The SUNY Oneonta athletics department held its 23 rd annual awards ceremony to honor the outstanding accomplishments of its student athletes during this past year. More than 450 people attended the reception and ceremony held in the Hunt Union Ballroom on campus. During the ceremony, the athletics department honored its team Most Valuable Players along with recognizing the accomplishments of its student athletes in nine major categories that include academic, athletic, outstanding single performances and service to the department and campus. Athletes of the Year Junior Eric Fortier of the men’s soccer team and senior Sarah Timmons of the track & field team were selected as this year’s Athletes of the Year. Fortier was a starting forward for the Red Dragons and helped lead the squad to a SUNYAC championship and an appearance at the NCAA Division III national championship weekend in San Antonio last fall. The team finished with an overall record of 18-3-2 and finished with a No. 3 ranking in the final NSCAA Coaches poll. Fortier was a First Team All- Conference selection while earning SUNYAC Player of the Year honors. He was a First Team All-Region selection and earned All-American Third Team honors. Fortier led the Red Dragons with 28 points on 12 goals and four assists while also collecting a team best four game- winners. Timmons will leave an indelible mark on the track & field program when she competes for the last time at the national championships in late May. She is the greatest female Junior Sean Bernstein made men’s track & field history this spring as he became the first male to win an individual national championship in the program’s 10-year history. Bernstein set a Division III meet and SUNYAC conference record in winning the 200-me- ter dash at the NCAA Championships hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Bernstein crossed the finish line in a time of 20.80, one-tenth of a second in front of Thurgood Dennis of Wisconsin Eau Claire to win the title. The previous meet record in the event was 20.85 set in 2010 by Eric Woodruff of Moravian. The men ended the meet with 20 points and finished tied for 11th place in the final standings, which is the men’s best finish ever at the Division III championships. Bernstein’s performance highlighted a weekend where the Red Dragons had two other individuals and one relay squad com- pete at the meet. Senior Sean Wren ran a time of 52.27 and finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles to earn All-American honors for himself. “It’s a great feeling when years of hard work and sacrifice pay off and I’m able to say I’m an All American,” said Wren. “It’s been an unbelievable journey since last year and a crazy experience I’ll never forget,” said Bernstein. Bernstein, who had entered the NCAA championships with the second fastest time in Division III this spring, defeated Dennis, who had the fastest time entering the meet. His time of 21.00 seconds flat was the fastest time recorded in Thursday’s preliminary heats. The national title for Bernstein gave him his second All-American honor of the championships. Earlier in the evening, he broke his own school record in finishing as national runner up in the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.44. He was two-tenths of a second behind national champion, Dominique Kone of Colby College and three one-hundredths in front of Dennis, who ran 10.47. Head coach Matt LoPiccolo praised Bernstein’s coach Joe Reed, a seven- time All-American himself while at Oneonta. “Coach Reed is a true Red Dragon,” said LoPiccolo. “First as an athlete and now as coach of these motivated, talented student-athletes, he has continued our All-American lineage. To cap it off with a national championship is a phenomenal feeling that our team, administrators, alumni, and recruits will enjoy.” The national title for Bernstein caps an incredible year for the junior, who came back from a leg injury that took his sophomore season away. Bernstein won four individual SUNYAC titles between indoor and outdoor season and was the NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Male Track Athlete of the Year for both seasons. The national championship is the second for the men’s program and the first in the outdoor season. In 2009, the men’s program won the 4x400-meter relay at the NCAA indoor championships. Bernstein’s individual national title is the second for the track & field program overall. In 2006, Adrianne Musu Jackson-Buckner captured the 200-meter dash national championship to earn the program’s first national title. mathematics. She is a member of the volleyball team where she played in 35 of Oneonta’s 38 matches last fall. She is a tutor for the Center for Academic Development and Enrichment on campus and is a Dean’s List student. She has been inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, the National Scholarship Honor Society for freshman and Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society and, just this past month, she was inducted in Chi Alpha Sigma.

G. Hal Chase Memorial AwardThis year’s recipients of the G. Hal Chase Memorial Awards are junior Scott Bertoldo of the swimming & diving team and senior Heidi Kissinger of the lacrosse team. The award is in honor of G. Hal Chase, who served as the Athletics Director at the college and Chair of the Physical Education Department for over 40 years. The award recognizes a student athlete’s loyalty, leadership, dedication and contributions to the overall success of the athletics program. Bertoldo has been a member of the swimming & diving team for three years and, this past winter, served as one of the team captains. This past season he had career best performances at the SUNYAC championships that included breaking a nearly 40-year school record in the 200-yard breaststroke. Bertoldo is a LEAD participant on campus and is the secretary for the biology honor society of Beta Beta Beta. The President elect for SAAC next year, he has been involved campus wide and in the community with various service projects. He

spearheaded the athletics department involvement in the CANstruction event that raised money for canned goods to donate to various food pantries in Otsego county. Kissinger has been a four-year starter for the women’s lacrosse program as a midfielder and this year was a team captain. She was the team’s leader in draw controls and helped lead the program to a single season record 12 wins this spring. Kissinger served as the President of the Student Athlete Advisory Council. She has been involved in

SAAC since her freshman year and has been involved in multiple service projects that have helped increase the visibility of the athletics department. This past fall she helped coordinate a group of lacrosse players that aided in flood relief after Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee devastated the much of the Southern Tier of New York.

Single Most Outstanding Performance AwardCross country athlete, Danielle Kennedy and the men’s swimming & diving 800-yard freestyle relay took the honors of the female and male Outstanding Single Performance Awards respectively. Kennedy earned her honor after placing fifth at the SUNYAC cross country championships. Her performance earned her First Team All-Conference honors along with automatic induction into the SUNYAC cross country Hall of Fame. The foursome of junior Alex Miller, sophomore Ryan Walsh and freshmen Colton Roe and Daniel Donaghy shocked the SUNYAC when they won the 800-yard freestyle relay this past winter at the conference championships. Seeded third entering the event, they defeated both Geneseo and Cortland, both of whom had won this event the previous eight years, to capture the title.

Rounding out the awards for the year, the department recognizes the male and female team with the highest GPA as recipients of the Jay Pawa Team Academic Award. This year women’s cross country and men’s tennis were recognized for overall academic excellence.

thrower the program has produced in its 10-year history as a varsity program at the college. Timmons is a SUNYAC and school record holder. She is a multiple-time conference champion in both indoor and outdoor track & field. She is a national qualifier and is a strong contender to earn All-American honors at the NCAA outdoor championships.

Dr. Joseph Heissan ’63 Senior Achievement AwardThe Dr. Joseph Heissan ’63 Senior Achievement Award is in honor of Dr. Heissan, who was a two-sport standout athlete while he attended the college. The award goes to a senior who, was a four-year varsity athlete, has legitimate athletic and academic credentials and showed exemplary leadership, character and work ethic while a varsity athlete. This year’s recipients are Rebecca Montieth of the women’s lacrosse team and Jonathan Kowalski of the men’s soccer team. Monteith will leave the women’s lacrosse program as its greatest player. She broke

every scoring record in the history of the program, records that dated back 25 years. She is a four-time All-SUNYAC and All-Region selection and could be the program’s first All-American in a quarter century, which won’t be known until late May. Monteith became the first men’s or women’s player to eclipse 300 career points and leaves with 317. She has the single season records for goals and points along with career records in both. Kowalski was a four-year starter for the men’s soccer team and was a team captain this past fall. The team won the 2011 SUNYAC tournament and qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament, advancing all the way to the national championship weekend in San Antonio. During his career, Kowalski was a three-time All-SUNYAC selection while earning All-Region honors twice. Last year he was the Oneonta State male Athlete of the Year. This past summer, Kowalski was part of a Division III collegiate All-Star squad that traveled and competed in Brazil. Both Monteith and Kowalski earned SUNYAC All-Academic Team honors during their careers.

Fred Puritz First-Year Athlete of the Year AwardBasketball player Frankie Kelly and field hockey player Andrea Day were selected as the first-year athletes of the year. Both made immediate impacts on their respective squads and both were the Rookie of the Year in the SUNYAC. Kelly led the basketball team in scoring and assists as a rookie and started all 25 games for the Red Dragons. Kelly averaged 10.9 points and 4.3 assists per game this season while collecting 39 steals, which was second on the team. He also shot 81 percent from the free throw line, connecting on 77 of 95 attempts from the charity. Day ended her first season in a Red Dragon uniform with nine goals and two assists, which was third on the team. She was a second team All-SUNYAC selection and led the team with five game winning goals.

Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the YearThis year’s male and female Scholar Athlete of the Year awards went to junior Jared Reynolds of the cross country and track & field teams and Katie Sheehan of the volleyball team. A sociology major, Reynolds will graduate in three years from Oneonta and will begin pursuing a law degree post-graduate. He has already been accepted to law school and is currently deciding which one he will attend. Reynolds was a top-7 runner for the cross country team this past fall. He is a “Best & Brightest” student at the College and is a member of numerous honor societies. Last spring he was inducted into the National Student Athlete Honor Society of Chi Alpha Sigma and, this spring, was chosen as a recipient of a SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Sheehan is a dual major in adolescent education and
