About the CollegeGuru Nanak College of Arts, Science and Commerce is one of the many educational institutions established by Guru Nanak Vidyak Society. Guided by the principles of purity, truth, charity and peace, the Sikh management established the college in 1989. The aim of this society in establishing the college is to reach out to the educational needs of the people in the vicinity of the college and also to fulfill the needs of the ever growing population of the city. The college has been sanctioned as Community College by UGC. A number of National and International Conferences have been organized by College.
About the ConferenceThe living organisms with their diverse way of survival have attracted the attention of scientists. Amongst these, fungi being a major component have various roles of useful and destructive kinds. They play an important role in conservation of ecosystem. Fungal diversity helps mankind for various beneficial aspects like health, food, environment etc. There are 1.5 million species of fungi worldwide, making fungi the second largest group of organisms after insects. Fungi are principal agents that decompose cellulose and lignin, the primary components of wood. Use of fungi to remediate environmental pollution is a recent approach. Fungi are tremendously important to humans because of the diseases they cause to economically important plants. Many new approaches in this regard require a complete knowledge of the biology and life histories of plant pathogens. Research on plant specific mycorrhizal fungi and its application to crop plants can increase the yield.Besides simply spoiling foods, certain fungi also produce mycotoxins particularly ochratoxins or aflatoxins produced on cereals and nuts. Afltoxins have been found to be most potent carcinogenic compounds. In recent years, effective immunosuppressant compounds like cyclosporin, drug for cancer treatment- taxol, cortisone, ergosterol, various enzymes and organic acids, plant growth regulators etc are obtained from fungi. The Department of Botany, in collaboration with Mycological Society of India (Mumbai unit) proposes to conduct a two-day National Conference on “Fungal Diversity and their Applications”
Objectives of ConferenceThe scope of this conference is wide enough, which will enable participants from different fields like Botany, Zoology, Life-sciences, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology etc. to present their research work. The conference will have a number of lead lectures. The research students will get updated information from the Scientists. It will generate interest amongst the student and teaching community in the field of fungi. People from industry may develop collaborations with the academicians.
