Dragons traveled west for back-to-back doubleheaders against St. John Fisher and RIT. Oneonta came home 1-3 including two, one-run losses to RIT in which Oneonta collected only six hits and scoring three runs. Oneonta then got rolling and ran off eight straight wins all of which were SUNYAC contests to hit the mid-season mark at 17-5 overall and 8-0 in the conference. All of Oneontaʼs wins came on the road as they assumed the early season lead in the SUNYAC by one game over

Cortland, who was 7-1. During the second half of the season Oneonta put together a 13-3 record with its three losses coming to nationally ranked Ithaca, Cortland and Plattsburgh. The Red Dragons finished 12-2 in conference play and tied with its rivals from Cortland. Unfortunately, the loss to Plattsburgh cost Oneonta the tiebreaker with Cortland, which meant the conference tournament, would be at Cortland again this year. Oneonta opened the SUNYAC tournament against Plattsburgh and the two teams battled to a 1-0 score in favor of the Red Dragons. Salamida out-dueled Cardinalʼs starter Dan Hoffman in the game despite allowing five hits to Hoffmanʼs three. Fortunately for Oneonta one of the three hits was a home run by Kuratnick that Salamida made stand up in recording the complete-game shutout. Oneontaʼs run ended on the second day with a pair of losses, first to Brockport and then to host Cortland. Against Brockport, the bats were silent in a 4-3 loss and, against Cortland, a five-run fifth inning for the hosts gave them a 7-3 lead en route to a 14-3 win. Next up for Oneonta was New Paltz in the semifinals of the ECAC tournament at home. Salamida pitched another gem, this time a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts in a 1-0 win. Oneonta scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh, which was all they needed with Salamida in command. Kuratnick figured in the decision again with an infield hit that drove in the lone run for the Red Dragons. In the championship game Oneonta battled RIT to a 1-1 score through five innings before the visitors scored four runs in the sixth to take the lead. Still trailing 8-2 entering their last at-bat, Oneonta rallied with six runs to force extra innings. The game-tying hit came from Salamida, who hit a two-run double with two outs. The game would continue to the 11th inning where RIT scored four runs and then held Oneonta scoreless to leave town with a 12-8 win. Junior Brandon Galutz (Cortland, NY) led Oneonta offensively with a .377 average. He also led the team in hits (49), doubles (17), RBIs (28), home runs (5) and total bases (85).

MEN’S LACROSSE (10-7) The menʼs lacrosse team entered the season with many new faces

hope to make the big leagues.”While playing at Oneonta, Salamida was the teamʼs top starter

while also playing outfield and being a designated hitter. He compiled a two-year record of 15-3 in 21 appearances that included 18 starts. He threw six complete games including two shutouts in his last two starts in a Red Dragon uniform. In 127-2/3 innings he allowed just 70 hits while striking out 137 batters. He had a 1.55 earned run average and held opponents to a .164 batting average against.

At the plate Salamida hit .336, collecting 102 hits including eight home runs. He scored 68 runs, drove in 57 runs and collected 159 total bases. The two-time All-Region and All-SUNYAC selection also stole 34 bases.

Heʼs ready to be at the next level,” said Oneonta baseball coach Rick Ferchen. “Heʼs the best pitcher Iʼve ever had in my 10 years here. Heʼs got a good fastball thatʼs consistently around 89-90 mph along with a slider, a changeup and an occasional knuckleball. He has command over all his pitches and he developed the mental toughness this spring to get to the next level.”

and many young players and managed to exceed expectations en route to a 10-7 record and a third straight ECAC tournament berth. The Red Dragons played in many tight games that came down to the final minutes and came out 4-1 in games decided by one goal. Oneonta came out of the gate strong winning its first three games of the season including the first two by a combined four goals. The third win came in the first road game of the season at Alfred by the score of 10-3. After dropping a pair of games, one against nationally ranked Ithaca 9-3 and the second to Eastern Connecticut 5-4, Oneonta won back-to-back games to raise its overall record to 5-2. A 10-5 loss to Hamilton at home led to three straight wins including a 2-0 mark in the SUNYAC as thee end of the regular season approached. The final win of the streak was a thrilling 9-8 win at Potsdam where Oneonta held off a late rally by the Bears to secure the win. The Red Dragons finished out the season going 2-2 in the conference to qualify in the third slot for the SUNYAC tournament. In the semifinals Oneonta was at Cortland and fell 8-5 to end its hopes at a conference title. Cortland would win the conference title en route to the NCAA Div. III national championship. Oneontaʼs season would continue in the ECAC tournament as the third seed and would play at Nazareth in the semifinals. The hosts jumped out to a big early lead en route to a 15-5 victory, which ended Oneontaʼs 2006 season. Freshman Matt Harvey (Bayshore, NY), who was selected as the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, led the team in scoring with 27 points. Junior transfer Pete Glass (Hurley, NY) was second with 25 points including two game-winning goals and three man-up goals, which was tied for the team lead with freshman Troy Lepore (Cortlandt, NY).

MEN’S TENNIS (11-3) The menʼs tennis team took a giant leap forward this season under second-year coach, Bill May, putting together an 11-3 dual-match record during the year. The team played many of the top teams from around the region along with a few NAIA and Div. II schools thrown into the mix. The year began at the Flower City Tournament hosted by the University of Rochester back in September. The Red Dragons dropped its opening match to the hosts, which put them into the consolation side of the tournament. Oneonta was able to bounce back and win its final two matches against Hobart and RIT to come back 2-1. The next competition for Oneonta was the ECAC North Tournament at Vassar College during the final weekend of the month. The Red Dragons finished tied

for fifth place with 11.5 points. Freshman Joseph Erwin (East Quogue, NY) led the way on the weekend in singles play. He advanced all the way into the championship match at fifth singles before falling to the top seed in the flight in straight sets. Oneonta did send senior co-captains Eric Bratt (Roslyn, NY) and Matt Deitch (Monroe, NY) to the ITA regional tournament at Vassar. Bratt won a first-round singles match before falling in the round of 32. Deitch lost his opening match, but did win a match in the consolation draw that finished his singles play. The two also played in the doubles draw and lost their qualifying match. The spring season began in Florida where the men went 1-2 overall against some strong competition. Oneonta won its first match of the trip against Warner Southern before dropping its final two matches against Florida Institute of Technology and St. Leo. Call it home cookin ̓or the cold weather of the northeast, but as soon as the team returned north, they did not lose another match for the rest of the spring. The Red Dragons steam-rolled through teams en route to a season-ending win streak of eight matches. Five of the eight wins were convincing 7-0 matches for Oneonta including a shutout of cross-city rival Hartwick. Bratt finished the year leading the Oneonta in wins with 12 followed by sophomore Ryan Pettus (Kingston, NY) who won 10 matches. Freshman Shota Kanzaki (Yokohama-City Kahagawa, Japan) finished the spring 7-0 after joining the team in January.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE (6-11) The womenʼs lacrosse team began the 2006 spring with the intentions

of rebounding from the previous yearʼs disappointing showing while also making a return to the SUNYAC tournament. The team definitely had an improved season overall with many new faces and also made the conference tournament. Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 start with wins against Lynchburg and Utica. The Red Dragons showed some offense in picking up the wins combining for 36 goals in the two wins. Oneonta then hit a rough patch dropping its next six straight games including a 16-15 loss versus Rensselaer in sudden-victory overtime. In the middle of April the Red Dragons won its final four games of the season in a five-game stretch. All the wins came in the SUNYAC, which assured the Red Dragons that they would be in the conference tournament. In the SUNYAC tournament

Oneonta played Geneseo and fell by the close score of 13-11. Oneonta only trailed 7-5 at halftime and quickly tied the score at 8-8 with a 3-1 run in the first eight minutes of the second half. The wheels seemed to fall off after that with Geneseo running off five unanswered goals over the next 10 minutes to take a 13-8 lead. Oneonta made it interesting with three straight goals of its own, the final one coming with under three minutes left. The Red Dragons had three players with thirty or more goals this spring led by senior Jess Garabedianʼs (Baldwin, NY) 52. Junior Erin Maybeck (Huntington, NY) and sophomore Kristin OʼLeary (Huntington Station, NY) scored 36 and 31 goals respectively.

SOFTBALL (19-21) The 2006 softball season was a roller coaster ride of sorts with the team never being able to break out of win-a-few, lose-a-few. Even though they were able to put together a six-game win streak towards the end of the season, they just couldnʼt seem to carry the momentum into the conference tournament as they had in recent years. The season began with a pair of doubleheaders on the road at Mary Washington and Christopher Newport on Feb. 28 and Mar. 1 respectively. Oneonta ended up splitting both to start the season 2-2. In both doubleheaders Oneonta dropped the first game and came back to win the second game. The next two weekends Oneonta traveled south to Virginia Beach and Salisbury to participate in tournament action. At the Atlantic versus East Challenge hosted by Virginia Wesleyan,

Oneonta went 2-2 including a 10-5 loss to #17 in the country, at the time, Moravian. At the Sea Gull Classic hosted by Salisbury, Oneonta came home 1-3 including a loss to the #2 team in the country Salisbury. The Red Dragons opened the tournament with a 3-2 win against Cabrini before dropping its final three games. After Oneonta dropped a pair to #19 Plattsburgh, the Red Dragons found themselves in a battle to qualify for the SUNYAC tournament with eight games remaining in conference play. Fortunately, four of those games were against the two teams they were battling with for the sixth and final spot. Oneonta left no doubt as they swept both Oswego and New Paltz to gain the tiebreak advantage if necessary and went on to finish 10-10 in the SUNYAC. The clinching games for Oneonta came against Potsdam when they swept the Bears at home by the scores of 7-2 and 9-1. In the conference tournament Oneonta was done on the first day with losses to Plattsburgh and Cortland. Senior Michelle Norwich (Mohawk, NY) and junior Allison Bandos (Hagaman, NY) led the team in hitting .354 and .353 respectively. Norwich was also first in doubles (11), RBIs (28) and total bases (65).

For the past two Spring semesters, the student-athletes of Oneonta State have sold raffle tickets to benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life but this Springʼs fund raiser would take on a whole new meaning when one of our very own student-athletes, senior Eileen Flood of the womenʼs basketball team was diagnosed with Hodgkinʼs Disease Stage II. Although diagnosed in February, the news did not reach the family of athletics until mid-March.

At the March 22 SAAC meeting, as SAAC Advisor Colleen Cashman addressed the representatives of the Relay for Life raffle, she broke the news that this yearʼs fund raiser would take on a whole new meaning as one of their own student-athletes had just been diagnosed with cancer. The SAAC representatives were then issued the challenge of rallying their teams to sell more tickets than they ever had to donate the money this year in honor of Eileen.

The athletic teams responded by raising $2160.00, their highest total yet! This money was then donated at the Binghamton Relay for Life held in June.

Although some might think that this was good enough to help the cause; SAAC President Amanda Villari organized the Spring community service project for SAAC representatives as an all you can eat contest to benefit Flood. Soon, flyers could be seen posted around campus for the HOT! HOT! HOT! eating contest sponsored by Sodexho and the OAS College store.

On Wednesday, May 3 in Wilsbach dining hall the community of Oneonta State came together as residence halls, fraternity members and athletes squared off in a hot dog eating contest and a hot wing eating contest. The dining hall was packed with shoulder-to-shoulder people cheering on the contestants and many could be seen dropping money into the donation buckets being passed around by SAAC representatives.

In just one hour over $650 was raised in Floodʼs honor to once again be donated to the American Cancer Society. Unbeknownst to anyone, Flood had made arrangements to attend the contest, and in a surprise move took the microphone to say a few words to the crowd expressing her thanks and appreciation for attending

and participating in the fundraiser. Flood said she was touched by the number of students who showed their support by attending the event. “Itʼs so moving to have so many people behind me.” Flood said. “Itʼs like an entire community is rooting me on.” She is currently in the last rounds of her chemotherapy treatments and her spirits are high. In other news, the athletes of Oneonta State were once again honored by the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators for the fourth time in five years for their community service project of donating Christmas gifts to the Migrant Education Outreach Program. In the category of On-Going Project or Activity, Oneonta State Athletics was given the Honorable Mention award. The gifts purchased for the migrant workers children represented over $1000.00 in donated money from approximately 400 student-athletes allowing 21 families to celebrate Christmas. Each year the athletic teams at Oneonta State are involved in numerous, diverse community service events to help those in need, but this event is by far one of the most fulfilling to our student-athletes. On February 11th, student-athletes from many teams participated in the American Heart Association Heart Run/Walk held in the Alumni Field House Dewar Arena. This event coordinated by Tracey Ranieri, Associate Director of Athletics and head womenʼs soccer coach has raised over $7000 for the past two years.

THREE ONEONTA STATE ATHLETES EARN SPRING ACADEMIC ACCOLADES

Jackson-Buckner, Robertson and Garabedian selected as Academic All-Americans

ONEONTA, N.Y.—ESPN the Magazine released its spring Academic All-American teams today and Oneonta State had three athletes earn national honors for their outstanding accomplishments on-and-off the playing fields. Seniors Jessica Garabedian (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin), Musu Jackson-Buckner (Buffalo, NY/The Buffalo Seminar) and graduate student Ashlee Robertson (Mechanicville, NY/Shenendehowa) were honored. The three selections for Oneonta completes a 2005-06 year in which a total of four athletes earned national honors and brings the overall total to 11. Garabedian, who was selected to the second team At-Large, closed out her collegiate career this spring with the best season of her career, scoring a team high 52 goals and registering seven assists. A two-year team captain, Garabedian was a first team All-Region and All-SUNYAC selection this spring. For her career she finished with 123 goals and 14 assists, giving her 137 career points.

Off of the field Garabedian has found success earning countless academic honors during her four-years at Oneonta. This spring she was named the 2005-2006 Oneonta State Female Scholar Athlete of the Year for the second straight year along with being named the SUNYAC Womenʼs Lacrosse Chancellor Scholar-Athlete for the second straight year. Earlier this spring she was recognized as one of the top overall students in the SUNY system by receiving a SUNY Chancellorʼs Award for Academic Excellence.

Jackson-Buckner and Robertson have been the dynamic duo for Oneonta State track & field during the last two years, so itʼs only fitting to have them selected together to the ESPN the Magazine track & field second team. Jackson-Buckner capped her collegiate running career this spring with a National Championship in the 200 meters at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. She also returned from Illinois with national runner-up honors in the 100 meters and a third place finish as a member of the 400 meter relay, earning All-American honors in all three events. Along with her accolades from the NCAA meet she was named the US Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches

Association (USTFCCCA) Atlantic Region Female Track Athlete of the Year last week. Her career line includes being a six time All-American, six time ECAC Champion, and 17 time SUNYAC Champion. Off of the track Jackson-Buckner has maintained a high level of excellence in the classroom earning numerous academic accolades. This spring she was named the SUNYAC Chancellor Scholar Athlete in womenʼs track and field, a NYS Womenʼs Collegiate Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete and inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma – the national college athlete honor society. She has been a multiple-time SUNYAC Commissionerʼs List and All-Academic Team honoree and will pursue a masterʼs degree at Syracuse University this fall. Robertson capped an outstanding career as a member of the track and field team this spring by returning from the NCAA championship meet with All-American honors in the 400 meters and the 400 relay to give her seven for her career, the most ever by an Oneonta State athlete. Along with being a seven time All-American her career statistics include being a five time ECAC Champion and 14 time SUNYAC Champion. Academically Robertson has also put together an impressive resume earning numerous academic honors over her career. A first semester graduate student this spring, Robertson graduated from the college this past December with a degree in Elementary Education. Her academic accolades include being recognized as a NYS Womenʼs Collegiate Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete in the spring of 2005, being recognized by the college as one of itʼs “Best and Brightest”, earning SUNYAC Commissionerʼs list and All-Academic team multiple times and being inducted into the National Student Athletes Honor Society-Chi Alpha Sigma. ESPN The Magazine sponsors the Academic All-America program, and the CoSIDA Board and members of the Academic All-America Committee, which amounts to just over 100 total voters, select the National Team. To be eligible for the national ballot, the student-athlete had to be selected to its Districtʼs first team. Nominations for the District team are submitted by each athleteʼs Sports Information Directors based on the nominees accumulating at least a 3.2 GPA while being a starter or significant contributor to their team.
