World soil day - Kisan sammelan

World soil day and Kisan sammelan were organ-ized at University Head Quarters on 05.12.2015 by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Venkataramanna-gudem. Sri. Magantti Venkateswara Rao (Babu), Hon’ble MP of Eluru, Sri. Ganni Veeranjaneyulu, MLA, Ungutur and Sri. Mullapudi Bapiraju, ZP Chairman, West Godavari district, Dr.B.M.C.Reddy, Vice-Chancellor, all the Univer-sity Officers, Scientists and public representatives partici-pated in the programme. On that day Milch animal shed constructed at KVK instructional farm was inaugurated by Sri Magantti Venkateswara Rao(Babu) garu, Hon’ble MP, Eluru. Soil testing lab at KVK was inaugurated by Sri G.Veeranjaneyulu, MLA, Unguturu. An Exhibition was organ-ized during the occasion by involving Research Stations, KVKs, State line departments and input agencies. Dr.B.M.C.Reddy, Vice-Chancellor explained about the impor-tance of soil health and measures to improve soil health. Soil health cards prepared by analyzing soil samples for N,P,K, EC, Zn, Ca, Mg and Fe were distributed to 250 farmers by the dignitaries. Two millet based backery units, 20 Coconut climbing devices were also distributed to the trainees by the guests. Neem and Pongamia soap formulations for agricul-ture use prepared by KVK, Venkataramannagudem with technical support from IIHR, Bengaluru were also launched on the occasion. Two technical booklets titled “Chirudhanyalatho Poshakahara utpathulu” and “Bhusara Adharitha Poshaka Yajamanyam” published by Dr.R.V.S.K.Reddy, Director of Extension were also released.

RAWEP activities

RAWEP students conducted exhibition on different models of kitchen gardening, vermicomposting, protected cultivation, plant protection and live specimens of various horticultural crops at Obulavaripalli and Kammapalli villages on 04-12-2015. Dr. K. Gopal, Associate Dean, HCRI, Anantharajupeta, Dr. Ch. Ruth, Associate Dean Representative, Dr. K. Swarajya Lakshmi, Associate Professor (Hort.), Dr. K. Nagaraju, Asst. Professor (Hort.), Dr. M. Ramaiah, Asst. Professor(Ento) and Dr. M. Raja Naik, Asst. Professor (Hort.) participated in the programmes.

RAWEP students conducted farmers’ training along with an exhibi-tion on 14-12-2015 at Jayampu village, Nellore district. This meeting was presided over by Dr.K.Gopal, Associate Dean, HCRI, Anantharajupeta. Dr. B. Govindarajulu, Sr. Scientist (Pl.Pathology), CRS, Petlur, Dr. B. Pratap, Scientist (Agronomy) and Dr. K. Nagaraju, Asst. Professor (Hort.) participated in the programme.

RAWEP students allotted to CRS, Tirupati organised farmers’ train-ing along with an exhibition at Mallaiahpalli and Gollapalli villages on 7thand 8th, December, 2015 respectively. Dr. K T. Venkata Ramana, Principal Scientist(Hort) & Head, Dr. L. Mukundalakshmi, Scientist (Hort), Smt. G. Sarada, Scientist- Incharge, Dr. T. Rajasek-haram, Scientist (Pl. Path) and Smt. G. Tanuja Sivaram, PR from HC&RI, Anantharajupeta attended the programmes and interacted with the farmers.

RAWEP students allotted to HRS, Lam organised ‘Rythu Sadassu’ at Pedavadlapudi on 01.12.2015. Dr.M.L.N.Reddy, Dean of Horticul-ture, Dr.A.Sujatha, Associate Dean, Dr.L.Naram Naidu, Zonal Head, Dr.V.Vijaya Bhaskar, Associate Professor and Scientists of HRS, Lam attended the programme.

Vice-chancellor’s visit Dr.B.M.C. Reddy, Vice Chancellor visited HC&RI, Ananatharajupeta on 2nd December, 2015 and interacted with teaching staff on various issues. Dr. K.Gopal, Associate Dean and Dr.K.T.Venkata Ramana, Zonal Head (Rayalaseema Zone) explained about ongoing activities in the campus.

Education

Exposure visits Dr. M. Ramaiah, Asst. Professor (Ento), Smt. T. Nagalakshmi, Scientist (Pl. Pathology), Smt. K. Sarada, Scientist (Ento), Sri. M. Balaksrishna, Asst. Professor (Soil Science) and Dr. V. Pratap, Scientist (Agronomy) along with RAWEP students visited Heritage Foods Dairy unit at Kasipentla and mixed granule fertilizer indus-try at Panabakam, Chittoor district on 05-12-2015.

Dr. V. Sudha Vani, Asst. Professor (Hort.), Dr. R. V. Sujatha, Asst. Professor(Agricultural Economics) and Smt. K. Usha Kumari Asst. Professor (Hort.) arranged an exposure visit to 3rd year B.Sc (Hons. ) Horticulture, M.Sc (Fruit Science) and M.Sc (PHT) first year students to Jyothirmayi Fruit Processing Company at Annavaram village to show processing and canning of guava pulp. And also visisted M/s. Charoen Pokphand Seeds India (Pvt.) Ltd, Nuzvid, Krishna dist to show seed processing on 08-12-2015

Dr. T. Suseela, Asst. Professor (Hort.), Dr. R. V. Sujatha, Assis-tant Professor(Agricultural Economics) and Sri. K. Venkata Subbaiah, Teaching Associate arranged an exposure visit to 3rd year B.Sc(Hons.), Horticulture and M. Sc.(Floriculture) first year students to show various ornamental plants at different nurseries in Kadiam on 11-12-2015.

Research

Diagnostic visits

Dr. Y. Sireesha, Research Associate, Horticultural Research Station, Ananthapuramu visited bacterial blight infected pomegranate garden at Danduvaripalli village on 01-12-2015 and suggested suitable control measures to the farmer.

Dr. B. Srinivasulu, Senior Scientist (Hort.) & Head, Horticultural Research Station, Ananthapuramu visited bacterial blight infected pomegranate garden of Sri. B. Ramaiah, Katiganikaluva, Ananthapu-ramu on 02-12-2015 and suggested suitable control measures.

Research findings

In an observational trial on passion fruit at Horticultural Research Station, Anantharajupet flowering and fruitset started in the month of September. Following parameters were recorded viz., average fruit weight- 87.38 gm, diameter of fruit- 62.24 mm, length- 61.83 mm, TSS- 14.5O brix, pulp weight-38.57 g and peel weight of 48.73g.

Dr. B. Srinivasulu, Senior Scientist (Hort.) & Head, Horticultural Research Station, Ananthapuramu distributed plant material of dryland fruit crops and inputs to the beneficiaries to provide nutritional security under Bioversity project.

Extension Awareness programmes

Dr. R.V.S.K. Reddy, Director of Extension along with Dr. E. Karuna sree, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, Venkataramannagudem participated in awareness programme on NHB schemes to SC & ST farmers and tribal women, and also participated in “Millet bakery products” training on 09.12.2015 at K.R.Puram. Met Sri. Shan Mohan, IAS, Project Officer, ITDA, K.R.Puram and dis-cussed about Collaborative programmes by KVK, Venkatara-mannagudem through ITDA. Proposal for supply of Kitchen garden kits and improved backyard poultry birds was also discussed.

Dr.A.Srinivas, Senior Scientist & Head, Sri V.Govardhan Rao, SMS(Pl.Pathology), Dr.K.Ravi Kumar, SMA (Hort.), KVK, Pandirimamidi attended one day awareness programme about NHB schemes for ST & SC farmers sponsored by National Hor-ticulture Board and organized by ITDA, Rampachodavaram. Sri V.Govardhan Rao, SMS (Pl.Pathology) delivered a lecture on ‘Cashew and mango cultivation’. Dr. K.Ravi Kumar, SMA (Hort.) delivered lecture on ‘Production technology of tomato’.

Vocational trainings

A three day vocational training programme on “Millet based Bakery Products” for 30 tribal women was conducted by Dr.E.Karunasree, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, Venkataraman-nagudem from 05th to 07th December,2015. In this programme the tribal women were trained in preparation of biscuits and other bakery items like puffs, cakes etc. Dr. B. Srinivasulu, Reg-istrar participated as chief guest for the valedictory pro-gramme and distributed the certificates and resource material useful for making millet based recipes and bakery products. Participants expressed their confi-dence for taking it as livelihood activity by preparation of millet products and supplying to tribal welfare schools with the support of KVK, Venkataramannagudem and ITDA, K.R.Puram.

A vocational training programme on “Friends of Coconut Tree(FoCT)” from 01st to 06th December, 2015 was conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Venkataramannagudem. Twenty participants were trained on use of palm climbing device, production and protection aspects of

Vocational training for coconut climbers (XI batch) under “Friends of Coconut Tree” sponsored by Coconut Development Board for twenty climbers started from 14-12-2015 at Horticultural Research Station, Ambajipeta.

Training programmes A training on production technology of chilli and turmeric to the field scouts was conducted by Scientists of Horticultural Research Station, Lam in collobaration with Spices Board on 11-12-2015 at HRS, Lam.

Field and Diagnostic visits

Dr.A.Srinivas, Senior Scientist & Head, Sri. V. Govardhan Rao, SMS (Plant Pathology), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Pandirimamidi visited Rajma demonstration plots at Gurthedu village of Mare-dumilli mandal on 02.12.2015 and suggested suitable package of practices including micronutrient sprays to obtain higher yields. Dr.A.Srinivas, Senior Scientist & Head, Sri.V.Govardhan Rao, SMS (Plant Pathology), Dr.K.Ravi Kumar, SMA (Horticulture), Sri P.V.Ramana, SMA (SSAC), KVK, Pandirimamidi visited sor-ghum demo plots at Kothagudem, Pedduru, D.N.Palem villages of Devipatnam mandal on 03.12.2015 along with Dr.J.V.Prasad, Principal Scientist, ATARI (ZPD), Hyderabad. He has interacted with farmers and NGO’s and discussed the gaps for higher yields in sorghum and area expansion in agency area.

Cluster frontline demonstrations on blackgram Dr.A.Srinivas, Senior Scientist & Head, Sri.V.Govardhan Rao, SMS (Plant Pathology), Dr.K.Ravi Kumar, SMA (Horticulture), Sri P.V.Ramana, SMA (SSAC), KVK, Pandirimamidi visited Blackgram demonstration plots at Amudalabanda village of Gangavaram mandal on 03.12.2015 along with Dr.J.V.Prasad, Principal Scien-tist, ATARI (ZPD), Hyderabad. He suggested management prac-tices for Bean Yellow Mosaic Virus (BYMV) and Maruca pod borer.

Dr.A.Srinivas, Senior Scientist & Head, Sri. V.Govardhan Rao, SMS (Plant Pathology), Dr.K.Ravi Kumar, SMA, (Horticulture), KVK, Pandirimamidi and Sri B.Srinivasulu, PHO, ITDA, Rampa-chodavaram, Sri G.Ramesh, H.O, Rampachodavaram visited Chilli fields at Nellipaka, Nandigam, and Kunavaram on 09.12.2015. The problems identified were gall midge and viral diseases in chilli. Suitable measures to control white flies, thrips and aphids which act as vectors for transmitting viral diseases were suggested to the farmers.

Smt.T.Vijaya Lakshmi, Scientist(Pl.Pathology), Dr.C.Venkata Ramana, Scientist(Hort.) and Dr.K.Sireesha, Scientist (Entomology), Horticultural Research Station, Lam visited chilli fields around Ravipadu and Prattipadu villages along with Well Grown Spices Pvt. Ltd on 9-12-2015 and suggested suitable control measures for the problems identified.

Dr.C.Sarada, Sr. Scientist(Hort), Horticultural Research Station, Lam visited chilli fields of crop failure at Karampudi along with officers of Department of Agriculture on 14-12-2015.

Field diagnostic visit

Dr. M. Raja Naik, Asst. Professor (Horticulture) and Dr. M. Ramaiah, Asst. Professor (Entomology), Horticultural College & Research Institute, Anantharajupet visited pomegranate and papaya fields in

Vepulabailu (Piler mandal), Boyapalli (Valmikipuram mandal), Kondavand-lapalli, Kuravapalli, Bedavaripalli (Nimmanapalli mandal), Chittoor dis-trict on 6-12-2015 and observed nutrient deficiencies, aphids, pome-granate butterfly and bacterial leaf blight in pomegranate. Nutrient deficiencies, ring spot virus and foot rot in papaya. Suitable remedial

measures were suggested to the farmers. Dr. M. Ramaiah, Asst. Professor (Entomology), Dr.K.Swarajya Lak-shmi, Associate Professor (Horticulture), Dr. T. Naga Lakshmi, Scien-tist (Plant Pathology), HC&RI, Anantharajupet visited papaya fields of Obanapalli, Singinavaripalli, Bayannapalli villages of Kadapa dis-trict on 10-12-2015 and observed collar rot in papaya, sigatoka leaf spot & rhizome rot in banana. Suitable control measures were sug-gested to the farmers for control of above diseases.

Dr. D. Srinivasa Reddy, Scientist (Entomology), Horticultural Research Station, Anantharajupet visited B. Kammapalli village on 09.12.2015 and observed damping off in papaya nursery and rec-ommended application of Trichoderma harzianum

Dr. D. Srinivasa Reddy, Scientist (Entomology), Horticultural Research Station, Anantharajupet visited banana field at Bommava-ram village on 11.12.2015 and observed sigatoka leaf spot, recom-mended spraying of Propiconazole 25EC @ 1ml/L + Mineral oil @10ml/litre of water(Banole®)

Smt. T. Naga Lakshmi, Scientist (Plant Pathology) conducted survey on papaya diseases and inspected flood affected papaya fields in Obanapalli, Bayanpalli and Singirivaripalli on 9.12.2015. All young papaya gardens (< one month old) were severely affected with root and collar rots caused by Pythium and Phytophthora due to continuous rains and floods received during the month of November. The incidence of root and collar rots was severe which completely devastated the papaya fields in Koduru and Chitvel mandals of Kadapa district. Farmers were suggested to go for banana as alternate crop to reduce further spread of soil borne diseases.

Venkata Ramana, Zonal Research Head(Rayalaseema Zone) along with Scientists of Horticultural Research Station, Anantharajupet visited proposed land for AICRP on fruits at Settigunta, Kadapa District on 03. 12. 2015. Dr. B.M.C.Reddy. Vice-Chancellor and Dr. J. Dilip Babu, Director of Re-search visited Citrus Research Station, Tirupati and reviewed on-going research programmes. And given suggestions for proper execution and further strengthening of research.

Kisan mela

Dr. B. Srinivasulu, Senior Scientist & Head, Horticultural Research Station, Anantapuramu attended KisanMela and addressed the farm-ers on the eve of World Soil Day celebrations at KVK, Reddipalli on 05-12-2015. An exhibition stall was also arranged by Horticultural Re-search Station, Ananthapuram which was visited by several farmers and dignitaries.

World Human Rights Day

World Human Rights Day was celebrated on 10-12-2015 at HC&RI, Anantharajupet. Dr.K.Gopal, Associate Dean inaugurated the meet-ing and given his message to the teachers and students. Teaching staff, non-teaching staff and students participated in the event and shared their views on human rights.
