The spring season for Oneonta was the best ever with five teams going to the postseason including three in the ECAC and two in the NCAA. When it was all said and done the baseball team was co-champions of the ECAC for a second straight year and the softball team finished third in the five-team NCAA Northeast regional tournament. The menʼs and womenʼs lacrosse teams both were eliminated from the ECAC tournament with first-round losses. The womenʼs track & field team had two individuals compete at the national championship meet where they had one ninth place finish and a 12th place finish.

Softball

The 2004 softball team began its season with its annual journey south to Ft. Myers, Fla. where they had a challenging 12-game schedule. The Red Dragons managed to finish the trip with a 6-6 record including a four-game win streak in the middle of the trip. One highlight from the trip included 10 games where the team registered 10 hits or more including 15 in an 11-10 win against Bethel. Another highlight was sophomore Amy Herba (Johnstown, NY) throwing a one-hit shutout against Hendrix. When the team came back up north all they did was win its first six games to raise its record to 12-6. Herba, who would be the ace of the staff all season, started the streak with an eight inning, no-hitter against New Paltz on the road. A second key win during the streak was a 6-5 win against SUNYIT in 10 innings at home. The Red Dragons hit a minor bump in the road during the early and middle part of April with five losses in six games all in the SUNYAC and all on the road. The six-game trip started with a pair of losses to Buffalo State and continued with a split with Fredonia before finishing with two setbacks to Geneseo. Two of the losses cam in the late innings where Oneonta had the lead, but couldnʼt hold on. The first game against Buffalo ended 7-6 after the Red Dragons led 5-0 after three innings. The second tough loss came in the second game against Geneseo 3-2 in eight innings. In this game Oneonta carried a 2-1 lead into the seventh before the hosts tied the game in their final at bat to force the extra frame where they scored the winning run. Oneonta was able to recover a bit winning nine of its final 12 games to finish the regular season at 22-14. During this stretch the Red Dragons went to the wire before clinching its playoff spot in the conference with a doubleheader sweep of Oswego after splitting with Cortland two days prior. In the split against Cortland Herba struck out five and scattered six hits in leading Oneonta to the win over its rivals who were ranked seventh nationally at the time. It was now on to the SUNYAC tournament where Oneonta was seeded fifth in the six-team, double elimination championship. The Red Dragons first opponent was Buffalo State who had swept them earlier in the year. Three runs in the top of the eighth inning and a six-strikeout performance by Herba gave Oneonta the upset win and some rest.

With the win Oneonta didnʼt have to play until the next day and their opponent would be Fredonia. This game would go 12 innings before Oneonta emerged victorious 2-1 behind five strong innings of relief by Herba in recording her second win of the tournament. The game-winning run was knocked in by sophomore Michelle Norwich

(Mohawk, NY) who hit a two-out single to drive in junior Rena Finsmith (Elmsford, NY).

On the third and final day Oneonta would have to play 30 innings of softball to capture the title. The first game of the day was a 16-inning marathon, which the Red Dragons eliminated Buffalo State 1-0. Herba went the distance and classmate Erica Gifford (Clifton Park, NY) came through with a one-out double to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the 16th inning.

Oneonta then had to get by its rival Red Dragons of Cortland in order to win the championship. In the first game Oneonta had nothing left in the tank and were beaten 7-0, which set up the decisive game. In the final game a five-run third for Oneonta proved to be the

difference in a 5-2 clinching victory. Herba came back to pitch all seven innings in collecting her fourth win of the tournament. Gifford collected two hits and an RBI while senior Amanda LaPolla (New Hartford, NY) also had two hits including a double and a run scored.

Oneontaʼs title earned them the fourth seed in the five-team Northeast region tournament hosted by Ithaca. The Red Dragons were matched against the fifth-seeded US Merchant Marine Academy in the opening game. Herba was the story again pitching a four-hit shutout with six strikeouts in a 4-0 win for Oneonta. Finsmith and Norwich each had two hits in leading the offense.

In the second game of the first day Oneonta had to play the top-seeded Western New England Golden Bears who entered with a 33-9 record. Herba once again was masterful in shutting down the opponent en route to throwing a five-hit shutout. The Red Dragons scored the only run it would need in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by senior Kathy Caito (Geneva, NY). She drove in sophomore Sarah Place (Binghamton, NY) who hit a one-out double to right centerfield.

Unfortunately the run for Oneonta would end on the second day with losses to Cortland and Ithaca. In the first game Herba showed she was human as she was touched up for seven runs and seven hits in four innings of work. Finsmith, Place and Gifford all had two hits each, but it wasnʼt enough in the 8-4 defeat. In the second game Oneonta went extra innings before falling to the Bombers 2-1 in eight innings. The Red Dragons managed only five hits in the loss and were unable to hold its 1-0 lead.

Baseball

The baseball team had another winning season en route to being crowned ECAC Upstate Co-Champions for a second straight year. The Red Dragons completed a 23-15 season while qualifying for the ECAC tournament for the seventh time in the last eight years. The baseball team opened its season winning seven of its 10 games in Florida including a couple of three-game winning streaks. Oneonta scored a total of 90 runs on the trip and pitchers Josh Gransbury (Walton, NY) and Ryan Marsh (Elmira, NY) each won two games. The first week of the northern schedule saw Oneonta win three of five including a 3-2 win over eventual SUNYAC champion Brockport in 10 innings. Junior Brent Tortarella (Staalsburg, NY) single-handedly led the Red Dragons to victory with a 4-for-5

performance including a leadoff, walk off homerun in the bottom of the tenth inning. Sophomore Mike Schellinger (Jamesville, NY) pitched five innings in relief allowing just three hits and striking out six in recording the win. Oneonta then had a week off before getting back into action due to weather and field conditions. During the next nine-game stretch Oneonta won only four games as they fell to 14-10 overall, but worse than that was their standing in the conference. The teamʼs 4-4 record in the

SUNYAC had them on the outside of the playoff picture with only six games remaining. During the final two weeks of the season Oneonta was able to put themselves in the SUNYAC tournament going 4-2 including a key win against nationally ranked Cortland on the road. In the conference tournament the Red Dragons were eliminated on the second day by Brockport who handed Oneonta both of its losses. The Red Dragons lost 6-2 in its opening game to Brockport then bounced back 11-1 against Plattsburgh before falling once again to the Golden Eagles 4-1. In the rout against Plattsburgh, Oneonta pounded out 17 hits including three each from Tortarella, and juniors Greg Sulz (Latham, NY) and Jamie Wright (Lansing, NY). Despite being eliminated in the conference tournament Oneonta was seeded second in the four-team ECAC tournament. They hosted and defeated SUNYIT in the tournament opener 8-1 taking advantage of eight Wildcat errors. Tortarella was 2-for-4 including a homerun while senior John Schofield (Endicott, NY) won his final start of his career pitching five strong innings. Unfortunately the ECAC championship game that was scheduled the next day at St. John Fisher was rained out, which meant that the two teams would have to share the

title for 2004.

Men’s Lacrosse

The 2004 menʼs lacrosse team finished 9-8 overall while competing in the ECAC tournament for the fifth time. The Red Dragons qualified for the conference tournament where they fell to eventual champion Geneseo in the semifinals. The story of the 2004 season was quick starts followed by second half collapses. The Red Dragons came out of the gates 1-3, which included a season-opening win against Rensselaer who was nationally ranked in the preseason poll. In Oneontaʼs three losses they were outscored 13-6 in the second half including 8-0 in the fourth quarter. The Red Dragons needed to play the full 60 minutes if they were going to salvage its season. Game number five on the schedule was exactly what Oneonta needed to right the ship. A 17-4 win against Scranton cured some ills initially as the Red Dragons were able to register goals in all four quarters including seven in the second half. Senior Dan Bakke (Floral Park, NY) and junior Chad Waggoner (Chittenango, NY) led the offense with five points each. In the following game Oneonta took a 14-8 win against US Merchant Marine as they got two goals and three assists from senior Dave Coughlin (Latham, NY). After a tough 8-7 loss to Hamilton in which the visitors came-from-behind, the Red Dragons ran off four straight wins to get to 7-4. Two of the wins were lopsided while two of the wins were hard fought conference victories. In wins against SUNYIT and St. John Fisher the Red Dragons tallied a combined 39 goals while allowing only four. Oneonta finished the regular season with a split of its four remaining conference games to settle into the third seed for the tournament. The Red Dragons were able to sandwich its wins against Oswego and Plattsburgh between its losses to Cortland and Geneseo. Oneontaʼs season ended in the ECAC Upstate tournament with a 10-7 loss to cross-city rival Hartwick at home. A five-goal second quarter by the visitors broke open a 1-1 game and essentially put the game out of reach for the hosts.

Women’s Lacrosse

The womenʼs lacrosse team put together its third straight double-digit win season along with qualifying for the ECAC Mid-Atlantic tournament for the first time since 1998. The Red Dragons have made tremendous improvements during the last three seasons while upgrading its schedule to include traditional NCAA teams within the region. The Red Dragons opened its 2004 season in tropical style

with a pair of games in St. Croix. Oneonta opened its season with a 9-2 win against Sweet Briar College before falling to preseason nationally ranked Mary Washington 16-6. Freshman Erin Maybeck (Huntington, NY) made her first impression with four goals and two assists to lead the way offensively. Oneonta returned to New York and ran off five straight wins including a 17-2 win against Hartwick and a 22-10 victory over Brockport to start the SUNYAC schedule. Maybeck continued to contribute on the offensive end while getting

help from sophomore Jenn Long (Cicero, NY) who tallied 16 goals during the winning streak. Oneonta dropped two straight before winning its next three to enter its showdown with Cortland with a record of 9-3. If Oneonta were able to knock off the defending SUNYAC champion it would create a three-way tie at the top of the standings. Oneonta battled well and trailed 6-5 at halftime and tied the game at 7-7 early in the second half before the hosts ran off eight unanswered goals. Oneonta never

recovered from the onslaught as they dropped a 21-13 decision. The Red Dragons season closed with three consecutive losses including a semifinal loss to Geneseo in the conference tournament and an 18-8 loss to Drew University in the ECAC quarterfinals. In the losses to both Geneseo and Drew the Red Dragons fell behind early and couldnʼt get back to even.

Outdoor Track & Field

The menʼs and womenʼs track & field teams continued their improvement in 2004 as both teams moved up in the SUNYAC championship meet while having two more individuals qualify for the NCAA championship meet. Many records fell on both sides of the ledger with many newcomers making their mark as first-year participants. On the menʼs side 12 school records were broken overall including 10 individual school records. The big record-breaker this spring was sophomore transfer Art Driscoll (Saugerties, NY) who set individual records in the 100, 200 and 400 meters while running the anchor for the 400 and 1,600-meter relays. Driscoll was also the top-scorer at the SUNYAC meet bringing home medals in the 200 and 400 along with the two relays. The womenʼs record board continued to be re-written by

senior Kelly Stevens (Rochester, NY) and junior Ashlee Robertson (Mechanicville, NY). The two combined to break five of the 13 individual records this spring while each being a part of one relay that set two more records. Stevens broke her own records in the 800 and 1,500 meters while setting the record in the 3,000-meter run. She doubled up at the SUNYAC meet and won the 800 and 1,500 while picking up a third medal in the 1,600 relay. Robertson reset her own records in the 100, 200 and

400 and was a SUNYAC champion in the latter. Robertson and Stevens were both able to reach provisional qualifying times for the NCAA meet in the 400 and 800 respectively. Robertson just barely missed being an All-American by 1/100 of a second as she finished ninth in her event. Stevens finished 12th in her event at the championships in a time of 2:14.65.

Men’s Tennis

The menʼs tennis team had another winning year overall between its fall and spring schedule. The highlight of the fall season was a semifinal appearance at the Omni Hotels/ITA championships by the sophomore duo of Lucas Coene (Binghamton, NY) and Shaun Goodman (Morganville, NJ). The two were seeded seventh and upset the No. 2 seeded pair from Drew in the quarterfinals before falling to the third-seeded duo from Hobart College. In singles play, Coene was able to advance into the round of 16 before losing to the No. 6 seed from Drew University in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

The spring season was all about dual matches where the Red Dragons came out ahead with a 6-4 record overall. Leading the way was Coene senior Patrick OʼToole (Liverpool, NY) who both registered identical records of 9-1 in singles play and 6-4 in doubles. Goodman was a perfect 9-0 in singles play during the spring and 5-4 in doubles.

VINCENT MEDICI TAKES OVER MEN’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM

At a news conference held on Wednesday, May 12 in the skybox of the Alumni Field House, Vincent Medici was announced as the new head menʼs basketball coach. Medici replaces Paul Clune who was not renewed as head coach at the conclusion of the 2003-04 season. “We are excited to welcome Vincent to our college,” said Garner. “We are looking forward to seeing Vincent rebuild and rejuvenate our menʼs basketball program. He is a top notch coach and we are fortunate to have him working for us.” Medici comes to Oneonta after having spent the last nine years at the helm of the men s̓ basketball program at Hudson Valley Community College. During his tenure he amassed a 166-84 record while leading his squads to nine consecutive NJCAA Region III Tournaments. His teams appeared in three regional championship games and captured the 1998-99 title and participated in the national tournament. His teams also won two Mountain Valley Conference championships and he was selected as the Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the 1999-2000 season. Medici has also earned District I Coach of the Year honors at the end of the 1998-99 season. “My goal has always been to be a full time college basketball head coach,” said Medici. “Oneonta is an outstanding school and has excellent facilities and a very supportive administration. I see no reason why our men s̓ basketball program cannot compete at the highest level within the SUNYAC and the region. My goal is to make this program successful in every aspect and to make the college proud of us.”

Medici was an assistant coach at Sage Junior College of Albany prior to taking over the head coaching duties at HVCC. He spent 17 years as a physical education teacher at Greenwich Elementary School and has worked various basketball camps during his summers. Medici is a 1987 graduate of Cortland where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. He received a Master of Science degree in health education from Russell Sage College in 1994. Medici currently resides in Latham, N.Y. with his wife, Ann and their three children. He will begin his full-time duties at Oneonta immediately.

DUANE RITTER ASSUMES POSITION AS HEAD WRESTLING COACH

Oneonta State Director of Athletics Steve Garner announced on June 16 that Duane Ritter was selected as the new head coach of the wrestling program. Ritter replaces Al Sosa who retired from coaching after 38 years at the helm of the Red Dragons ̓wrestling program. “We had a strong pool of applicants and Duane had an impressive interview,” said Garner. “We have a known commodity in Duane seeing that heʼs been working with the program for four years now. He has built a great rapport with the returning wrestlers and we are confident that he can lead our program to new heights.” Ritter worked this past year as the full time residence hall director for Higgins hall while serving as the part time assistant for the wrestling program. He is a 2000 graduate of Wilkes University where he was a double major in psychology and sociology. Ritter is currently working towards a masterʼs degree in education at Oneonta State with a concentration in school counseling K-12. As the top assistant for Oneonta during the past four years Ritter has been involved in all aspects of the wrestling program. He has been responsible for practice development, recruiting throughout the state of New York and the northeast region and serving as the coordinator of community service projects for the wrestling team. He also was the academic enhancement program coordinator where he was in charge of tutoring and study sessions to help with the academic success and retention of wrestlers within the program. His extensive volunteer work since moving to the area has earned him community service awards from various organizations including Opportunities for Otsego, which honored him in 2002 with a volunteer of the year award.

While at Wilkes Ritter was a four-year member of the wrestling team and competed as a scholarship athlete during the program s̓ Div. I stint. He was nationally ranked as a Div. III wrestler where he compiled a 28-3 record during his senior year. He earned Scholar All-America honors in both Div. I and Div. III while serving as team captain for three years. He was the recipient of the University scholarship for wrestling and academics each year and was inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, which is the International Sociology Honors Society. In addition to being the wrestling coach, Ritter will also assume the duties and responsibilities of being the director of the college s̓ two fitness centers. He will be responsible for its daily operation and developing programs for the faculty, staff and students at the college.

The college has made a full-time commitment to men s̓ and womenʼs tennis for the first time and we are confident that Bill will guide both programs to the next level.” May comes to Oneonta after spending the last three years at Indiana Wesleyan University where he coached the menʼs tennis team to a cumulative record of 60-10 including a 19-3 record in 2003. THE COLLEGE AT ONEONTA HONORS ITS ATHLETESLouer and Stevens Selected as Athletes of the Year

On Monday evening, May 10, the College held its annual athletic awards banquet to honor and recognize the outstanding performances and achievements by its student-athletes from this past year. It was the 15th annual event and was held in the Hunt Union Ballroom. The Athletics Department hands out six major awards each year for both male and females along with honoring a Most Valuable Player from each varsity team. The major awards that are given include the top male and female Scholar-Athletes, First Year Players, Most Outstanding Single Performances, the Valor Award, the G. Hal Chase Memorial Awards and the Athletes of the Year. The awards are voted on by the entire department staff after each coach submits their nominations. Garnering the honor as the outstanding male and female athletes for 2003-04 are seniors Mike Louer (Islip, NY) and Kelly Stevens (Rochester, NY). Louer has started every game in goal for the menʼs lacrosse team during his four-year career. He has helped lead the Red Dragons

to four SUNYAC and one ECAC tournament appearances. He has been a four-time All-SUNYAC goalie including twice being named to the first team. In 2002 Louer was selected as a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association honorable mention All-American. Louer will leave the program tied for the most wins all-time by a goalie with 40, which was set by John Pufky who played from 1996-99. Stevens will leave a lasting legacy in two sports when she graduates in two weeks. She was a two-year captain of the womenʼs soccer team and helped lead them to the collegeʼs first team national championship

last fall along with being an All-American performer in the sport of track & field. Stevens was a four-year starter for the womenʼs soccer team and was honored for her play on the field and in the classroom. She holds every record for indoor and outdoor track from the 800-meter run to the 1,500-meter run and in between. She is a two-time SUNYAC champion in both indoor and outdoor track & field and this past winter earned All-America honors in the 800 and the distance medley relay. The first award of the evening goes to the male and female Scholar-Athletes of the Year. This yearʼs recipients were juniors Luke Kitchen (Stroud, England) and Ashlee Robertson (Mechanicville, NY). Kitchen is the starting sweeper for the menʼs soccer team and helped lead the Red Dragons to its best winning percentage in nearly 30 years. Kitchen was an All-Conference selection last fall along with being a CoSIDA Academic All-District 1 selection for his accomplishments in the classroom. Robertson has been a top performer for the indoor and outdoor track & field program for three years. She is a SUNYAC champion, an All-American and a top-flight student in the classroom. She holds indoor and outdoor records in all the sprints and, this spring, she was inducted into the National Student Honor Society of Chi Alpha Sigma. Selections for the Fred Puritz First Year Athlete of the Year, which are named in honor of former Intercollegiate Athletic Board Chair, Dr. Fred Puritz, were sophomore Art Driscoll (Saugerties, NY) and freshman Erin Maybeck (Huntington, NY). Driscoll transferred to Oneonta in January and had an immediate impact on the track & field program. Not only did he add depth in the sprints, he became the teamʼs No. 1 sprinter. At the SUNYAC indoor championships he earned two medals while taking four medals at the outdoor championships. He was also the runner-up in the 200-meter dash at the ECAC indoor championships. All Maybeck did this spring was lead the womenʼs lacrosse team in scoring while helping to lead the team to its first ECAC berth since 1998. The team finished 10-7 and Maybeck scored ??? and assisted on ??? for ??? points. She was selected as co-first player of the year in the SUNYAC while being selected to the All-Conference first team. This yearʼs Outstanding Single Performance Awards went to Shaun Hurley (Saratoga Springs, NY), junior Brooke Davis (Grand Gorge, NY) and sophomore Amy Herba (Johnstown, NY).

Hurley was selected for his double-win at the SUNYAC indoor track & field championships this past winter. Hurley, who holds the school indoor record in both the triple jump and high jump, took home conference titles in both events in helping the men to a fifth place finish at the championships. Davis was selected for her game-tying goal in the NCAA championship game against Chicago with 29 seconds left in regulation and sent the game into overtime. The womenʼs soccer team would defeat Chicago 2-1 in overtime to win the national title. During the NCAA title run Davis would score four of the five game-winning goals to go with the game-tying goal she scored in the championship game. Herbaʼs performance came in the softball teamʼs run to the SUNYAC championship. In the third game of the conference tournament Herba went the distance and pitched a shutout in a 16-inning, 1-0 victory against Buffalo State that advanced the Red Dragons into the championship game against Cortland. Oneonta would finally defeat Cortland 5-2 in the second championship game when Herba came back to pitch a complete game to earn her fourth win of the tournament. The Valor Award goes to the male and female athletes who have persevered through hardships and/or injuries to regain a prominent status on their team. This yearʼs recipients are junior Brent Tortarella (Staatsburg, NY) and sophomore Michelle Norwich (Mohawk, NY). Tortarella returned this season to the starting catcher position on the baseball team after an injury shortened his season a year ago and became a first team All-SUNYAC selection. Norwich has been dealing with a family crisis and is the starting catcher for the softball team. This spring she was a first team All-SUNYAC selection and led the team in hitting. The G. Hal Chase Memorial Award is awarded each year to the athlete who has shown exemplary loyalty, leadership and dedication while making a significant contribution to the overall success of the total athletic program and is given in honor of Mr. Chase who was mainly responsible for developing the athletics program that continues to thrive and succeed. This yearʼs recipients are seniors Dan Verdi (Savannah, NY) of the cross country and track & field teams and Lacey Musso (Wading River, NY) of the volleyball team. Both were captains of their respective teams and did much beyond what would be asked of any athlete in, or outside, of competition. Verdi served as the President of the Student Athlete Advisory Council this year and was responsible for organizing the athleteʼs involvement in many events on and off campus. Musso has garnered many athletic awards during her four-year career as a member of the volleyball team, but has also found the time to be involved in other groups on campus that has benefited the entire athletics department. She served for four years as a member of both SAAC and as a Peer Athletic Leader and was involved in many community service events throughout the city of Oneonta and the region. Besides the major awards that were given out the Most Valuable Players from each team also received plaques for being chosen by their coaches. Those athletes who were chosen are as follows: Jack Potter of Liverpool, England (menʼs soccer); Sanada Mujanovic of Centereach, N.Y. (womenʼs soccer); Jenn Miller of Chestertown, N.Y. (field hockey); Lacey Musso of Wading River, N.Y. (volleyball); Gillian Sutera of Middletown, N.Y. (womenʼs swimming & diving); Bill Dergosits of Schenectady, N.Y. (menʼs swimming & diving); MacLean Moore of Sunnyside, N.Y. (menʼs basketball); Melissa Donohue of Niverville, N.Y. (womenʼs basketball); Dustin Winn of Bainbridge, N.Y. (wrestling); Melissa DiRaddo of DeWitt, N.Y. (womenʼs lacrosse); Brent Tortarella of Staatsburg, N.Y. (baseball); Patrick OʼToole of Liverpool, N.Y. (menʼs outdoor track & field); Kelly Stevens of Rochester, N.Y. (womenʼs outdoor track & field).

DUSTIN WINN EARNS ACADEMIC HONORJunior Honored for Achievements in Classroom

The College Sports Information Directors of America released its College Division Academic All-District I At-Large Team and Oneonta State junior wrestler Dustin Winn (Bainbridge, NY/Bainbridge) was selected to the second team. The honor for Winn is his first from CoSIDA and the Academic All-America program. The District I Team is selected by the Sports Information Directors from colleges in the New England states along with the state of New York.

This is the second time this year that Winn was honored for his academic achievements. At the NCAA Div. III wrestling tournament in March the Div. III National Wrestling Coaches Association selected him for a second straight year as a Scholar All-American. Winn, who was injured prior to the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference championships, finished the season with a 29-2 record overall and a team-best nine pins. He won two individual invitational titles and earned All-New York State wrestling honors for a third consecutive year after placing second at 157 lbs. To be eligible for selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, an athlete must achieve a 3.2 GPA and be a starter or significant player on their team.
