No one ever believed that the spring season would arrive with the late snowfall that carried into the month of April. When the snow turned to rain, it caused more rescheduled games, mostly in baseball and softball, but nonetheless it made for a hectic finish to the regular season for all teams. Spring team highlights included the womenʼs lacrosse and softball teams playing in the SUNYAC championship games along with the baseball team claiming co-champions of the ECAC Upstate New York Tournament. Individually, junior Kelly Stevens (Rochester, NY) became the first female track athlete to qualify for the NCAA outdoor championship. She also helped lead the 1600-meter relay foursome to a SU-NYAC title at the conference outdoor championship meet.

Baseball

The baseball team opened its 2003 season by winning the first nine games in Florida to start the season perfect. The Red Dragons got solid pitching and clutch hitting during the best start ever to a season and outscored its nine opponents 56-24. After a 4-1 loss to Mount St. Mary on the road to

begin the northern part of the schedule, the Red Dragons defeated preseason #4 Rensselaer 5-3. The 10-1 start got the team a #10 ranking in the first national poll of the regular season and a #1 ranking in the New York Region. The team hit a wall during the middle part of the season where the hitting and pitching were not as effective as they had been in the earlier 11 games. After a doubleheader split with Brockport the team stood at 16-10 and on the verge of

not making the conference tournament. The Red Dragons regrouped and won back-to-back doubleheaders over SUNYIT and Oswego to clinch a spot in the SUNYAC tournament while regaining some momentum that would carry them into the late part of the schedule. In the SUNYAC tournament the Red Dragons faced its rival from Cortland in the opener and dropped a 9-1 deci-sion. They rebounded to defeat Plattsburgh 10-6 to set up another elimination game against Brockport, which ended in favor of the Golden Eagles 17-2. The regular season ended with a 17-3 rout of Hartwick after the team learned it was selected to play in the ECAC Upstate New York Tournament at Brockport. Oneonta defeated RIT 6-3 in the semifinals to advance to the championship game where they would face Brockport. Unfortunately mother nature did not cooperate and the game was cancelled and the two teams were declared co-

champions.

Women’s Lacrosse

The womenʼs lacrosse followed up last yearʼs record-setting season with another as they finished 11-4 overall. The 11 wins for the Red Dragons broke the single season record set in 2002 when the team finished 10-6. This yearʼs team did qualify for the conference tournament and played Cortland in the championship game where they were defeated 15-7 to end the season. ries including wins over conference rivals Brockport and Geneseo. The first set-back of the year came against Skidmore 16-9 at home before rebounding with a 14-5 road win at New Paltz to set up a date with Cortland for first place in the conference. Although Oneonta was defeated 12-7, they definitely sent a message that they were closer to their SUNYAC rival than was first thought by their opponents. The regular season finished with a pair of wins against Buffalo State and Fredo-nia and a loss to Oswego in the second/third place game. The Red Dragons did get revenge with a 13-12 victory over Oswego in the conference tournament semifinals to advance into the championship game for the first time since 1998. The team was amongst the NCAA Div. III leaders in ground balls per game, scoring offense, draw controls and caused turnovers. Senior Sarah Andrews (Tompkins Cove, NY) was the only individual who was ranked in the top-20 in any category as she finished 17th in goals per game at 3.8.

Softball

The softball team had a second solid season under Denise Marchese as they turned in a 24-14 spring while nearly upset-ting conference favorite Cortland in the conference tournament. The Red Dragons made an improbable run from the sixth seed to advance to the final game before losing in the eighth inning on a walk-off home run. The season began in Ft. Myers, Fla. where the team sandwiched a pair of losses between a couple of three-game winning streaks. The winning continued up north with a pair of wins over Russell Sage and a single victory against Skidmore to run the record to 9-2. The Red Dragons then went through a stretch of 12 games in eight days that saw them go 6-6 conclud-ing with a doubleheader sweep of Oswego. The regular season ended with a sweep of SUNYIT at home to put the Red Dragons in the sixth slot for the upcoming SUNYAC tournament. In the tournament Oneonta had to play defending conference champion Geneseo in the opening game. The Red Dragons were shutout 2-0 and had to play an elimination game at the end of day one, which they won 4-3 against Plattsburgh on

a walk-off home run by senior Beth Op-penheimer (Webster, NY). Oneonta avoided elimination for a second time with a 4-1 win over Brockport that set up a rematch with Geneseo in an elimination game for both teams. Oneonta jumped out to a 3-1 lead after three innings and increased it to 4-1 entering the bottom of the seventh. Geneseo rallied and cut the lead to 4-3 before fresh-man Theresa Gugger (Binghamton, NY) relieved starter Amy Herba (Johnstown, NY) with one out and the bases loaded. Gugger

got the Blue Knight batter to ground into a double play to end the game and move Oneonta into the championship bracket with Cortland. In the first championship game Oneonta scored five runs in the second inning, three of which scored on a bases-clearing double by Oppenheimer, and then held off a seventh inning rally for a 5-4 win. Freshman Kerry Donohue (Salisbury Mills, NY) picked up a save after recording the final two outs after Cortland had hit a two-run home run to cut the lead to one. In the second championship game Oneonta had a 2-1 lead before Cortland tied the game at 2-2 with a single run in the home half of the sixth. The game ended with the first batter of the eighth inning for Cortland with the home run. Individual highlights in 2003 saw Oppenheimer become the all-time leader in hits and runs while classmate Tara Hinkle (Fonda, NY) became the career leader in doubles and runs batted in.

Men’s Lacrosse

The phrase that best describes the 2003 menʼs lacrosse season, “Donʼt leave your seat or you might miss a great ending.” The Red Dragons finished 9-9 overall and had six games decided by one goal. Fortunately Oneonta came out ahead with four wins against two defeats in those six games. The close games spoke more to the fact going into the season that the high-powered offense that demolished many teams the previous year was gone. The Red Dragons had to rely on its de-fense and take advantage of the fast break when it was available. The spring began with a couple of road losses to two nationally ranked opponents in Hampden-Sydney and Rens-selaer. The latter was the first of the two one-goal losses on the season 10-9. The Red Dragons then got into the win column with a 10-1 rout of Scranton before losing a heartbreaker in the final minute to Hamilton 10-9. After a 17-4 win over Union at home, Oneonta dropped two straight to fall to 2-5 overall. The Red Dragons then won seven of its next eight games that included a 23-1 win over SUNYIT and a thrilling three overtime win against Potsdam at home that secured a spot in the conference tournament. Senior Vin Schettino (Holbrook, NY) tallied the game-winner with 2:08 remaining in the third overtime period. Oneonta led 8-5 in the fourth quarter before the visitors ran off four unanswered goals to take a 9-8 lead with 6:57 remaining. Junior James

Battaglia (Saratoga, NY) tied the game for Oneonta with just over three minutes to go forcing the extra sessions. Unfortu-nately the Potsdam win would be the final victory of the season as Oneonta dropped its final three games including a loss to Geneseo in the semifinals on the SUNYAC tournament.

Men’s Tennis

The 2002-03 year was another winning one for the Red Dragons as they completed a 13-4 dual-match season. The fall season saw long time coach Jim Baker retire, but not before he saw his squad go 7-0 while capturing the Flower City Tournament hosted by Nazareth. The spring season had womenʼs coach Ed OʼMalley pick up for Baker and lead them to a 6-4 record. The fall season began at Nazareth for the Flower City Tournament where Oneonta won its three matches including the championship match against Hobart. The Red Dragons defeated

St. Lawrence 6-1 in its opening match before edging Ithaca 4-3 in the semifinals. Freshmen Lucas Coene (Binghamton, NY) and Shaun Goodman (Morganville, NJ) along with junior Patrick OʼToole (Liv-erpool, NY) each completed undefeated weekends in singles and doubles play. The second weekend of the fall was the ECAC Northeast Regional Champion-ships where Oneonta placed fifth overall and had two players advance to the later rounds. Goodman made it all the way to the finals at fourth singles while OʼToole lost in the

semifinals at third singles. The rest of the fall season saw the Red Dragons win its final four dual matches and the 7-0 record and their showing at the ECAC earned them at #15 ranking regionally at the end of the fall. The spring season started as it always does in Hilton Head, S.C. where the team played four tough opponents and came back north with only one win to show for their efforts. Oneonta ran off three straight wins to get to 4-3 before losing to Ithaca. Oneonta closed the spring with wins over Utica and Oswego to finish 6-4.

ONEONTA STATE SELECTS IAIN BYRNE AS MEN’S SOCCER COACH

Byrne Named Interim Head Coach

Oneonta State Athletics Director Steve Garner an-nounced June 26 that effective immediately Iain Byrne had been officially appointed as interim head coach of the menʼs soccer team for the upcoming season. “We have an outstanding coach who has the respect of

the players,” said Garner. “Iain has been responsible for all aspects of our program during his tenure with us and will now have the op-portunity to bring his own energy and professionalism to the head coaching position of our menʼs Div. I program.” Byrne has been the top as-sistant for Oneonta for six seasons and worked under Rob Russo and Ian McIntyre. He is a tireless worker for the program in all areas involving recruitment and player development. He is a student of the

game and has been the director of the junior varsity program. “This is a terrific chance to direct a competitive Div. I program,” said Byrne. “Soccer has been a passion for me and has opened many doors that has allowed me to stay involved. I am thankful for the opportunity that Oneonta has given me and I

will do my best to continue the strong tradition of menʼs soccer at Oneonta.” Born in England and raised in South Africa, Byrne represented the South African Schoolʼs Team in 1977 and 1978. He turned professional at the age of 18 and played for Durban City and Arcadia, both top club teams in South Africa. In 1984 and 1985 he played for the National Team under World Cup coach Clive Barker. Byrne settled in the United States in 1985 and spent 10 years coaching and directing youth soccer organi-zations in Georgia and Florida. This summer Byrne will serve as the Summer Tournament Director for the National Soccer Hall of Fame after last year serving as the assistant director. Senior co-captain James Crofts has this to say of the move: “We are excited for coach Byrne. The players respect him and will play hard for him. Our goal now is to get ready for the upcoming season and prepare ourselves to make a run at winning our conference and getting to the NCAA tournament.” The Red Dragons are coming off a 5-9-4 season last fall that saw them struggle to score goals most of the year. It was the first sub-.500 season that they had in the three years under for-mer coach McIntyre. Oneonta competes in the Atlantic Soccer Conference that includes Adelphi University, Florida Interna-tional, Hartwick College, Howard University and Philadelphia University. The conference will enter its fourth season this fall and does have automatic qualification to the NCAA tournament. Oneonta State opens its 2003 season at home on Satur-day, Aug. 30 against St. Bonaventure.

VERIZON HONORS FOR A PAIR OF ONEONTA STATE ATHLETES

Senior Beth Oppenheimer (Webster, NY) and Tristen Weaver (Ithaca, NY) were honored again this spring for their academic accomplishments. While both athletes earned Verizon Academic District 1 honors, Oppenheimer went on to receive honors as the Collegeʼs fi rst, First Team Academic All-American. Op-penheimer, who was selected as an Academic All-American last spring, earned her honors in softball while Weaver earned hers on the At-Large Team.

Oppenheimer helped lead the Red Dragons to a 24-14 record this spring and an appearance in the championship game of the SUNYAC. She was a catalyst in leading the program to over 100 wins during her four-year career, which included a SUNYAC title and NCAA berth as during her sophomore season.

Oppenheimerʼs academic accolades are numerous and include be-ing selected as one of 12 students from the college as a recipient of the SUNY Chancellorʼs Award for Student Excellence this spring, which is the highest honor any student can receive from the SUNY system. She was one of only 10 females to be a recipient of an Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award by the New York State Womenʼs Collegiate Athletic Association. She has appeared on the SUNYAC Commissionerʼs List and All-Academic Team, has been a recipient of the Susan Sutton Smith and Provostʼs Award for academic excellence from the college while being inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student Honor Society.

This spring Oppenheimer earned fi rst team Regional All-America honors, which was the third time during her career that she was honored region-ally. She led the team in hitting (.395), total bases (68) and slugging (.571) and was an All-SUNYAC selection. She will leave the program as its all-time leader in hits (197) and runs scored (119).

Oppenheimer, who majored in biology as an undergraduate, is pursu-ing an advanced degree in physical therapy and has already begun her graduate work at the University of Syracuse.

Weaver was team co-captain this past winter for the womenʼs swim-ming & diving team for a second straight year. She earned SUNYAC medals at the conference championship meet in four relays and was a two-time team MVP during her career.

Academically, Weaver was one of the Collegeʼs recipients of the SUNY Chancellorʼs Award for Student Excellence this spring. She was a two-time recipient of the Jan Kee Ang Scholarship for academic excellence in biology while also being named to the SUNYAC Com-missionerʼs List for four straight semesters. Last spring she was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, which is the National Student Honor Society. Weaver was also an active member of the Student Athlete Advisory Council and was its president this past academic year.

Red Dragon Soccer FieldCeremony before men’s game against Hartwick

Fall Team Outlooks

Men’s Soccer

The men will return its largest senior class in recent memory as they try to rebound from a 5-9-4 season from a year ago. Interim head coach Iain Byrne will have his work cut out for him as he gets the opportunity to take over the program after serving as the top assistant for the last six years. Senior co-captains James Crofts (Godstone, England) and James Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica) will lead the squad in 2003 from the defensive end of the field. 2001 Regional All-American Jme Amoako (Brooklyn, NY) will enter his final season as the teamʼs top scoring threat. Senior Jack Potter (Liverpool, England) will handle the bulk of the goalkeeping duties as he has the past two years.

Women’s Soccer

The women will try for an unprecedented fifth straight SUNYAC title as they return all 11 starters from a team that finished 20-3-1 in 2002. Seniors Sanada Mujanovic (Centereach, NY) and Kelly Stevens (Rochester, NY) will serve as team captains again this fall and hope to lead the Red Dragons to a fifth straight undefeated conference season including the SUNYAC tournament. Classmates Amanda LaPolla (New Hartford, NY), Alissa Karcz (S. Huntington, NY) and Rose Velan (Stamford, NY) will join Stevens and Mujanovic as they look to become the first class of four-year players to never have lost a SUNYAC game.

Volleyball

The 2003 Red Dragons look to follow last yearʼs first NCAA appear-ance with a second one as they return four starters and 11 players overall from its 31-13 season a year ago. Senior Lacey Musso (Wading River, NY) will once again lead the team from the setter position. Musso earned Regional All-Amer-ica honors in 2002 as well as being selected as Co-MVP of the SUNYAC East Division. Other top returners include, seniors Kristine Clark (Jackson Heights, NY) and Becky Leccese (Mt. Kisco, NY), juniors Cassandra Auth (East Patchogue, NY) and Krysta Bradford (Middletown, NY) and sophomore Jill Meehan (Albany, NY).

Field Hockey

The field hockey team returns three of the top five scorers from a squad that completed an 8-9 season that also included a second place finish in the SUNYAC with a 4-1 record. The team does return a large nucleus of experi-enced players including five seniors. Junior Brynne Hoover (Walton, NY) and seniors Jess Keller (Clinton, NY) and Jenn Miller (Chestertown, NY) will be counted on to lead the offense. Junior Kelly Mohr (Danbury, CT) and sopho-more Lindsey Hendricks (Warrensburg, NY) will mind the goal for Oneonta in 2003.

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country

Both squads will continue to build on last year and look to improve overall at some very competitive meets in 2003. The men have a solid nucleus of returners led by seniors Brian Suozzo (Franklin, NY) and Dan Verdi (Savan-nah, NY). The menʼs team should have its greatest depth in years with nine underclassmen returning to compete for a top-7 spot. The women are looking to improve on its numbers with a disappoint-ing finish to 2002. The nucleus includes sophomore Maria Compson (Queens-bury, NY) and seniors Jessica Tylutki (Remsen, NY) and Abby McQueeney-Penamonte (Mendon, NY). Compson had an instant impact last year and was the top overall finisher in every race in 2002 for the women.

Women’s Tennis

The womenʼs tennis team will open the season with a new coach and a lot of questions surrounding who will return to the line up in 2003. The women finished 10-3 in dual matches in 2002, which was its fourth straight winning season. Senior Trudy Hudson (Amsterdam, NY) and junior Catherine Lodico (Elmira, NY) should be slotted into the top two spots in singles. Hudson was 9-7 in singles last year and Lodico was 14-4 and was a SUNYAC finalist at second singles.
