A Year in Review—2015 The last several years have been tumultuous times for the Dr. Garabed A. Fattal Community

Free Clinic. Implementation of the Affordable Care Act in 2012 and the creation of the New York State of Health resulted in an overall decline in people seeking care and a shift in the services needed. Nationwide, free and charitable clinics saw a shift in patient needs and a decline in financial donations. Some clinics opted to change their business structure to stay afloat; some closed. In the wake of these realities, we recognized the ship needed to be righted to make it through these rough seas. One reality guided our efforts – the need continues for a clinic where people without health insurance can receive quality, affordable health care.

Patient feedback guided our understanding about the changes that were needed. Beyond the physician visit and medication for their illness or chronic health condition, patients clearly needed information and assistance to explore health insurance options. Average census, trends in patient visits, patient demographics and other information focused our efforts. To right the ship, services were added, hours of operation reduced, and outreach efforts increased.

Through all, the Clinic remained true to its missions. Primary care services were provided to 590 patients in 1195 visits. Patients received medication valued at $193,000 through pharma-ceutical programs in addition to $55,019 in medications dispensed to patients. Toiletries and OTC medications valued at $57,688 were distributed. Consistent with the educational mission, 24 residents and 37 medical students trained at the Clinic along with 5 students from other health fields. Almost all patients received information about health insurance resulting in 101 patients obtaining insurance. We could not have done it without your continuous, generous support. Today the Clinic remains a place where community members can receive health care at no cost to them. Addi-tionally, the Clinic staff facilitates peoples’ efforts to find affordable health insurance. The transi-tion was challenging. The end result is a clinic responsive to the current needs of those seeking our services. We are very grateful to the many people who supported the Clinic through choppy waters this past year. Thank you.

The Free Clinic screens patients for eligibility for various health insur-

ance programs such as Medicaid, The Essential Plan and health insur-

ance plans available through the New York State of Health Marketplace

Exchange. Patients are able to meet and setup appointments with facili-

tating enrollers that are able to assist them with signing up for health

insurance programs for which they are eligible.

Patient Assistance Program The Patient Assistance Program provides patients with free access to

brand-name prescription medications as well as medications that may

Direct Relief Network and the National

Association of Free Clinics

Direct Relief Network is a non-

profit, nonpartisan organization

that provides medical assistance

to people around the world who

have been affected by poverty,

natural disasters, and civil unrest.

The Garabed A. Fattal Commu-

nity Free Clinic has partnered

with Direct Relief Network, and

through them we receive medica-

tions and medical supplies for

our patients. Between January 1,

2015, and December 31, 2015,

Direct Relief provided the clinic

with medicine and medical

supplies valued at $57,688.22.

Founded in 2001 and headquar-

tered in Washington, D.C.; the

NAFC is an effective advocate for

the issues and concerns of Free

and Charitable Clinics, their vol-

unteer workforce of doctors, den-

tists, nurses, therapists, pharma-

cists, nurse practitioners, techni-

cians and other health care pro-

fessionals, and the patients served

by Free and Charitable Clinics in

communities throughout the na-

tion.
