CLOTH SHOWS HE IS STAR MATERIAL IN HARCOURT Cloth Of Stars, who had good form in what became a truncated three-year-old season, has been firing on all cylinders already this season. The four-year-old son of Sea The Stars opened his account when landing the first European Group race of the season, the Gr.3 Prix Exbury in March, and added to that with victory in the Gr.2 Prix d’Harcourt, the feature race at Chantilly yesterday. Settled in the leading pack, behind his paternal half-brother Mekhtaal, he raced keenly at times and briefly looked flat-footed as the field turned into the straight. He began to make headway and finished strongly to get up close home and win a shade cosily by a neck from Mekhtaal, with Maniaco (Galileo) a length and a half back in third.

This was the sixth win, and fifth at Group level, for the bay, who was successful in the Gr.3 Prix des Chenes at two and the Gr.3 Prix La Force and Gr.2 Prix Greffulhe last spring. He also finished third in the Gr.1 Grand Prix de Paris, having finished eighth in the Gr.1 Derby on his previous start. According to Godolphin representative Lisa-Jane Graffard, Cloth Of Stars could go for the Gr.1 Prix Ganay at Saint-Cloud, a track the horse likes, where he will also face Mekhtaal again, or travel abroad for the Gr.2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket or the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth Cup at Sha Tin.

Bred by Peter Anastasiou and bought by John Ferguson at Tattersalls, he is out of Strawberry Fledge (Kingmambo), an

(Muhtathir), with a head back to Franz Schubert, who could not quite get to the winner in time after making his run down the outside.

Graphite, as his name might suggest, a steel grey son of Shamardal, was fourth on his debut at Maisons-Laffitte in September, but returned to the course the following month to lose his maiden tag on his only starts at two. He currently holds entries in the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai de Poulains, the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club and the Gr.1 Grand Prix de Paris.

Bred by Haras de Saint Pair, from a family developed by the late Jean-Luc Lagardere, and an Arqana graduate, he is a half-brother to the Gr.2 Del Mar Derby winner and sire Fairly Ransom (Red Ransom) and the Listed Prix Finlande winner Fairly Fair (Sinndar), out of a dual Gr.3-placed full-sister to the Gr.1 Prix Ganay winner Fair Mix (Linamix).

PRIX SIGYFas (Fastnet Rock), who landed the Listed Prix Ronde de Nuit at Chantilly last month, added further lustre to his CV when taking the Gr.3 Prix Sigy. The three-year-old son of Fastnet Rock made virtually all the running and power edclear of his rivals in the closing stages to win by an ever-increasing three and a half lengths to give his sire his second Group winner of the day, following Diamond Fields’s victory in the Gr.3 Gladness Stakes at Naas. The British-trained Mrs Danvers (Ishiguru), who was unbeaten last year, was reluctant to load and showed little

Third in the Gr.3 Prix Eclipse and the Listed Prix Saraca and fourth in the Gr.2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte, Fas could be a

PRIX VANTEAUXGold Luck just got the better of her rivals Monroe Bay (Makfi) and Hebah (Sea The Stars) to take the Gr.3 Prix Vanteaux. Racing on the outside behind the leading pair, she was sent about her business 200m from home, but had to pull out all the stops to beat her rivals narrowly.

A winner on her debut at Maisons-Laffitte in September, the three-year-old daughter of Redoute’s Choice was second on her only other start at two in the Listed Prix Isonomy.

Homebred by Wertheimer et Frere and from one of their finest families, Gold Luck is a half-sister to the multiple Champion racemare Goldikova (Anabaa), the Gr.1 Prix Vermeille winner Galikova (Galileo), whose first foal Galikeo (Dansili) was narrowly beaten in a maiden earlier on the card, and the Gr.3 Prix Paul de Moussac winner, multiple Gr.1-placed and young sire Anodin (Anabaa), out of Born Gold (Blushing Groom), a full-sister to the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes and Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner Gold Splash. Their dam Riviere D’Or (Lyphard) was also a Gr.1 winner, having landed the Prix Saint-Alary.

PRIX LA FORCEGraphite upstaged his more fancied stablemate Franz Schubert (Dansili) to land the Gr.3 Prix La Force on the same card. While the latter was held up at the rear of the field after a tardy start, Graphite was settled in mid-division on the rails. He slipped through a gap between his rivals over 200m from home and stayed on strongly to score by a neck from Phelps Win

major player in the major sprint races this season, if he continues to improve and his trainer Pia Brandt has the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot as his target.

Homebred by Zalim Bifov and from a speedy family, their dam Sotka (Dutch Art) was a Listed-placed winner at two and is a half-sister to the multiple Gr.1-winning sprinter Sole Power (Kyllachy) and the Gr.3-placed two-year-old Cornus (Inchinor), who won 15 races. Also in the family are the Gr.2-winning juvenile and sire Auction House (Exbourne) and Tychonic (Last Tycoon), a multiple Graded winner of 13 races in the US.

DIAMOND RUSH DENIES ALICE SPRINGS GLADNESSDiamond Fields swooped late to claim top honours in the Gladness Stakes, one of two Gr.3 races at Naas yesterday. The contest attracted a five-strong field, with Aidan O’Brien’s triple Gr.1 winner Alice Springs (Galileo) the short-priced favourite on her seasonal reappearance. Blue De Vega (Lope De Vega) took the runners along for much of the seven-furlong journey and briefly looked to have cut loose heading inside the final quarter of a mile. However, Alice Springs battled her way to the lead close home, only to be caught by the four-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock in the shadow of the post to become her sire’s second Gr.3 winner of the day. The victory continues a fine start to the season

for trainer Fozzy Stack, who this year took over the licence from his father, Tommy.

Diamond Fields spent quite a lot of last year, racing in North America, where she was second in the Gr.2 Sands Point Stakes and third in the Lake Placid Stakes. According to her connections, she has the Gr.3 Athasi Stakes and the Gr.3 Amethyst Stakes as her possible next targets and is also likely to make further forays across the Atlantic.

Bred by Sweetman’s Bloodstock and a Goffs graduate, she is owned by top South African breeder Mary Slack and is out of the Listed-placed Question Times (Shamardal), a half-sister to the Gr.3 Sceptre Stakes winner Sunday Times (Holy Roman Emperor), from the family of the Gr.2 Hungerford Stakes winner Welsh Emperor (Emperor Jones).

ALLEGED STAKESBritish challenger Air Pilot made a winning trip to Ireland to get up close home to land the Gr.3 Alleged Stakes at Naas. Last year’s Gr.1 Derby runner-up US Army Ranger (Galileo) was the headline act in the race and Aidan O’Brien’s charge was the narrow favourite on his first start since finishing down the field in the Gr.1 Champion Stakes at Ascot last October. Success Days (Jeremy) put up a bold bid from the front, but Fran Berry delivered Ralph Beckett’s eight-year-old son of Zamindar with a well-timed challenge and the pair claimed the prize by a head, with US Army Ranger, who may have need the run, in third.

This was Air Pilot’s third win at Gr.3 level, having landed the 2015 International Stakes at the Curragh and last year’s La Coupe.

sister to the Stakes-winning chaser Wild Doc (Big Shuffle) and the third dam is a winning half-sister to the dual German Champion, multiple Gr.1 winner and leading sire Windwurf.

DERBY TRIALWindstoss put up a good performance to take the Listed Derby Trial on the same card. Tracking Novellist’s half-brother Nerud (Bernardini), the pair began to draw clear approaching the turn into the straight. The latter set sail for home, but was challenged by Windstoss, who quickened past him in the closing stages to win comfortably by two and a half lengths from Nerud, who was ten lengths clear of the third Lysistrata (Tai Chi).

The three-year-old son of Shirocco took three starts to lose his maiden tag last October and was outclassed when tried at Group level in a Gr.3 at Krefeld in November, but has clearly matured over the winter. He holds entries in the Gr.3 Bavarian Classic, the Gr.2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen, the Gr.2 Union-Rennen and the Gr.1 Deutsches Derby.

Homebred by Gestut Rottgen and a BBAG graduate, he is out of a half-sister to the Gr.1 Preis von Europa winner Well Made (Mondrian), the Listed Winterkonigin-Trial winner Weichsel (Soldier Hollow) and the Group-placed pair Whisperer (Spectrum) and Wellola (Lomitas; dam of the Gr.3 Oleander-Rennen winner Wasir).

CASAMENTO’S STAMP SETS COURSE FOR REGINA ELENAStamp Collecting provided her sire Casamento with his first Stakes winner when taking the Listed Premio Seregno, a trial for the Gr.3 Premio Regina Elena, at San Siro yesterday. The filly, who had already been placed in the Gr.3 Premio Dormello, set a slow pace under veteran jockey Mario Esposito and ran on strongly to cross the line two and three quarter lengths to the good of La Gommeuse (Zamindar), who got some black-type on only her fourth start after outbattling the dual Listed winner Mujadil Lachy (Kyllachy).

The winner will now head to the Premio Regina Elena, a race which her trainer Raffaele Biondi won three years ago when training for Scuderia Incolinx. Now Biondi has just 20 horses in his yard at San Siro and most of them shrewd purchases; Stamp Collecting cost just 6,500gns from Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and is also a Goffs graduate. She is the third foal and the first winner out of Almatlaie (Elusive Quality), a full-sister to Nasij, who won the Listed (then) Masaka Stakes and was third in the Gr.3 (then) May Hill Stakes and in the Gr.3 Princess Margaret Stakes.

Almatlaie has a two-year-old full-sister to Stamp Collecting, purchased for €7,800 by Erasmo Lo Piparo at Tattersalls Ireland September Sale, and a yearling colt by Vale Of York.

PREMIO CIRCO MASSIMOThe favourite Time To Choose had to fight all the way in the Listed Premio Circo Massimo, holding off the late charge of the veteran Refuse To Bobbin (Refuse To Bend), who ran a blinder. The four-year-old son of Manduro, bred by Razza del Velino and owned by Scuderia Effevi, was recording his second back-to-back Listed win and will go to the Gr.3 Premio Carlo d’Alessio next.

He is the second Stakes winner out of the Listed-placed Penfection (Orpen), who already produced the Listed scorer Baby Revolution (High Chaparral). Franco Raimondi

Homebred by Lady Cobham, he is a half-brother to the winners Countess Comet (Medicean), Air Squadron (Rail Link), Mistermate (Mister Baileys) and Dream Sea (Barathea). They are out of Countess Sybil (Dr Devious), a half-sister to the Gr.3 Grand Prix de Vichy winner Mint Crisp (Green Desert; dam of the Listed Rockingham Stakes winner Undeterred). The second dam is the Gr.3 (then) Park Stakes winner Countess Candy (Great Nephew).

GERMANY

WONNEMOND COMES GOOD IN FRUHJAHRSMEILEWonnemond stepped up on his efforts last year to take the Gr.3 Fruhjahrsmeile, the feature race at Dusseldorf yesterday. Settled in mid-division behind Baroncello (Medecis), his jockey Bayarsaikhan Ganbat began to look animated as the field turned into the straight. The four-year-old son of Areion started to make progress, taking the lead inside the last 200m, before staying on to score by a length.

Wonnemond may have failed to win in three starts at two, but he blossomed last year, winning five times from seven starts, including the Listed Grosser Preis des Gestut Fahrhof and a valuable BBAG sales race, and he could run next in the Gr.2 Badener Meile.

Bred by Klaus Henning Schmoock, the winner changed hands for just €9,000 as a yearling at the BBAG October Sale. He is the best of the five winners and first five foals out of the triple German scorer Windaja (Surako). The second dam won four races and is a half-

SPENDTHRIFT AUSTRALIA ADDS SWEAR AND HIT IT A BOMBSpendthrift Australia has announced two new stallions for 2017, as well as fees for its roster. Swear, a Stakes-winning son of Redoute’s Choice, and Hit It A Bomb, the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner by War Front, are new additions to the roster of five.

“This is an exciting time at Spendthrift Australia. We have a lot of big things on the horizon as we continue to grow our brand. We are particularly looking forward to standing our first colonial stallion Swear, who was a stand-out yearling at the sales for us. Swear lived up to his looks on the racetrack and we invite everyone to come out and take a look at him. You won’t be disappointed,” said Garry Cuddy, general manager at Spendthrift Australia. “We are also enthused to offer breeders a new young shuttler with serious pedigree and race record. Hit It A Bomb is a son of the world-renowned War Front and from a wonderful running family. He was a Gra.1-winning two-year-old on turf with a big turn of foot, and we believe breeders are going to really like him.”

A A$725,000 Inglis Easter yearling, Swear won on his debut as a two-year-old and was a Stakes-winning three-year-old. He captured the A$125,000 Gr.3 ATC Ming Dynasty Quality, making him the first Spendthrift Australia yearling purchase to become a Stakes winner in the farm’s colours. By legendary sire of sires Redoute’s Choice, he is out of the New Zealand Champion 2-year-old filly, Crossyourheart (Show A Heart).

Trained by Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes, he will participate in the farm’s “Share The Upside” programme at a fee of A$8,250. He will also be offered at A$5,500 (live foal).

Hit It a Bomb marks the newest shuttler set to stand at Spendthrift Australia. He became the lone Breeders’ Cup winner for War Front when he overcame a wide draw to win the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland.

Trainer Fozzy Stack’s fine season continued with Diamond Fields (Fastnet Rock) swooping from last to first in the closing stages to deny last season’s triple Gr.1 winner Alice Springs (Galileo), with the front-running Blue De Vega (Lope De Vega) in what looked a strong renewal. Twice placed at Gr.2 level in the US last year, the winner holds entries next month in both the Athasi Stakes and Amethyst Stakes, both Gr.3 contests, and may return Stateside during the summer.

The winner is the first foal out of Question Times (Shamardal), a winner over six furlongs and second in the Listed Bosra Sham Fillies’ Stakes, and a half-sister to the Gr.3 Sceptre Stakes winner and Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes-second Sunday Times (Holy Roman Emperor). The second dam Forever Times (So Factual) is a winning half-sister to the Gr.2 Hungerford Stakes winner and Gr.1 Prix de la Foret-second Welsh Emperor (Emperor Jones), the Listed Abergwaun Stakes winner Majestic Times (Bluebird) and the Gr.3-placed Brave Prospector (Oasis Dream). The next dam Simply Times (Dodge) is a half-sister to the Gardenia Breeders’ Cup Stakes winner Bucky’s Baby (Buckaroo).

Question Times also has a two-year-old colt by Camelot in training with Joseph O’Brien, and a yearling filly by the same sire (115,000gns Tattersalls December Foal Sale by Margaret O’Toole) and visited Zoffany last year.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien and bred by Evie Stockwell, he was undefeated in three runs in Ireland and America as a two-year-old. Out of the Stakes-winning Sadler’s Wells mare Liscanna, he is a full-brother to the Gr.1 winner Brave Anna, a leading two-year-old filly last season in Europe and 2016 Cartier nominee for Champion Two-Year-Old Filly.

For commercial breeders, he will stand for a fee of A$8,800, as a participant in Spendthrift’s “Breed Secure” programme. He will also be offered for A$8,800 (live foal).

Cloth Of Stars followed up his impressive victory in last month’s Gr.3 Prix Exbury, scything past his rivals in the home straight to head Mekhtaal in the final strides. Successful in last year’s Gr.2 Prix Greffulhe and Gr.3 Prix La Force and the Gr.3 Prix des Chenes as a juvenile, the bay is one of 20 Graded/Group winners by Gilltown Stud’s 2009 World Champion Sea The Stars, the five to have triumphed at the highest level including the Classic aces Harzand, Sea The Moon and Taghrooda.

Cloth Of Stars is the third foal of Strawberry Fledge, who previously produced the useful Warrior Of Light to High Chaparral and has a yearling filly by War Command. A full-sister to the 2007 Gr.1 Oaks heroine Light Shift and the Listed-placed Erewhon, Strawberry Fledge is by Kingmambo out of Lingerie. A daughter of Shirley Heights and Northern Dancer’s 1984 Gr.1 Prix de Diane and Gr.1 Prix Vermeille queen Northern Trick, Lingerie also produced the Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup heroine Shiva and Gr.2 Prix Foy scorer Limnos to Hector Protector, the Gr.1 Charles Whittingham Handicap runner-up Hyades to Aldebaran and the Listed Prix Solitude victrix Burning Sunset to Caerleon. In turn, Light Shift produced the Gr.3 Gordon Stakes scorer Ulysses to Galileo and Shiva this month’s Listed victrix That Which Is Not to Elusive Quality, while Burning Sunset is the dam of Smart Strike’s Gr.2 Prix d’Harcourt scorer Smoking Sun, Henrythenavigator’s Listed winner Zhiyi and Pivotal’s Gr.3 Prix d’Aumale runner-up Ikat, the latter of whom produced the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Turf ace Main Sequence to Aldebaran. Another of Lingerie’s daughters, Molasses produced Haras de Treban’s Gr.3 Prix d’Hedouville victor Magadan to High Chaparral. ALASTAIR NICOLSON

This was a third win at Gr.3 level for Air Pilot (Zamindar) and a second in Ireland, following a rather hollow success in the 2015 International Stakes at the Curragh, but an assertive victory in the La Coupe at Chantilly last year. Well-produced by Fran Berry, the eight-year-old got up close home to deny the front-running Success Days (Jeremy), with the favourite US Army Ranger (Galileo) only third on ground probably plenty soft enough, given the first two home are proven soft-ground performers.

Air Pilot is much the best performer bred by Countess Sybil (Dr Devious) a winner over 14 furlongs and a half-sister to the Gr.3 Grand Prix de Vichy winner Mint Crisp (Green Desert; dam of Listed Rockingham Stakes winner Undeterred). The second dam is the Gr.3 (then) Park Stakes winner Countess Candy (Great Nephew), a half-sister to the minor US Stakes winner and Gr.3 Brownstown Stakes-second Countess Tully (Hotfoot), ancestress of the Gr.1 Oaks-third Crown Of Light (Mtoto) The next dam Zoomie (Pinza) also produced the Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas-second Intimidate (Formidable).

The bay thus became the ninety-fifth Graded/Group winner by Arrowfield Stud’s Australian Champion Three-Year-Old and Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice, 30 of whom have triumphed at the highest level.

Gold Luck is the 15th foal of Born Gold, who previously produced the triple Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Mile queen Goldikova and Haras du Quesnay’s runner-up in that race, Anodin, to Anabaa, the Gr.1 Prix Vermeille heroine and Gr.1 Prix de Diane-second Galikova to Galileo, the Gr.3 Prix Cleopatre victrix Gold Round and the Gr.3 Prix de la Grotte-third Born Something to Nijinsky’s son Caerleon and the Gr.3 Prix de Guiche scorer Gold Sound and the same race’s runner-up Red Tune to Nijinsky’s grandson Green Tune, Nijinsky being the sire of Redoute’s Choice’s grandam.
