The 2010 baseball team did what no team had done before this spring when they qualified for the NCAA Div. III tournament. The Red Dragons held out hope after an abbreviated SUNYAC tournament was cut short by snow, which gave the conference title to Brockport.

But the call came in the early morning hours of May 17 to head coach Rick Ferchen letting him know that the team had received an at-large berth. The Red Dragons would be the third seed in the eight team New York Regional, which would take place in Auburn, N.Y.

After dropping the opening game to Farmingdale, Oneonta staved off elimination three times before losing a heartbreaker to St. John Fisher, 6-5, in the bottom of the 11th inning.

The Red Dragons finished with an overall record of 31-13, which was the third time that the program has recorded 30 wins in a season in the last six years.

On Wednesday, June 9, the Atlanta Braves selected Dave Filak in the fourth round of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player

Draft with the 134th overall pick. Filak was the first Div. III player taken and became the baseball program’s highest draft pick ever.

Filak is the first Oneonta State player to be drafted since the Houston Astros picked left-handed pitcher Chris Salamida in the 13th round of the 2006 draft. Salamida was cut on the last day of spring training this year. He is currently pitching with the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the independent Northern League.

Roger Weaver, also a right-handed pitcher, was selected in the 16th round by the Detroit Tigers in 1976.

Two other O-State pitchers signed pro contracts after the turn of the century. Right-hander Mike Schellinger signed a free-agent contract with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2005 and lefty Scott Meyer got a free-agent deal from the Cincinnati Reds in 2001.

Filak went 8-1 for Oneonta State this past season, helping the Red Dragons (31-13) earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in school history. Filak’s lone loss came in the tournament, a 9-5 setback to Farmingdale.(continued on page 2)

He beat national runner-up Cortland twice this season, 4-1 during the regular season and 7-1 during the SUNY Athletic Conference Tournament. Filak threw nine-inning complete games both times.

Filak received numerous honors this spring for his outstanding season including being an All-American and the SUNYAC Pitcher of the Year. He was selected by the NCBWA as the New York Region Pitcher of the Year and was third in the Div. III National Pitcher of the Year voting. In his three seasons at O-State, Filak finished 18-5 with a 2.63 ERA. He struck out 250 in 160 2/3 innings, an average of 14 strikeouts per nine innings.

Filak signed with the Braves in mid-June and was assigned to the Danville (VA) Braves of the Appalachian League. You can follow Filak’s season at www.dbraves.com.

Academic All-America® Honors for Pair of Athletes

SUNY Oneonta graduate, Josh Wake of Delhi and senior-to-be, Sean Daly of Weedsport topped the spring academic honors for Oneonta with their selections as ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans®. Wake became the first male to earn First Team national honors for Oneonta while Daly was selected to the Second Team. The two bring the total to 12 times that Oneonta student athletes have earned national honors. Wake, who was an Academic All-District 1 First Team selection, is one of the most accomplished student athletes in the history of the college, combining academic success with athletic prowess in the sport of wrestling. He is an All-American in his sport, something that he accomplished this past March at the NCAA Div. III championships. He is a three-time NWCA Scholar All-American and, last fall, received the Dr. Sam Molnar award from the SUNYAC, which goes to the top male student athlete in the conference. Wake is second all-time in career wins with 129 and was a three-time All-State wrestler. He was a two-time ECWC champion and NCAA qualifier at 184 lbs. He was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student Athlete Honor Society, last spring along with being selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 1 At-Large second team. He received multiple academic scholarships and logged over 1,000 hours of community service. At the annual Athletics Department Awards ceremony, he received the Dr. Joseph Heissan Senior Achievement Award for his cumulative accomplishments during his four years as a student athlete. Daly was an Academic All-District 1 First Team selection as well. He is a year-round athlete for the Red Dragons and is a top performer in both cross-country and track & field. During the 2009 cross-country season, Daly was a top-seven runner for Oneonta all season long. During the indoor track season, he was an All-Conference performer while being a SUNYAC medalist during the outdoor season. He provisionally qualified for the outdoor NCAA championship meet in the 800-meter run, but wasn’t selected to compete. Recognized as a “Best & Brightest” student by the college, Daly has also earned honors in 2009 on the USTFCCCA Scholar Academic Team in the sport of track & field. He was inducted into the National Student Athlete Honor Society of Chi Alpha Sigma and will be a student trustee to the College Foundation Board for the upcoming academic year. Daly was voted by the athletics department as the top male scholar athlete for the 2009-10 year. To be eligible for nomination at the district level, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. A student athlete is eligible for the national ballot only if he/she is voted to the first team in one of the eight Co-SIDA districts. The voting for the national team is by members of the Academic All-America Committee and members of the Co-SIDA Board of Directors and past presidents of the organization, which amounts to just over 100 voters. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports. ESPN The Magazine – winner of the 2006 and 2003 National Magazine Award for General Excellence – is a provocative and innovative sports publication. Full of insight, analysis, impact and wit, the oversized biweekly with a circulation of 1.9 million looks ahead to give fans a unique perspective on the world of sports.

SUNYAC Honors Steve Loesch and Al Sosa

Men’s lacrosse player, Steve Loesch and retired wrestling coach, Al Sosa, were honored this spring by the SUNYAC at its annual spring meetings. Loesch received the conference’s Award of Valor while Sosa was honored with the Dr. Patrick R. Damore Distinguished Service Award. The SUNYAC Award of Valor may be presented to a coach or administrator currently associated with intercollegiate athletics, or to a current or former varsity letter winner at a SUNYAC institution who, when confronted with a life-altering situation, used perseverance, dedication and determination to overcome the event and now serves as a role model to give hope and inspiration to others in similar situations. After overcoming cancer in 2008 and the death of his father last fall, Loesch was a true inspiration and team leader for the lacrosse program. He was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 2007 and missed the entire spring semester of 2008 while undergoing aggressive chemotherapy. Fortunately, his treatment led to the control of the disease and the medical clearance to resume both his academic and athletic careers ensued. During the early months of the fall 2009 semester, as he prepared for his senior year, Loesch received a desperate phone call from home. His father, who had been his greatest source of strength through his disease and his life, had died unexpectedly. He was devastated. He once again returned home to assume the role of strength and stability that his father had always been for his mother and younger sister. Steve’s fortitude and courage through his family’s hardship was, and is, inspiring to his teammates. The team decided to honor the memory of his father with a custom memorial decal that was displayed on every player’s helmet during the 2010 season. Loesch, a native of Massapequa, N.Y. was a four-year letter winner. This spring he was a second team All-Conference selection after helping to lead the Red Dragons into the SUNYAC tournament.

Sosa, who will be officially retiring as a professor in the physical education department in December, retired as the wrestling coach at the conclusion of the 2003-04 season after spending 38 years at the helm of a program that enjoyed success in every decade that he was the head coach. He directed the program to 284 wins and 17 winning seasons from 1966-2004 while coaching 12 All-Americans, 12 wrestling Scholar All-Americans and 77 All-State wrestlers. When he retired, Sosa had the second longest tenure of any head wrestling coach in the country at any school in all divisions. Sosa’s professional honors include, induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2008 as part of the “Coaches Lifetime Service Award” program; induction into the NCAA Division III Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001 and the New York State Collegiate Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004. Sosa was the driving force behind the formation of the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Association, which has grown from six schools to nine. The ECWC has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success on the national level due in large part to Sosa’s dedication to Div. III wrestling in New York State. The athletic director at Oneonta from 1979-1995, Sosa was instrumental in starting the men’s lacrosse program, which has seen much success in recent years. As a member of the SUNYAC Governing Body he served on the following SUNYAC committees during his tenure as Athletic Director: The Constitution, Eligibility, Finance, Nominating, Tournament/Championships and as the liaison for wrestling and men’s tennis programs. Upon retirement and the sale of their home, Sosa and his wife, Doreen, plan to relocate to either Maryland or Virginia, near the D.C. area where their oldest daughter, Megan and her family live. This July, Al and Doreen will become grandparents for the second time when Megan and her husband, Jason, have their second son.

Kelsey Klopfer attends NCAA Career in Sports Forum

Senior volleyball player, Kesley Klopfer, attended the NCAA Career in Sports Forum this past spring at the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, IN. The following is her written

reflection of the event and what it meant to represent Oneonta at this event.

Attending the NCAA Career in Sports Forum was an incredible experience that I will never forget. It was packed with workshops, activities, speakers, and networking. Upon arriving in Indianapolis, I interviewed my coach, two teammates, two non-teammates, and our athletic director to gain insight on what they saw as my strengths, weaknesses, and communication skills. This helped me to better understand myself as a student, member of the volleyball team, and as a member of different organizations.

There were 400 Division I, II, and III student-athletes from all over the country. We were divided into color groups for part of the day

and for the other part of the day we were split up by track. You could have chosen either administration or coaching. I chose to complete the coaching track and was placed with the other volleyball student-athletes.

The topics that were covered were values, DISC Assessment, networking, coaching philosophy, recruiting, and budgeting. Being able to participate in the coaching track was one of the greatest experiences. Being able to work with two Division I coaches and one Division III coach was amazing. We were able to not only coach each other but also see all of the hard work coaches complete off the court, field, track, and outside of the pool. To be able to hear their perspective on the coaching process was invaluable. Most student-athletes do not understand how many hours coaches put into their sport outside of practices and competitions. Recruiting is key to building a successful program but is also very time consuming.

The DISC assessment was a beneficial tool that exhibited my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. It was uncanny how accurate the results of the assessment were. The packet was one of the most useful tools I received while at the conference. It showed the traits of other people’s personality types, and how to communicate more effectively with them. Heading to the conference I knew networking was essential for building a successful future. This was what made me most nervous especially after finding out that I was an “S,” and was someone who tended to be shyer. However, this confirmed to be a great factor because it made me step outside of my box. Even though the conference was only four days, I left Indianapolis with new tools as a leader and a coach, a better understanding of myself, and has given me an optimistic outlook for my last season at Oneonta.
