their opponents 52-7 over that stretch. They finished the regular season with a 30-7-1 overall record while going 12-2 in conference play to earn the second seed in the SUNYAC tournament held at top-seeded Cortland. The Red Dragons opened the SUNYAC tournament against third-seeded Plattsburgh with a 3-2 victory. Senior Brent Tortarella (Staatsburg, NY) led the way for the Red Dragons turning in a 3-3 performance at the plate while Mike Schellinger (Fayetteville, NY) picked up the win throwing seven-innings before giving way to sophomore Don Lawrence (Norwich, NY) who came in to pitch the final two innings and pick up the save. The victory over Plattsburgh kept Oneonta alive in the winners bracket and matched them against Brockport the following day. Against Brockport the Red Dragon bats came out hot erasing an early 1-0 deficit in the first inning with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Oneonta then scored seven runs over the next four innings to take a 10-2 lead after five innings of play. The Red Dragons closed the door for good in the eighth with four runs including a two-run homer from Tortarella to make it 14-3, before the Golden Eagles added a run in the ninth for the final margin of victory. Sophomore Chris Salamida (Watervliet, NY) picked up the win for Oneonta throwing six-innings and striking out nine. The victory moved Oneonta into the championship game the following day against losers bracket winner Cortland for the SUNYAC title, with Cortland needing to defeat Oneonta twice to claim the title. In the first championship game Oneonta wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as junior Chris Brew (Vestal, NY) led off the game with a single and came around to score on a RBI single by Salamida. Oneonta then added another run to take a 2-0 lead after one-inning of play. Oneonta was able to keep Cortland off the board until the fourth when they plated one run, cutting Oneontaʼs lead to one. The Red Dragons of Oneonta held the lead until the sixth when Cortland took the lead with two runs on one hit to make the score 3-2 in favor of Cortland. Neither team was able to manufacture any runs the rest of the way as Cortland took the win and forced the decisive championship game for the conference title and automatic NCAA tournament berth. In the championship final Cortland took the early lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 3-0. They added five more in the bottom of the fourth before Oneonta got on the board in the fifth with two runs of their own to cut the Cortland lead to six. Unfortunately for Oneonta this is as close as they would get as Cortland went on to take the victory 14-3. As the top seed and host for the ECAC Upstate tournament Oneonta opened against fourth-seeded RIT. The Red Dragons took the early lead with a solo home run in the second inning by senior Rob Elmendorf (Hyde Park, NY) to make it 1-0, before RIT got on the board in the fourth. Between the fourth and sixth innings the visitors would put eight runs on the board for an 8-1 lead. Oneonta made an attempt at a come back in the seventh scoring a single run before leaving the bases loaded to end the inning. In game two Cortland jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before Oneonta put two runs on the board in the top of the third to cut the Cortland lead to three. From there it would be all Cortland as the rival Red Dragons pounded out 19-hits in a 14-2 victory. Determined to finish its season on a high note the Red Dragons then finished off their regular season schedule with four straight wins, outscoring Mike Schellinger

Baseball (32-10-1)

The 2005 baseball team completed its best season in the history of the program compiling a 32-10-1 record while playing for the conference championship and qualifying for the ECAC tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years. The team opened its season with 11 games in Coco Beach, Florida while the snow melted in upstate New York. Elmendorf finished the game with a 4-4 performance at the plate in a losing effort for Oneonta as RIT took the victory 8-2, ending Oneontaʼs season.

Softball (21-16)

The 2005 softball team entered the season with high expectations after capturing the SUNYAC title in 2004. The team began the season with its highest pre-season ranking ever coming in at 23rd after finishing 25th in the country the previous year. The Red Dragons schedule would not be easy as it was packed with opponents who were also ranked throughout the season. The team opened its season at the Atlantic vs. East Challenge in Virginia Beach, where they battled rain but still came home with a 2-1 record against quality opponents. The following weekend they traveled to Salisbury, Maryland for the Sea Gull Invitational where they battled then second ranked Moravian to a 0-0 score through seven-innings before falling in the eighth 1-0. The team then lost their next two games before picking up a 4-2 win over Cabrini on the final day of the tournament to return home with a 3-4 overall record. When the snow finally disappeared at the beginning of April the Red Dragons took to the field to begin the northern part of their schedule with three straight SUNYAC contests. Following splits with both Brockport and Buffalo State the Red Dragons got their first sweep of the season against Fredonia, winning 2-1 and 5-2 and moving its season record above .500 for the first time of the season. The next eight games were all on the road as the team traveled to Ithaca, Union, Potsdam and Plattsburgh compiling a 4-4 record over that stretch. This included a two-game sweep of SUNYAC opponent Potsdam and a split with conference foe Plattsburgh as the battle of conference standings began to shape

up. The team returned home where they hosted Hartwick in a single game, winning 8-1 before they took to the road again. This time the Red Dragons traveled to Oswego and Cortland for a pair of key conference games. At Oswego the Red Dragons won the first game 2-1 however they were unable to put together any offense in the second game falling 2-0. The following day at Cortland the offense would once again be hard to come by as the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie through regulation before Oneonta came through with two runs on three hits in the ninth-inning to take the win in the first game. The Cortland bats would wake up fast in game-two as the rival Red Dragons put

a three spot on the board in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 10-1, six-inning victory over Oneonta. Oneonta would wrap up its regular season schedule with three conference series, playing New Paltz at home and SUNYIT on the road while making up a game against Geneseo in-between. Against New Paltz the Oneonta bats came out hot as the Red Dragons finished the day with 27 runs sweeping the Hawks 11-3 and 16-1. Two days later playing Geneseo at Cortland, the bats were not as hot as Geneseo held Oneonta scoreless in game-one, and then rallied from three-runs down to defeat the Red Dragons 9-6 in the night cap. In its final regular season games the team swept SUNYIT 11-4 and 11-0 to finish the regular season 18-14 overall and 13-7 in SUNYAC play to enter the conference tournament as the fourth seed. Oneonta opened the six-team, double elimination tournament against fifth-seeded Buffalo State. Oneonta got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third however Buffalo put four runs on the board in the top of the fourth to go ahead by three. The Red Dragons cut the lead to one with two more runs in the bottom of the inning before the Bengals added a total of five runs over the next two innings to extend their lead en route to a 9-3 victory over Oneonta. The loss sent Oneonta into the loserʼs bracket where they next faced sixth seeded Brockport. Senior Rena Finsmith (Elmsford, NY) led off the game with a double and came around to score giving Oneonta and early 1-0 lead before Brockport put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second. This time Oneonta would counter with two runs in the top of the third and added two more in the fourth and three more in the seventh good enough for a 8-2 victory. Three Red Dragons homered in the game as Finsmith, junior Amy Herba (Johnstown, NY) and freshman Jamie Llewellyn (Oneonta, NY) each went deep. Herba also picked up her first win of the tournament on the mound throwing six-innings and striking out five. The victory over Brockport kept the Red Dragons season alive and advanced them to a rematch with Buffalo State in a must-win elimination game. Once again Oneonta took the early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Freshman Shannon Egan (Hauppauge, NY) doubled with one out and moved to third on a single by Michelle Norwich (Mohawk, NY). Junior Erica Gifford (Clifton Park, NY) then cleared the bases with a triple to leftfield giving Oneonta its two run lead. Buffalo State countered with two runs in the bottom of the second to knot the game at two before Oneonta went ahead for good with a run in the third. The Red Dragons added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and junior Kacie Cunningham (New Hartford, NY) kept the Bengals off balance in one of her best outings of the season to pick up victory on the mound as

Oneonta took the 4-2 victory, ending Buffalo Stateʼs season in the process. With just three teams remaining in the tournament the Red Dragons found themselves matched against second seeded Geneseo in the final of the losers bracket. The winner of this game would move on to face top-seeded Cortland in the championship game. The Red Dragons again took the first lead of the game against Geneseo, putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. The Blue Knights took advantage of an Oneonta error and walk in the top of the second-inning to put another run on the board. The Red Dragon bats came alive in the bottom of the third when they used three hits and capitalized on two Geneseo errors to score four more runs and put the game away. Herba who had taken both losses to Geneseo earlier in the season picked up the win while only allowing one-hit and striking out three. With already one loss in the tournament Oneonta needed to defeat Cortland twice in order to claim the conference title. In the first championship game Cortland came out ready to avenge itʼs loss to Oneonta in the previous yearʼs championship game scoring early and often en route to a 8-0 six-inning victory to Oneontaʼs season.

Track and Field

The menʼs and womenʼs track and field team continued its improvement this spring on both sides with strong finishes at both the SUNYAC and ECAC meets while also scoring points at the NCAA meet. On the menʼs side a total of 14 school records were broken, 13 of which were individual school records. Leading the way was senior All-American Tom OʼNeill (New Rochelle, NY) who destroyed the previous records in all of the sprint events while qualifying for the NCAA meet provisionally in the 100, 200 and 400. Junior transfer Ryan Wells (Chittenango, NY) made an immediate impact in the mid-distance events setting school records in the 800 and 1,500 while also shattering the school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase during the SUNYAC meet after not having run the event since high school. Senior Shaun Hurley (Saratoga Springs, NY) completed his Oneonta State career with a SUNYAC championship in the triple jump while setting a school record in the process. As a team the men finished 5th at the

SUNYAC meet and 21st at the ECAC meet, both improvements from last season.

OʼNeillʼs All-American performance came in the 100 when he finished fifth overall after entering the championship as the 17th seed. He became the first male to earn All-American honors in the new era of the track and field program. The womenʼs team also saw numerous school records fall this spring as 11 school records were broken, eight of which were individual school records. The duo of junior transfer Musu Jackson-Buckner (Buffalo, NY) and senior Ashlee Robertson (Mechanicville, NY) led the way as both would go on

to earn All-American honors at the NCAA meet. Jackson-Buckner made an immediate impact on the program breaking

records in both the 100 and 200-meters in her first year as a Red Dragon. Robertson continued to show her dominance in the 400 breaking her own school record over and over again. As a team the women had its best showing ever at the SUNYAC meet finishing fourth before following that up with a 1st place finish at the ECAC meet to claim the ECAC Div. III womenʼs title. Both Jackson-Buckner and Robertson qualified for the NCAA meet in two events each as Jackson-Buckner qualified in the 100 and 200-meters while Robertson qualified in the 200 and 400-meters.

After running the fastest time in the prelims in the 200, Jackson-Buckner finished 4th in the finals of the 200-meters to earn her All-American honors. Robertson entered the finals of the 400 with the second fastest time during the prelims and finished 3rd in the finals to earn her All-American honors.

Tennis (6-5)

The menʼs tennis team overcame a number of obstacles to turn in yet another winning season. By the final match of the season the team was down to just six team members however these six pulled together to close out the year

with a five match winning streak and finish with an overall record of 6-5. The season began in Hilton Head, S.C. where the team dropped its two matches that were played while two were rained out. Junior Eric Bratt (Roslyn, NY), who also plays basketball for Oneonta, joined the team and won both of his season-opening matches at third singles on the trip. Freshman Ryan Pettus (Kingston, NY) went 1-1 on the trip, which included a loss in three sets in the opening match of the season for the Red Dragons against Elmhurst College. Oneonta dropped its first match up north against Ithaca before recording its initial win of the spring with a 5-2 decision at Scranton. The Red Dragons won two of the three doubles matches and then registered victories in four of the six singles matches. After dropping the next two matches on the road, both by scores of 4-3, Oneonta closed the season with five straight wins to finish 6-5 overall. Three of the five wins were by a score of 4-3 including the season-ending win against Hartwick. Against Hartwick the Red Dragons had a 1-0 lead after doubles play, but had to rally for the win. The clinching points for Oneonta came from sophomore Jack Eichler (Syosset, NY), junior Matt Deitch (Monroe, NY) and sophomore Jordey LaCava (Thornwood, NY) at third, fourth and fifth singles respectively. Bratt, who played at all three of the top singles spots finished his initial collegiate tennis season with a team best record of 9-2 in singles play going 2-1 at first singles, 4-1 at second singles and 3-0 at third singles. Classmate Deitch finished with an 8-3 record playing between third and fourth singles winning his final seven singles matches of the year.

Men’s Lacrosse (8-9)

The menʼs lacrosse season began with a number of new faces after graduating a large class in 2004. With no returning regular starters one of the main concerns entering the season was the lack of experience with many players in new roles, as the season got under way.

The season began with a loss on the road at Rensselaer followed by a win on the road at Scranton and a home victory over Alfred. In their fourth game of the season the team traveled to play nationally ranked Ithaca. Trailing 9-3 at the half the Red Dragons made it a game in the second half, limiting the Bombers to just one second half goal. Despite outscoring their opponent 5-1 in the second half the Red Dragons would come up short losing the game 10-8.

Through early April the Red Dragons hovered around the .500 mark before using a three game win streak at the end of the month to go two games above .500 for the first time all season. This stretch included victories over Elmira, Oswego and Plattsburgh as the team fought for a spot in the post season. A mid-season injury to starting goalie Rick Freud (Stony Brook, NY) along with numerous other injuries to starting players tested the Red Dragons depth, while also allowing freshman goalie Kyle Reich (New Hyde Park, NY) to step up and prove himself in goal.

After a 7-6 overtime loss to Geneseo in its final regular season game the Red Dragons record stood at 8-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play, qualifying them for the conference tournament as the third-seed by virtue of head-to-head tie breaker.

The Red Dragons opened the semifinal round of the conference tournament against second-seeded Geneseo on the road. Geneseo wasted no time taking the lead scoring the first four goals of the day as the Blue Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes of play. Over the final 10-minutes of the first quarter Oneonta senior Sean Sullivan (Syracuse, NY) tallied two goals of his own as the Red Dragons tried to cut the lead, however Geneseo still led 5-2 following the first quarter. Geneseo kept its lead in the second quarter going up 9-5 at the half as the Blue Knights went on to take the victory 14-8.

The teamʼs season stayed alive when they received a berth in the ECAC Upstate New York tournament. The Red Dragons traveled across town to face Hartwick in the first round of the tournament where its season officially ended with a 12-9 loss to the Hawks.

Senior Chad Wagoner (Chittenango, NY) finished the season as the team leader in both goals and points finishing with 61 points on 22 goals and 28 assists.

Women’s Lacrosse (3-11)

The womenʼs lacrosse team entered the season with high expectations after qualifying for both the SUNYAC and ECAC tournaments the previous season and returning a group that included eight seniors. It quickly became evident that things were not going to go as the Red Dragons had planned as the team was forced to wait two weeks before playing its first game due to early spring weather in upstate New York.

When the season finally got underway the Red Dragons first game ended in a heartbreaker as they fell to St. John Fisher in double overtime 19-17. Things would not get any easier as the Red Dragons dropped its next two games to nationally ranked top-15 teams, Hamilton and Stevens Institute. In their fourth game of the season the Red Dragons hosted the University of Rochester and suffered another heartbreaking loss falling 15-14, this time in sudden-victory overtime.

Following a pair of losses to Skidmore and Brockport to move its season record to 0-6, the Red Dragons were determined to try and turn things around with SUNYAC opponents Fredonia and Buffalo State

coming to town. Against Fredonia the Red Dragons took an early lead 9-5 after the first half. Each team would match their first half scoring in the second half as Oneonta picked up their first victory of the season 18-10. Sophomore Erin Maybeck (Huntington, NY) led the way for Oneonta in the victory finishing the game with five goals and two assists.

Buffalo State arrived in town the following day and the Red Dragons took the initial lead of the game before Buffalo State came back to tie the game at 2-2 less than three minutes into the game. From there it would be all Oneonta as the Red Dragons finished the first half scoring 10 straight goals to take a 12-2 lead at the break. Buffalo State attempted a comeback in the second half however their efforts would be to little to late as the Red Dragons picked up their second straight victory 18-6. Maybeck and senior Erin DeSantis (Oswego, NY) each tallied four goals to lead the Red Dragons in the win.

The Red Dragons closed out its season going 1-5 the rest of the way to finish the season 3-11. Oneontaʼs third victory of the season came against Potsdam 13-6 to help them finish its SUNYAC schedule one game under .500 with a 3-4 record in conference play.

Maybeck led the team in both goals and points finishing the season with 39 points, on 35 goals and 4 assists.

As one of the initial members of the NCAA sponsored CHAMPS/Life skills Program, Oneonta State Athletics has been Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success (CHAMPS) since 1994. Every year it is our mission to support and enhance student-athlete development initiatives as well as the quality of their experience within the college setting. There are five components with which we are committed to improve the personal development of the student-athlete outside of athletics. These include Commitment to Academic Excellence focusing on study skills, goal setting and time management, tutoring, and academic counseling. Commitment to Personal Development providing programming on nutrition, eating disorders, alcohol Choices, sexual responsibility, and interpersonal communications. Commitment to Career Development which allows student-athletes to learn information on resume building, interviewing skills, entrance and exit interviews, and post-college choices. Commitment to Service encourages our student-athletes to make contributions to the Oneonta Community by mentoring elementary students, peer education and counseling, and community service projects throughout the year. The final component to the CHAMPS module is Commitment to Athletic Excellence in which our Athletics Director works closely with Student Development to ensure that we have top quality coaching and support staff to enable each program athletic excellence within the SUNYAC conference.

Under the direction of current coordinator/SAAC advisor and volleyball coach Colleen Cashman, CHAMPS sponsored two personal development programs this past school year that all student-athletes were required to attend. On November 10, 2004, Elaine Pasqua presented her interactive program “Sex and Excess: Surviving the Party” which educated the audience on high risk behaviors such as unsafe sex, and binge drinking; and she also discussed the topic of AIDS and other STDʼs. Keith Edwards visited campus on April 21 and 22 to present his program “She Fears You” a highly sensitive topic on men ending rape which encourages men to play a significant role in ending the perpetuation of a campus rape culture. Both presentations were thought provoking and at times very funny and entertaining. The Fall 2005 program will bring Brett Sokolow to campus to present his program “What You Donʼt Know About Hazing Can Kill You.”

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) works in close conjunction with the CHAMPS program throughout the year to fulfill numerous community service projects that all athletic teams can participate in. During the Fall semester a clothing/food/supplies relief drive was sponsored for the Island of Grenada, the 2nd Annual Halloween Fun/Run walk was held to benefit Saturday s̓ Bread, a local food pantry; boxes were placed throughout the residence halls by SAAC members to benefit the Salvation Army food bank and finally each athletic team adopted 10 families to benefit children from the Migrant Workers Program for the Christmas holidays. Other community service projects that our athletic teams participated in throughout the year included the American Heart Associationʼs Heart Run/Walk, The Up and Down Hill Community Road Race, the Pit Run and the American Cancer Societyʼs Relay for Life raffle which raised $1495.00 towards cancer research. Into The Streets, held the first Saturday of May is the final team orientated community service project for the year. Teams that have participated for the past five years include wrestling, volleyball, womenʼs soccer and menʼs and womenʼs swimming and diving. Not only did most athletic teams participate in most of the previously mentioned community service projects, each team then contributed between 6-20 hours of individual team projects to the community. All in all, the Oneonta State Athletic teams donated well over 1000 hours to community service projects. In January, the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators/Jostens Community Service Awards program presented Oneonta State Athletics with the “Merit of Award” an honorable mention the SAAC sponsored relief drive to benefit victims of Hurricane Ivan on the Caribbean island of Grenada. This was the third time in four years that the Association has presented the athletes of Oneonta with an award for community service.

In an effort to increase our visibility within the community CHAMPS sponsored itʼs first Kidʼs Fun Day, where children from the community were able to interact with our college athletes in various fun activities one Sunday afternoon. Children and student-athletes could be seen running around the gym together competing in different games and competitions.

The athletics program at Oneonta is comprised of 21 varsity sports, consisting of approximately 400 athletes. Each athlete devotes as much as three hours a day during their season to practice and competition. Most are traveling each weekend to compete and time demands are at a premium. Even the best and brightest students are challenged to find time to study. Yet, for the academic school year ending 2004, the cumulative GPA of athletics was 2.85, higher than the overall college student body; 8 of our teams have over a 3.0 cumulative GPA average. Oneonta State student-athletes are a group of dedicated individuals who proudly represent not only their sports but the College at Oneonta. We hope you stay tuned for more news on the happenings of the Oneonta State CHAMPS programming and the student-athletes of our college.

DUSTIN WINN EARNS ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA HONORSWinn receives culminating Academic Honor for work in the Classroom

Former Oneonta State wrestler Dustin Winn (Bainbridge, NY/BGA) achieved the crowning honor for his academic success during his four years at the College when he was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Menʼs College Division At-Large Third Team this past June. Winn joins last December graduate, menʼs soccer player Luke Kitchen, as the only two athletes during the past year to be recognized as Academic All-Americans for their performance in the classroom. Winnʼs honor brings Oneonta Stateʼs total to five Academic All-Americans in the last six years. Winn earned the national honor for the first time after being a District 1 selection for two straight years including being a first team honoree this spring. A two-year team captain, Winn capped his collegiate wrestling career this past March with a third place finish at 157 lbs. at the Div. III National tournament, earning All-American honors in the process. Throughout his career he has been honored numerous times for his outstanding achievements in the classroom to go along with his athletic achievements. He is a three-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American and also a member of the National College Athlete Honor Society of Chi Alpha Sigma. At this yearʼs Athletic Awards banquet he was chosen as the Oneonta State Male Athlete of the Year for a second time during his career. Winn leaves Oneonta as the all-time career wins leader after becoming the first grappler to eclipse 100 career wins. The Academic All-America program is sponsored by ESPN The Magazine and the national team is selected by the CoSIDA Board and members of the Academic All-America Committee, which amounts to just over 100 total voters. To be eligible for nomination, the student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 GPA and be a starter or significant contributor to their team.

LOPICCOLO SELECTED AS ATLANTIC REGION

COACH OF THE YEAR

Following their best showing at the SUNYAC championship meet in its three years of existence head track and field coach Matt LoPiccolo was named the 2005 Division III Atlantic Region Womenʼs Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the year.

LoPiccolo, who is in his fifth year of coaching at Oneonta, led the womenʼs outdoor track and field team to a fourth place finish at the SUNYAC Championships while capturing the ECAC Div. III championship this spring. The womenʼs team had two individuals qualify, and earn, All-American honors while finishing tied for 22nd at the NCAA championship meet.

This past winter LoPiccolo was selected as the SUNYAC menʼs indoor track & field Coach of the Year after his squad finished third overall, an improvement of four places from their seventh place finish in 2004.

This year, between the indoor and outdoor seasons his female athletes captured nine SUNYAC championships and three ECAC titles.
