Dr. Jinichi Tokeshi, a highly respected family physician based in Honolulu, is the winner of the Gold Excellence in Kupuna Care Award for his exemplary performance keeping patients healthy and out of the emergency room. Dr. Tokeshi, who has been in practice for more than 30 years, received the highest honor out of 200 MDX Hawai`i primary care physicians. Born in Okinawa, Japan, he is also fluent in Japanese and speaks several other languages. Dr. Tokeshi is affiliated with Kuakini Medical Center. He received his medical degree from John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), University of Hawaii, and completed his residency in family medicine at Michigan State University. Since returning from his residency training in 1978, he has been on faculty at JABSOM, where he presently serves as a clinical professor of family medicine and geriatrics. Data on Dr. Tokeshi’s patients show that only 5% of them have utilized the emergency room in the last 12 months, as compared to 16% for the MDX Hawai`i senior population overall. This is clearly the result of the remarkable access to quality care that Dr. Tokeshi provides his patients.
