• PHRL 4130 (Course Coordinator) – Pharmaceutics Compounding Laboratory (PharmD):

The course is a compounding laboratory for the basic pharmaceutical formulations that can be prepared and dispensed in a pharmacy setting. Preparation and dispensing of pharmaceutical solutions, emulsions, suspensions, semi-‐solids, and solid dosage forms are also studied in the laboratory.

• PHA-‐5993 (Course Faculty) -‐ Literature Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences (PharmD):

This course provides students with an opportunity to work under the direct supervision of one or more faculty members. Students will be assigned directed readings, evaluations, and analysis of scientific literature in the fields of pharmacology, pharmaceutics, biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical technology, biotechnology, toxicology and others. Students will be mentored and trained on how to retrieve scientific information, build a hypothesis, write papers, and write reviews.

• PHRP 7214 (Course Coordinator) – Industrial Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology

(PhD): This course provides students with the principles of pharmaceutical processing such as filtration, milling, mixing, drying and compression of pharmaceutical solids. It also deals with the production and quality control of tablet, capsules, liquid dosage forms, semisolid dosage forms and sterile products. Coverage includes the science of packaging


materials, production management, quality assurance and regulations in the pharmaceutical industry such as validation, good manufacturing practice (GMP) and FDA guidelines for stability of pharmaceutical dosage forms.

• PHRP 7228 (Course Coordinator) – Principles of Pharmaceutical Analysis (PhD): This course does explore the fundamentals of pharmaceutical analysis. This includes the principles of pharmaceutical analysis techniques and their applications in the pharmaceutical research and development (both academic and industrial). It is crafted to provide students a solid conceptual ground to understand how a particular analytical technique works. It is designed to enable students to critically evaluate instrumentation choices when needed and to select the appropriate tools.

• PHRP 7212 (Course Faculty) – Advances in Drug Delivery (PhD): This course discusses the current information on the science and technology of novel drug delivery and delivery platforms and systems. Emphasizes the development and evaluation of controlled and targeted drug delivery systems based on physiochemical properties of the therapeutic agent and pharmacokinetics. Gene and protein delivery will be discussed. Also, non-‐invasive routes of administration ad drug delivery will be included as well in this course. Coverage includes material on the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of advanced drug delivery over traditional methods. Recent advances in drug delivery will be presented and discussed from the literature.

• PHRP 7204 (Course Faculty) – Research Techniques and Instrumentation (PhD): This

lecture course will augment the student’s rotation experiences with a broad vie of state of the art technologies and instruments commonly used in pharmaceutical sciences research. It will allow the student to read the literature with greater understanding as methodological terminology begins to have more meaning. It is meant to be a broad survey of technologies, not provide a deep background in any specific technology. In addition it will reiterate the scientific method in the context of experimental design especially in the context of IACUC and IB construction.

• PHRP 7004 (Course Faculty) – Advanced Physical Pharmacy (PhD): This course presents

application of underlying physical principles to formulate and to develop various pharmaceutical products. The course describes physical principles in both solid and non-‐solid states. The students will learn how basic physical principles are applied in development of current and novel pharmaceutical solids, semi-‐solids, homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. Moreover, the course describes the importance, properties and application of different polymer systems, new drug carriers and rheology modifiers in developing current and novel dosage forms. Drug stability and solubility, and approaches to enhance the solubility of the poorly soluble drugs will also be discussed.

course is focused on discussing and learning to prepare various extemporaneously compounded dosage forms while fulfilling all legal requirements. The calculations laboratory provides students with experience in weighing, measuring, preparing, dissolving, diluting, and other practical experiences that are necessary for dispensing and compounding. The knowledge gained in Pharmaceutics-‐I and Pharmaceutical calculations is essential for completing laboratory exercises.

• PHE 1056 PH 2E (Course Coordinator) -‐ Evaluation of Scientific Literature Elective (PharmD): This course provides students with thorough understanding of art of good scientific writing. Several examples of peer-‐reviewed articles from renowned journals (Cell, Nature, Science, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Pharmaceutical Research, etc.) will be discussed. The students will be asked to, write an abstract for an article, write conclusions and/or write a whole paper with the given set of data. The students will be graded on how well they write and present ideas.

• PHS1001 (Course Faculty) -‐ Introduction to Pharmaceutical Sciences (PharmD): This

course is optimally designed for first year pharmacy students to teach them basic concepts and topics about the basic chemistry, physical-‐chemical properties of drugs, cell structure, the role and influence of acid/base theory, and bioenergetics and thermodynamics to drugs and pharmaceutical systems. The deficiency in acid/base, fluid, electrolyte and their clinical correlation will be emphasized too. This course also integrates important concepts from the physical pharmacy areas of specialization to illustrate design and development of traditional drug-‐dosage forms as well as novel pharmaceutical delivery systems used currently in pharmacy practice.

• PCC1009 (Course Faculty) -‐ Pharmaceutics-‐II (PharmD): This course provides students

with a qualitative and quantitative overview of drug absorption, disposition and the processes important to disposition, namely, distribution, metabolism and excretion (DME). It is anticipated that students will learn how to calculate various pharmacokinetic parameters that are important to the therapeutic use of drugs. Finally, by understanding and calculating the impact of various factors on drug absorption and disposition, students will develop an understanding of how therapeutic dosing may be modified.

Current FDA approved biotechnology drugs such as human insulin; growth hormones and interferons are also discussed.
