The Oneonta State fall teams would continue the success of recent years as the fall came to a close with both team and individual champions. The womenʼs soccer team would win their sixth straight conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight. In field hockey, Oneonta State would win their first state title in over twenty-five years while earning their second straight ECAC berth. The womenʼs tennis team would produce a SUNYAC champion for the first time in three years. The fall would conclude with a trio of athletes earning All-Americans honors.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (21-2-1)

The womenʼs soccer team opened the season with the target on their backs. As the defending National Champions the Red Dragons began the season as the pre-season number one and the team to beat. Despite losing five starters to graduation the experience of having won a national title made the returning players hungry for another as they began their quest for a second title. The season would begin on the road with a 2-0 victory at Scranton. The victory would prove to be much less dramatic than the last time the Red Dragons faced Scranton when senior Brooke Davis (Grand Gorge, NY/Stamford) scored in double overtime to advance Oneonta in the quarterfinals of the 2003 NCAA tournament. This year Davis would once again score tallying the first goal of the game and what would turn out to be the game-winning goal en route to the victory.

Oneonta would open their home schedule with the 2004 Red Dragon Cup. Their first opponent of the tournament Ohio Wesleyan, created a match-up between the last two Div. III womenʼs soccer national champions, as prior to Oneontaʼs championship in 2003 Ohio Wesleyan had won back to back titles in 2001 and 2002. Despite holding the overall edge in play the Red Dragons were unable to capitalize as Ohio Wesleyan prevailed 2-1 giving the Red Dragons their first loss of the season. The next day Oneonta would battle William Smith to a 1-1 draw to move their season record to 1-1-1 before going on a 20 game win streak. The streak would begin in the Mayorʼs Cup with a 3-0 shutout of Virginia Wesleyan and a 9-0 shutout of Muskingum as

they captured the cup title. Oneonta sophomore Patricia DiMichele (Centereach, NY/Centereach) was named the tournament offensive MVP after finishing the tournament with two goals and four assists to lead the Red Dragons on the weekend. Throughout the remaining part of September and the month of October the team would put together a 14 game winning streak that included a sweep of the SUNYAC regular season while outscoring SUNYAC opponents 33-2. The sweep of conference opponents extended the teams conference unbeaten streak to 70 games. In the final regular season game Oneonta traveled to face previously unbeaten Hamilton College. In the much anticipated match-up the Red Dragons would score the first four goals of the game with sophomore Leslie Small (Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa) tallying the final two as Oneonta handed Hamilton their first loss of the season with a 4-2 win. In the SUNYAC tournament it would be freshman Mary Velan (Stamford, NY/Stamford) who would lead the Red Dragons to their sixth straight conference title and into the NCAA tournament. In their two tournament wins Velan would score the opening goal in both games, including three goals in their first game as the Red Dragons defeated Geneseo 5-0 to open the tournament before defeating Cortland 3-0 in the championship game. Oneonta dominated their opponents in both games of the tournament finishing with a 42-8 shot advantage. The two wins on the weekend also moved their conference unbeaten streak to 72 games which ties the NCAA Div. III record held by Wisconsin Stevens Point. Oneonta received a first round bye and opened the NCAA tournament hosting Ithaca in an NCAA second round game. The Red Dragons had beaten Ithaca earlier in the season 2-0, however the second match-up would not come as easy. Oneonta would carry the play for the majority of game but was unable to break the Ithaca defense as regulation play would end in a scoreless tie. In the 99th minute of play Oneonta would be awarded a restart after a foul was called against Ithaca. Junior sweeper Colleen Wolbet (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) put the ball into play serving it into the box where it would become loose in front of Velan who wasted no time sending a

shot into the lower right corner of the goal to end the game. Oneonta next found itself in the NCAA sectional round of play, which they hosted. The three other teams that would come to Oneonta for the sectional were Hamilton College, Middlebury College and Wheaton College of Massachusetts who entered the weekend undefeated.

Oneonta would open sectional play against Hamilton whom they had defeated earlier in the season by a score of 4-2. On this day the Red Dragons would once again get on the board first taking a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the game when senior Trish Jaeger (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) was able to get her head on a ball and put it by an outstretched Hamilton keeper for the lead. Hamilton would tie the score just four minutes into the second half when they were able to convert a goal off of a rebound to make the score 1-1. Like the

previous weekend against Ithaca, Velan would once again come through for Oneonta with the game-wining goal. The goal came after three straight corners produced no opportunities for the Red Dragons. Jaeger controlled the ball at midfield before sending pass ahead to Velan who dribbled it once to her right and blasted a shot over the keeperʼs head and into the upper left corner of the goal for the win. In the sectional championship game Oneonta found themselves matched up against Wheaton College who had defeated Middlebury the day before to remain undefeated. The Red Dragons had only faced Wheaton once prior to the match up where they had fallen 3-2 at Wheaton two years ago. On this day neither Oneonta nor Wheaton were able to capitalize on their chances in first half as the teams entered the half in a scoreless tie. Wheaton gave Oneonta keeper Laura Morcone (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) her toughest test of the year as she registered six saves in the first half alone. In the second half Wheaton would come out firing as they wasted no time converting the first goal of the game just 1:33 into the half to take the lead. They would strike again just five minutes later to take a 2-0 lead before scoring the final goal of the game in the 68th minute for a 3-0 win ending Oneontaʼs season and shot at defending their national championship. Oneonta finished the season 21-2-1 tying their school record for wins in a season set by last yearʼs team en route to the national championship.

FIELD HOCKEY (15-6)

The field hockey team completed a second straight 15-win season while earning their second straight ECAC tournament bid and capturing the NYSWCAA title as they completed one of their best seasons in recent years. Aside from capturing the teams success, senior Meghan Donnelly (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) was named a third team National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-American and the SUNYAC Player of the year while head coach Michele Dombrowski was named the SUNYAC coach of the year.

The season started with wins over St. Lawrence and Southern Maine at the St. Lawrence tournament. The Red Dragons would return home and pick up a victory over Elmira in their home opener before suffering their first loss of the season on the road at Manhattanville. Oneonta would close out the month of September with five straight wins including three straight over SUNYAC opponents. In the final victory of the month the Red Dragons would pick up a 2-1 home victory over 13th ranked Skidmore to finish the month 8-1 overall.

The month of October started off slow as it started with three straight losses on the road. After falling at Brockport 0-1, the Red Dragons would travel to face 5th ranked Cortland in a key SUNYAC match-up. The Oneonta defense would hold Cortland scoreless for the majority of the first half before Cortland scored with two minutes left in the half to take the lead at halftime. Cortland would add two more goals in the second half to take the win 3-0 and clinch the SUNYAC title. During the month of October the Red Dragons would face three more ranked opponents picking up a 2-1 victory over 17th ranked Ithaca and forcing overtime with 8th

ranked Hartwick to finish the month 5-4 overall.November would start with Oneonta playing host to

the NYSWCAA tournament. The Red Dragons would open the tournament with a 3-2 overtime victory against New Paltz. Junior Kerry Birnstill (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) netted the game-winning goal for Oneonta in the win. The following day Oneonta faced Ithaca with the NYSWCAA title on the line. The game would remain scoreless through the first half before Birnstill got the Red Dragons on the board with a goal just over two minutes into the second half. Ithaca would tie the game with less than five minutes remaining before Oneonta senior Brynne Hoover (Walton, NY/Walton) found the back of the next with 43 second remaining in regulation play to give the Red Dragons the title.

Oneonta would wrap up their season in the ECAC tournament where they were defeated in the first round by Utica 2-1 to end the season.

MEN’S SOCCER (6-10-2)

The 2004 season was a season of ups and downs for the menʼs soccer team. After graduating nine players from last yearʼs team, the season opened with a roster of many new faces. Gone were Jme Amoako and Jack Potter both first team regional All-Americans a year ago, this year would prove to be a rebuilding year of sorts as the opening day roster consisted of just two regular starters from last year. The season began with the Red Dragons dropping their first game on the road at Albany. The team would then return home to pick up their first win of the season with a 2-0 defeat of Siena. In the Mayors Cup tournament at Hartwick the Red Dragons earned a split of their two games. They were shutout in their opener by Ohio State before they rallied to take a 1-0 win in overtime against Fordam on the final day. This would begin a win-loss pattern that would carry throughout the month of September as the team finished the month 4-5 overall.

The month of October would not get any easier for the Red Dragons. After opening the month with a home loss to Marist the Red Dragons would travel to Florida to open their Atlantic Soccer Conference schedule against Florida International University. Oneonta would fall to FIU and Florida Atlantic before returning home still looking for their first victory of the month. During the second half of the month the Red Dragons would pick up back-to-back ties against conference opponents Adelphi and Philadelphia before dropping a game at home

against Colgate. They would then close out the month with a 2-1 overtime victory at Iona to finish the month 1-4-2. With the season winding down in November the Red Dragons would battle nationally ranked Hartwick to a 1-1 tie through regulation play before falling in overtime 2-1. Oneonta would then close out the season with a conference win over Howard to finish the season with a record of 6-10-2. Despite their overall record the Red Dragons got a glimpse of what the future might hold with freshman goalie Timothy Melia (Great River, NY/East Islip) turning in an outstanding rookie campaign. Melia started and played every minute in goal for Oneonta this fall finishing the season with a 1.11 goals against average. The Red Dragons also saw two players earn regional All-American honors as senior Luke Kitchen (Stroud, England/Marling School) and Chris Spence (N. Miami Beach, FL/N. Miami Beach) were selected to the regional second and third teams respectively.

CROSS COUNTRY

The menʼs and womenʼs cross country teams would enter the 2004 season with a large nucleus of runners returning from a year ago. Both teams would perform well throughout the season, with the womenʼs team winning the Hartwick Invitational and turning in their highest finish in recent years at the NCAA Atlantic regional. The menʼs team entered the season with 14 returnees while the women returned 11. Both the men and the women would get contributions from their newcomers as a trio of transfers would make

an impact on the menʼs side while a couple of freshman would step up and look to contribute on the womenʼs side. The season opened at the Brockport Kick-Off Classic with both teams getting a preview of the course that would be ran at the conference championships later in the season. The Red Dragons would then return home for the next two weeks competing in the Hartwick Invitational and hosting the Oneonta

State Airfield Invitational. At the Hartwick Invitational the womenʼs team would prove victorious, as they would capture both the team title and the individual title. Sophomore Kaitlin OʼSullivan (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) was the top runner on the day for the women as she captured the overall title. Both teams would be challenged at their own invitational the following weekend as the biggest challenge came from the rains of Hurricane Ivan that flooded many parts of the Oneonta Airfield course. Throughout the first three

meets junior transfer Ryan Walter (Delanson, NY/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) would emerge as the top runner on the menʼs side as he would lead Oneonta in all three meets while finishing second overall at the Hartwick Invitational. Both teams would continue to improve throughout the month of October as they prepared for both the SUNYAC conference meet and the NCAA regional meet with many runners improving on their personal records. The men would have their best finish of the season at the Hamilton Invitational where they finished fifth out of ten complete teams. The month would conclude with the conference meet where the women finished sixth overall while the men finished seventh. Senior Kim Davey (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) would lead the women for the first time all year as she ran the race of her life finishing 34th overall. Walter would continue to be the top runner on the menʼs side as he finished the conference meet with a 24th place overall finish. The season would wrap up in November with both teams competing at the ECAC championships and the NCAA Atlantic Regional meet. At the ECAC meet the women would finish eighth out of 24 teams and were led by OʼSullivan who set a school record for 6,000 meters in finishing 30th overall. Walter would earn All-ECAC honors finishing 12th overall and leading the men to a ninth place finish out of 34 teams. The following weekend at the NCAA Atlantic Regional, Oneonta State would see two-school records fall, as OʼSullivan would top her mark set the week before while Walter would run his best race of the season and set a new school record for 8,000 meters. OʼSullivan would finish 53rd overall on the womenʼs side as the women finished 15th overall for their highest placing at regionals in recent years. Davey would break into the top 100 improving on her SUNYAC race and finishing 96th overall in the best race of her career. Led by Walterʼs 43rd place finish the men would finish 19th overall as a team.

VOLLEYBALL (23-19)

The 2004 volleyball team would begin the season with their sights set on getting back to the conference tournament after falling in the conference championship game last season. The team would welcome one of the largest first year classes in recent years, as eight of the 15-team members were first year players. This years schedule would include a trip to Wisconsin to participate in the Wisconsin-Superior tournament along with trips to both the NYSWCAA and SUNYAC tournaments.

The season would begin with Oneonta playing host to the Red Dragon Invitational. Oneonta would begin the tournament with wins over Russell Sage and Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham on day one before defeating Hartwick 3-0 to open the second day of the tournament and advance to the championship match. Senior Cassandra Auth (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport) and junior Jill Meehan (Albany, NY/Guilderland) were selected to the All-

Tournament Team.The Red Dragons would win four of

their next nine matches before closing out the month of September at the first weekend of SUNYAC pool play hosted by Cortland. Oneonta would go 4-1 on the weekend with their only loss coming to Cortland as they remained in contention for the SUNYAC East crown.

The month of October would start with Oneonta playing host to the Oneonta State Invitational. Oneonta would drop their first match of the tournament before winning three straight to capture first place in the gold bracket. The Red Dragons would then head west as they traveled to compete in the Wisconsin-Superior tournament where they finished second. The month would conclude with Oneonta hosting the second weekend of SUNYAC pool play. Oneonta would get off to a tough start on day one falling to Cortland and New Paltz in their first two matches of the tournament. On day two the Red Dragons would bounce back with three wins to finish 7-3 overall in pool play for the season and qualify for the SUNYAC tournament.

Over the final two weeks of the season Oneonta would go 1-4 including a 0-2 showing at the NYSWCAA tournament hosted by Cortland during the last weekend of October. At the conference tournament the Red Dragons would defeat Fredonia on day one before falling to Cortland in four games on day two to end their season. Senior Krysta Bradford (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley-Slatehill) was selected to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team.

WOMEN’S TENNIS (3-6)

The womenʼs tennis team began their 2004 season with a new coach for the second time in two years. The team returned just four players from a year ago but saw the addition of four new faces along with the return of senior Libby Kent (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) who won a SUNYAC title at second singles as a freshman before taking two years off. Despite all the changes the team showed promise for the future as the team produced an individual conference champion along with improving on their overall finish at the SUNYAC championships from a year ago. The season began on the road at Russell Sage where Oneonta picked up a 9-0 victory. The team would then drop five straight matches, falling to SUNYAC opponents New Paltz, Cortland and Geneseo along with non-conference opponents Hartwick and Union. During the stretch Kent showed that she could pick up right where she left off as a freshman while going 5-0 at first singles to remain undefeated on the season.

During the last weekend of September Kent and sophomore Nicole Lindell (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) would compete in the ITA Northeast Championships. Kent would enter the tournament

ranked fifth and would win her first two matches in straight sets before dropping her first singles match of the year as she fell in straight sets in the quarterfinal round. Lindell would open the tournament falling in straight sets in the first round to move into the consolation bracket. In the consolation bracket Lindell would advance to the semifinal round before dropping a match to the eventual consolation bracket winner. Kent and Lindell then paired up for doubles where they went 1-2 on the weekend. The duo would drop their first match of the championship round before bouncing

back to win their first match in the consolation bracket where they were eliminated in the quarterfinal round of play.

The team would close out the remaining dual portion of their schedule going 2-1, picking up a victory over Oswego at home before dropping their final home match of the season to Ithaca. In the final dual match of the season the team would travel to Elmira and come away with a 5-4 victory to finish their dual season with a record of 3-6.

In the SUNYAC championships Lindell would prove to be the underdog as she emerged from the fourth seed to win the title at second singles. Kent would also advance to the championship round where she would fall to finish as runner up at first singles. Both Lindell and Kent were named to the All-Conference Team earning first and second team honors respectively.

DEANNA PARKS TAKES OVER AS SOFTBALL COACH

Oneonta State Director of Athletics, Steve Garner, announced on August 5th that former University of Akron head softball coach, Deanna Parks, has been named the new head coach of the softball team. Parks inherits a team that won the SUNYAC tournament and made an NCAA appearance in 2004. She replaces Denise Marchese who resigned in July to take an assistant coaching position at Central Connecticut State University. “We are extremely pleased to welcome Deanna to our coaching staff,” said Garner. “This position attracted an outstanding pool of applicants, many of whom had tremendous experience, and the committee felt that Deanna would be a better fit to take over our highly successful softball program at this time.” Parks comes to Oneonta after eight seasons at the University of Akron where she guided the program to a record of 224-179-2 overall including a 119-80-1 mark in the Mid-American Conference. This past spring the Zips finished 26-25 overall and failed to qualify for the MAC tournament for a second straight season. “Iʼm looking forward to joining Oneonta State,” said Parks. “I know that the softball program has a winning tradition and Iʼm looking forward to keeping that tradition going while aiming even higher. I am excited to be able to work with the returning players and helping them reach their goal of making it to the college world series.” Parks took over the softball program at Akron in 1996 after three seasons at Salisbury (Md.) State. In her first season with the Zips she led the team to a 29-22 record and an appearance in the MAC tournament. Akron, which won 30 or more games three times during Parks ̓tenure, made a total of five MAC tournament and won two regular

season titles in 1998 and 2002. The Zips played in one MAC tournament championship game in 2002, but fell to Central Michigan to finish 30-17. At Akron, Parks ̓squads were consistently recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for academic excellence. The Zips

had 19 Academic All-MAC selections including seven in 2002 in Parks ̓time at Akron.While at Salisbury (Md.) State University Parks compiled a 60-43 mark over three seasons while winning a Capital Athletic Conference

championship in 1995. That year, the Sea Gulls won a then-school-record 25 games with Parks being named conference coach of the year. She also compiled a 69-55 mark as womenʼs volleyball coach.

Parks is a 1988 graduate of Kent State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in journalism while starring for the Golden Flashes softball team. A first-team All-Mideast Region player in 1986 and All-MAC selection in 1987, Parks still holds the KSU records for career bases on balls (79) and triples in a season (eight in 1985). She earned a Master of Arts degree in sport administration in 1995 from KSU and was inducted into the Universityʼs Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.

Parks, who will also serve as the Director of Campus Recreation as part of her job responsibilities at Oneonta, also spent one season (1992-93) as an assistant coach at Penn State, following a four-year tenure as an assistant at her alma mater, Kent State.

MEGAN DONNELLY EARNS ALL-AMERICAN HONORS IN FIELD HOCKEY

Senior Meghan Donnelly (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) was honored this fall by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association as a Third Team All-American. This season the Red Dragons finished 15-7 overall, won the NYSWCAA tournament and qualified for the ECAC tournament for a second straight year. Donnelly earns All-America honors as a fitting conclusion to an outstanding season and career with the Red Dragons. During her career she was a two-time regional All-American including being a first team selection this fall. Earlier this fall she was also named the

SUNYAC Player of the Year while being a first team All-State honoree. She finished her senior season having started all 22 games as a defender while tallying one goal and a career high five assists. In her four-year career she started and played in all 79 games while compiling one goal and 12 assists. Donnelly is the fifth field hockey player in the history of the program to be selected as an All-American and the second in the past two years.

JILL MEEHAN EARNS ALL-AMERICAN HONORS IN VOLLEYBALL

Junior Jill Meehan (Albany, NY/Guilderland) was selected as an honorable mention 2004 Division III All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. This fall she led the Red Dragons into the SUNYAC tournament where they finished the season with a 23-19 overall record.

Meehan earns her honor after being selected as a first team New York Regional All-American earlier this fall. This season she played in 41 of the Red Dragons 42 matches and led the team in both kills and blocks with 2.9 kills per game and 126 blocks on the season. She finished second on the team with 60 serving aces and registered 310 digs on the season. Earlier this fall she earned honors from the SUNYAC being named to the SUNYAC All-Conference East Division first team and also earned honors from the New York State Womenʼs Collegiate Athletic Association as an honorable mention All-State selection.

MARY VELAN EARNS ALL-AMERICAN HONORS IN SOCCER

Freshman Mary Velan (Stamford, NY/Stamford) was selected as a Division III All-American in womenʼs soccer. She was selected as an NSCAA third team All-American and becomes the first player in the history of the Oneonta State womenʼs soccer program to earn All-American honors as a freshman. Velanʼs All-American honors come after her outstanding rookie campaign in which she led the team in both goals (16) and points (38) along with being named the SUNYAC Rookie of the year. She became eligible for selection to the national All-American team after earning first team regional All-American honors. One of three freshmen selected to the national All-American team, Velan had the greatest first year ever for the Oneonta Sate womenʼs soccer program. Her 38 points on 16 goals and six assists are both a freshman record and tied for the second best season total of all time. Her 16

goals are also tied for the third best season total of all time. Velan is the fourth womanʼs soccer player in the history of the program to be selected as an All-American and her selection marks the fifth straight year in which Oneonta has had a national All-American.

The ESPN The Magazine 2004 Academic All-American Teams for menʼs soccer were announced in November and Oneonta State senior Luke Kitchen (Stroud, England/Marling School) was among those named to University Division second team for menʼs soccer, recognizing his outstanding accomplishments in the classroom. His Academic All-American honors came after he was named to the District 1 First team, which made him

eligible to appear on the national ballot. Kitchenʼs Academic All-American honor marks the third major academic honor he has received this fall. Earlier this fall he was named the recipient of the 2004 Dr. Sam Molnar Award which is the highest academic award that can be given to a male athlete in the SUNYAC. He was also a third team NSCAA/adidas Scholar-Athlete All-American this fall.

Over his four years at Oneonta Kitchen been a continuing honoree for the SUNYAC Commissionerʼs List and All-Academic Team along with being selected in each of the past two years as one of the collegeʼs “Best and Brightest.” Last year he was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student Honor Society, while being selected by the coaches as the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Kitchen was a co-captain of the menʼs soccer team this fall and has started every game for Oneonta as a defender since his arrival in 2001. This season he was named an Atlantic Soccer Conference Second Team All-Conference selection and was also a second team New York Regional All-American.

Patricia Jaeger Earns District 1 Academic All-American Honors

When the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 1 Teams were announced for women’s soccer, Oneonta State senior Patricia Jaeger (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) was among those honored with a Third Team selec-tion for her outstanding accom-plishments off the playing field. The honor for Jaeger marks the first time she has been selected to the All-District team. This season Jaeger helped lead the Red Dragons to their sixth straight SUNYAC title and berth in NCAA

Div. III tournament where they advanced to the elite eight be-fore falling to Wheaton College of Massachusetts. A member of the 2003 National Championship team she has started 70 of 72 game over her career and has registered 14 goals and 8 assists as a defender.
