RattanLal,Ph.D., isaDistinguishedUniversityProfessorofSoilScienceandDirectoroftheCarbonManagementandSequestrationCenter,TheOhioStateUniversity,andanAdjunctProfessorofUniversityofIceland.With completion of education from Punjab Agricultural University,Ludhiana(B.Sc,1963), IndianAgriculturalResearch Institute,NewDelhi(M.Sc,1965),andtheOhioStateUniversity,Columbus(Ph.D,1968),heserved as Sr. Research Fellowwith the University of Sydney, Australia(1968-69),SoilPhysicistatIITA,Ibadan,Nigeria(1969-87),andProfessorof Soil Science at OSU (1987-to date). His current research focus is on climate-resilientagriculture, soil carbon sequestration, sustainable intensification, enhancing use efficiency ofagroecosystems,andsustainablemanagementofsoilresourcesofthetropics.HeisafellowoftheAmericanSocietyofAgronomy (ASA,1985),SoilScienceSocietyofAmerica (SSSA,1986),Third World Academy of Sciences (1992), American Association for the Advancement ofSciences (1996), Soil andWater Conservation Society (SWCS,1997), Indian Natl. Academy ofAgricultural Sciences (1998), and Rothamsted, U.K. (2013). He received the Hugh HammondBennett Award of the SWCS, 2005; Borlaug Award (2005), and Liebig Award (2006) of theInternationalUnionofSoilSciences,M.S.SwaminathanAward(India)of2009,andCOMLANDAward (Germany, 2009).
