VOLLEYBALL AND WOMEN’S SOCCER WIN SUNYAC TITLESBOTH TEAMS ADVANCE TO REGIONALS IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

The 2002 edition of the volleyball team had many goals entering the season, four of which were to beat Cortland, win 30 matches, win the SUNYAC championship and earn a berth to the NCAA tournament. Mission accomplished! By the time the team had stopped playing its final match against NYU in the NCAA regional semifinals, all of those goals were met along with many others that helped mo-tivate them to possibly the greatest season ever for women’s volleyball. They finished 31-13 overall, defeated Cortland not once, but three times, including snapping their 66-match winning streak in SUNYAC pool play, won the conference championship and earned the program’s first NCAA berth. The opening weekend of the season had Oneonta hosting its own Invitational tournament in which they placed third out of 12 teams. The Red Dragons won their two opening matches on the first night against Rochester and Baruch and split a pair of matches on the final day, losing to Nazareth and defeating St. Lawrence. Fresh-man Jill Meehan (Albany, NY) had a solid first weekend in a Red Dragon uniform with 23 kills, three blocks and five aces and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. The second weekend of the season Oneonta traveled to Ithaca to participate in the Bomber Invita-tional and finished third overall with a 3-1 record for the weekend. The only setback was to the hosts as the Red Dragons defeated Skidmore, New Paltz and Wid-

The old saying goes, “Winning breeds win-ning,” and in the case of the women’s soc-cer team, it seems to be the theme every year. The Red Dragons put together another record-set-ting season en route to its fourth straight SUNYAC title and their fourth consecutive NCAA berth. The team finished 20-3-1 overall to tie the record for most wins in a season, set in 2000, and set the record for goals in a season with 70, which broke the old record of 69, also set in 2000. The team also had its fourth straight undefeated season in conference play while extending their SUNYAC winning streak to 48 games including the last four conference tournaments. The confer-ence winning streak is currently the second longest streak of its kind in the history of NCAA Div. III women’s soccer. The season began at Wheaton College in Mas-sachusetts for the Adidas Kick-Off Classic. Oneonta went 1-1 during the event with a 3-1 win over Mont-clair State and a 3-2 loss to the hosts in the championship game. Junior Alissa Karcz (S. Huntington, NY) led the way for the Red Dragons with two goals and one assist and she, along with sophomore Tricia Jaeger (Baldwin, NY) and freshman Sarah Tauber (Valley Stream, NY), were named to the All-Tournament Team. The Red Dragons ran off 16 straight wins after the loss to

ener in their other matches. Junior Lacey Musso (Wad-ing River, NY) earned the first of many individual hon-ors as she was selected to the All-Tournament Team. After a tough 3-2 loss to Union College at their In-

vitational two weeks later, Oneonta ran off 12 straight wins including five during the first weekend of SUNYAC pool play to put them in the drivers seat in the East Divi-sion. The highlight of the weekend was the win over Cortland that snapped Cortland’s winning streak in pool play dating back to 1996. Ironically, the last team to beat Cortland was Binghamton when Oneonta head coach Colleen Cash-man was a player for the Colonials.

The team hit its only skid of the season in mid October when they lost five of six matches including all four at the Emory University Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. The Red Dragons were able to clinch the SUNYAC East Division during the last weekend of the month with a 4-1 record to finish 9-1 overall. One final tune up at the NYSWCAA Tournament prior to the conference cham-pionship saw Oneonta place fourth in the 12-team field. At the SUNYAC Championship Oneonta went the distance in both matches and were able to prevail with 3-2 wins over Geneseo in the semifinals and Cort-land in the final. Musso was selected to the All-Tourna-ment Team along with senior Jacqueline Leahy (Ma-hopac, NY) and junior Kristine Clark (Jackson Heights, NY) who was selected as an Honorable Mention. In the NCAA Regional Tournament at Nazareth, Oneonta came from behind to pull out a 3-2 victory over Hunter in the opening round. Musso and Leahy each had 11 kills while Clark contributed five blocks and 10 kills. In the semifinal match Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 lead but was unable to finish off NYU in a five-game thriller. There were many honors and awards for this year’s team including SUNYAC and NYSWCAA Coach of the Year for Coach Cashman. Musso was selected to the All-Confer-ence Team for a third straight year along with being the Co-MVP in the East on her way to being a Regional All-American.

Wheaton including winning both the Mayor’s Cup and the Red Dragon Cup on successive weekends. During one stretch of the winning streak Oneonta posted eight straight shutouts and 12 overall as they outscored their opponents 56 to 5. The regular season ended with a 2-1 loss at Ithaca and a 1-1 tie at Hamilton as the team looked forward to the SUNYAC Tournament ten days later. In the conference tournament the first opponent was Brockport, who proved to be no match for Oneonta as the Red Dragons won easily 4-0. Tauber fueled the Oneonta attack from her left back position with a goal and an assist. In the championship game against Geneseo it was Tauber again who came up big with the game-clinching score in the penalty kick shootout. Af-ter a scoreless 110 minutes of play the game went to the shootout where Tauber scored the fourth goal in the 4-2 win in penalty kicks. Classmate Laura Morcone (Mechanicville, NY) came up with two saves during the shootout that put Oneonta in the position to win the game. For a second straight year Oneonta was awarded a first round home game in the NCAA Tournament and hosted the University of Scranton. On the line was a trip to Chicago for the Central Region semifinals as the winner was being shipped out of region. Oneonta dominated the game from start to finish winning the match 2-0 to punch their ticket to the windy city. The eventual game-winner was scored in the 29th minute by freshman Heather Simpson (Sayville, NY) with an as-sist from Tauber who sent a ball in from the right flank. Oneonta was matched against the host University of Chicago in the regional semifinal, which was played in below freezing temperatures. The Red Dragons scored the game’s first goal in the 58th minute on a corner kick that sophomore Cassie Perino (Patchogue, NY) was able to redirect into the goal. As the game wore on Chicago began to seize momen-tum and was able to capitalize on a direct kick to tie the game in the 84th minute. After a scoreless first overtime pe-riod the game was ended in the 107th minute when Chicago converted on an odd-numbered break for the 2-1 victory.

Seven Former Athletes Part of Fourth Induction Class

The College at Oneonta welcomed seven new members to its Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 5. This year’s class, which is the fourth, brings the total number of inductees to 48. This year’s class included Alex Brannan ‘82, Eileen Colwell-Jones ‘94, Juan DeJesus ‘82, Jim Dever ‘69, Ronald Magin ‘67, Keith Tozer ‘79 and George Werthmuller ‘70. Brannan was a four-year member of the men’s soccer team and earned All-America honors as a senior. During his ca-reer he helped lead the Red Dragons to a 42-14-7 record, includ-ing three seasons with 10 or more victories. He played in 62 ca-reer games and collected five goals and nine assists as a defender. He was a four-time All-SUNYAC selection, two-time All-State performer, and MVP of the Mayor’s Cup Tournament as a junior. Brannan played professionally for the Denver Avalanche of the MISL in 1980 and 1981 before working as an assistant coach at the College from 1982 to 1985. Currently the head boys soccer coach at Oneonta High School, he has led his team to several con-ference titles and one state title. Brannan has been selected as Coach of the Year four times by the “Daily Star” and once by the Division. Colwell-Jones was a standout student-athlete for the field hockey team during her four years at the College. She received many athletic and academic accolades as a four-year starter, including twice being named an All-American. As a senior she served as tri-captain, played in the North/South All-Star game, and was selected as the Oneonta State Female Athlete of the year. Colwell-Jones is currently employed by the State Farm Insurance Agnecy of N. Syracuse as an investigator on their special investigation unit. DeJesus was a two-time All-American and three-time NCAA qualifier in the sport of wrestling. He served as team co-captain as a senior and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Economics. He is currently a Human Resources Consultant for the U.S. Secret Service. Dever set the pace for the future of cross country and track & field during his four years at the College. He was nearly unbeatable in the sport of cross country, winning 46 of 50 dual races in his career. In 1968 he won the New York State Cross Country Championships and placed 20th at the NCAA Cross Country Nationals. In track he was the SUNYAC Champion in both the 1-mile and 2-mile races in 1968. Graduating with a degree in Secondary Math, Dever has spent his entire professional career as a teach-er and coach in the NY Mills School District, where he holds the title of District Technology Coordinator. Magin is the most decorated All-American in school history and has the distinction of being the College’s first All-American in any sport. A seven-time All-American, he earned four individual plaques in the backstroke and three more in the medley relay event. He was undefeated in dual-meet competition for four years in the backstroke and was Conference Champion three times. After teaching in the public school setting for 23 years, Magin moved into the private sector and is now the owner of Au-tomated Business Concepts, Inc. where he has worked since 1991. Tozer, currently the head soccer coach of the Milwaukee Wave in the NPSL, is the all-time leading scorer for the men’s soccer program at the College. During his four years as a Red Dragon, he led the team in scoring in each season and finished with 50 goals and 17 assists for 117 career points. Tozer tal-

lied 11 game-winning goals during his four-year career as the team compiled a cumulative record of 40-15-7 including a 13-1-1 record in 1977. Tozer earned All-New York State hon-ors as a senior and SUNYAC Honorable Mention as a junior. Since his graduation, Tozer has been involved in pro-fessional soccer as a player and coach. He played for four dif-ferent indoor teams, scoring 32 goals and registering 35 assists in 100 career games before turning to coaching. With 503 wins in 18 seasons, he is the winningest head coach in North Ameri-can indoor soccer history. He has led the Wave to three NPSL titles and has been selected as Coach of the Year four times. Werthmuller made his mark in the sport of basketball at the College. During his career he was an All-SUNYAC First Team performer, team captain and team MVP. He earned nu-merous selections as All-East Player of the Week as a two-year starter for the Red Dragons and led the team in scoring as a senior. Graduating with a degree in History on 1970, Werthmuller has spent his career as a teacher, coach and administrator where he has enjoyed much success.

KELLY STEVENS NAMED TO DISTRICT ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

ONEONTA, N.Y.--Junior women’s soccer player Kelly Stevens of Rochester, N.Y. was selected to the Ve-rizon Academic All-District 1 Third Team for the College Division in the sport of soccer this fall. The Academic All-America program is sponsored by Verizon Communica-

tions and the team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. MEN’S SOCCER STRUGGLES THROUGH 2002 SEASON

As the 2002 men’s soccer season opened, there was much optimism and hope that this would be the year to break through regionally and possibly nationally. That optimism

turned to disappointment as the team struggled to a 4-4 start only to contin-ue their slide to a 5-9-4 overall record. The season began on the road at the St. Bonaventure Tournament in which the Red Dragons went 0-2 on the weekend with losses to Pitts-burgh and the hosts. Bright spots in the opening weekend was the play of newcomers Stuart Hardy (Lingfield, England) and Mikinea Armstrong (Bronx, NY) who were both se-lected to the All-Tournament Team. The Red Dragons did bounce

back during the next weekend with a second place fin-ish at the Mayor’s Cup with wins over Hartford and Albany. Senior Ryan Rummery (Biggin Hill, England) was selected as the Offensive MVP of the tourna-ment after scoring the game-winner against Hartford and assisting on the lone goal in the Albany victory. The Red Dragons continued their season open-ing road trip with losses at Hofstra and Northeastern be-fore returning home to face Canisius. The Red Dragons opened its home schedule with a 4-3 win in overtime as Rummery put home the game-winner in the 108th minute with an assist from junior Chris Montero (Green-lawn, NY). Oneonta followed the win over Canisius with another home victory over Philadelphia Univer-sity to open its Atlantic Soccer Conference schedule. After their win over Philadelphia the wheels seem to come off as the Red Dragons went “O” for October. Oneonta struggled through a winless month that saw them lose four games while tying four others. They finally ended the skid with a 2-0 victory at home over How-ard before ending the season with a 2-0 loss at Adelphi.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS CONTINUE TO BUILD WITH YOUTH

The men’s and women’s cross country teams continued to build with younger runners in 2002. The men’s team was able to show significant improvement overall with im-proved individual performances throughout the year while the women hit a wall with injuries at the end of the season and ran incomplete in the final three events of the season. The season began at the Cardinal Classic hosted

by Plattsburgh where both teams finished fourth overall. Junior co-captain Dan Verdi (Savannah, NY) was the top finisher for the men cover-ing the four-mile course in a personal best time of 22:44. Freshman Maria Compson (Queensbury, NY) led the women as she would all season with a time of 21:43 for the 5K race. The second weekend of the sea-son brought the highlight of the year for both teams as they won the

Hartwick Invitational. Junior co-captain Brian Suozzo (Franklin, NY) won for a third consecutive time on the mountain at Hartwick as he was the top overall finisher in the race on the men’s side. Compson again was the top runner for the women as she placed second overall. After an off week the two teams got back into action in Boston, Mass. at the Codfish Bowl. Both teams placed tenth in their respective races with Suozzo and Compson leading the troops. Homecoming weekend brought another team title to the men as they beat Colgate to win the Oneonta State Invitational. The women came in fourth, but were just one point out of second place. Suozzo continued his domi-nance of the Hartwick course com-ing in first overall with help from sophomore Bryan Reles (Cicero, NY), Verdi and freshman James Jones (Berkshire, NY) who came in fourth, sixth and ninth respectively. After a 10th place fin-ish for the men and a 14th place finish for the women at the Hamilton College Invitational, it was onto the SUNYAC, ECAC and NCAA Regional Championship meets. Unfortunately for the women injuries took a toll on the lineup and they had to run incomplete the rest of the way. After a 9th place finish at the SUNYAC Championship, the men had a strong showing at the ECAC meet with a 12th place finish out of 37 teams that competed and an 18th place showing at the NCAA regional meet, both of which were improved performances overall from 2001.

FIELD HOCKEY HAS BEST SEASON IN NEARLY A DECADE

The 2002 Red Dragons surprised many teams this fall with their improved play offensively en route to an 8-9 season including 4-1 in conference play for a second place finish. The eight wins for Oneonta were the most since 1996

when the squad won seven games. The season began slowly for the Red Dragons who managed only one win in the first four games of the season. Their lone win came in the second game of the year with a 6-2 victory over Utica Col-lege at home. Seniors Brooke Thomson (Bennington, VT) and Erica Polmateer (Johnstown, NY) led the way in the win with two goals apiece. Oneonta snapped a mini two-game

slide with back-to-back wins over Elmira and SUNYAC foe New Paltz to even its record at 3-3 entering the final week of September. A 2-1 overtime loss to Hartwick and a 6-2 loss to Skidmore dropped Oneonta below .500. Junior Jess Keller (Clinton, NY) scored the game-win-ner in a 2-1 overtime win over Brockport to snap the los-ing streak while putting Oneonta at 2-1 in the SUNYAC. After a 2-0 loss to Rochester on the road Oneonta beat Geneseo and Nazareth to get to back to the .500 mark at 6-6 with five games remaining. The team ended up los-ing three of the five to finish at 8-9 for the season. The final two wins for Oneonta did come in consecutive games with an offensive explosion that saw them outscore its opponents 12-1. The first victory was a 6-0 win over Oswego that clinched second place in the Conference for 2002. The sec-ond win came in the home finale against Union as the Red Dragons put up a five spot en route to a 6-1 win. The season ended with a road loss to Manhattanville that knocked them out of a chance for a berth in the NYSWCAA tournament.

DOMBROWSKI AND CASHMAN EARN SUNYAC COACH OF THE YEAR HONORS

Both Coaches Selected for Team’s Performance

When the SUNYAC field hockey and volleyball coaches were making their selections for coach of the year, both groups felt that Oneonta’s Michele Dombrowski and Colleen Cashman deserved the honor for leading their respective squads to outstanding seasons. Dombrowski earned the honor for the first time in her coaching career while Cashman takes the SUNYAC honor for the second time in the last three years. Cashman was also selected as the NYSWCAA Coach of the year.

Dombrowski, who is in her fifth sea-son as head coach, was honored after leading the field hockey team from last place in 2001 to second place this fall. The Red Dragons flipped their SUNYAC record of 1-4 in 2001 to 4-1 in 2002 with their only loss to Cortland who won the conference title. The Red Drag-ons finished 8-9 overall to register the most wins since 1996 when the squad finished 7-10. Currently in her fourth season, Cashman is now in a place all her own in

Oneonta State volleyball history in becom-ing the first coach to win a SUNYAC East Division title, a conference title and lead her team to the NCAA tournament. She became the third coach to lead the pro-gram to 30 wins in a season and currently has compiled an overall record of 99-73 at Oneonta while moving her current career head coaching record to 143-109 in six years.

WOMEN’S TENNIS POSTS ANOTHER WINNING SEASON

There was much optimism surrounding the women’s ten-nis team entering preseason with the prospect of many top players returning for the Red Dragons. That optimism was short-lived as a few key players decided not to play in 2002 leaving fourth-year coach Ed O’Malley to juggle his lineup and look to new players to produce immediately. The squad did have a solid nucleus of three veteran players in senior Beth Muller (Fredonia, NY), junior Trudy

Hudson (Hagaman, NY) and sophomore Catherine Lodico (Elmira, NY). This trio would lead the Red Dragons all fall and into the SUNYAC champion-ships with an opportunity to win it all. The season started with three straight wins against LeMoyne, Russell Sage and eventual SUNYAC Champion, New Paltz. The New Paltz match came down to the sixth singles spot where freshman Michelle Morgenstern (Massapequa, NY) won 6-4 in the third set to clinch the victory for Oneonta. Oneonta suffered its first de-feat of the season at Nazareth be-

fore running off five straight wins to bring their record to 8-1 with a month left in the season. During the five-match

win streak the Red Dragons recorded convincing wins over SUNYAC rivals Geneseo, Cortland and Plattsburgh. At the end of September Oneonta competed in the Rolex Regional Tournament at William Smith and came away with no champions. The only player for Oneonta to advance in any bracket was Muller who made it all the way to the final 16 of the singles draw. She won her opening match 8-5 and then won in straight sets to advance another round before being swept in straight sets to end her bid for a quarterfinal appearance. Oneonta finished the season with two wins in its final three matches to complete a 10-3 dual record which was the second time under O’Malley that the squad posted double dig-its in wins. At the SUNYAC championship Oneonta finished third overall with two finalists in singles and one in doubles. Both Muller and Lodico played in the finals at first and sec-ond singles respectively while Lodico and her partner, Cordea Twiggs (Latham, NY), played in the final at second doubles.
