MENTORING Student Mentees: Erin Richards, Gloria Maciorowski, Molly Geraghty, Shanice Cox, Keith Mesidor, William Kim, and Minjung Cha (Graduated May 2014). Students in my Cancer Neurocognitive Translational Research Lab (Jean-Pierre Lab) are involved in many aspects of cancer control and survivorship research program. These students are specifically involved in literature review, discussion of research ideas, literature reviews, data acquisition (including administration of questionnaires and psychometrically validated psychological and neuropsychological tests, physiological data acquisition such as brain neuronal activities, basic vital signs) and management, as well as administration of computerized cognitive training program, and biofeedback/neurofeedback therapy. These students are also training in the application of optical imaging spectroscopy to examine cognitive-task based brain activation for cancer patients and survivors. Students in the Jean-Pierre Lab have also presented research findings at local and competitive national oncology conferences (e.g., American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Preventive Oncology) and are working on various cancer-related papers that will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed medical journals. TEACHING University of Notre Dame (Fall 2013 – Present):

§ Health Psychology: Theory, Research & Practice. This course is designed to introduce students to the field of health psychology research and practice. In this course, students examine how biological, psychological, behavioral and social factors influence health, disease development and progression (e.g., cancer, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease), and treatment outcomes. Students in this course review current research and issues in applied health psychology in biomedical settings. Students actively participate in the conceptualization and development of a health psychology intervention protocol to impact a chronic disease (e.g., cancer, diabetes, and cardiac failure) or behavioral/lifestyle risk factors (e.g., diet, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and smoking).

University of Notre Dame, Upcoming seminar (Spring 2015):

§ Applied Behavioral Oncology Research. The overarching goal of this seminar is to introduce students to the field of cancer control and survivorship research. In this seminar, we will specifically examine issues related to the assessment and management of biobehavioral and psychosocial adverse effects of cancer and its treatments (e.g., cancer and treatment-related neurocognitive dysfunction, fatigue, psychological distress, pain, nausea and emesis, and sleep dysfunction). Students will learn to critically evaluate the biobehavioral oncology research literature and will acquire important skills in the conceptualization, development and implementation of clinical research to improve quality of life for patients and survivors.
