Monday, February 10, 6 p.m. • FreeLatinos are underrepresented among elected officials at state and local levels and are disproportionally underrepresented in academia and in administrative and executive positions at all levels of government. As a result, issues most important to the Latino population do not always come to the forefront in the development of public policy. These Latino panelists will discuss how leadership is fostering change:

Series Host & ModeratorMichael Brophy, Ph.D., M.F.A.Michael Brophy has served as the President of Marymount California University since 2006. Dr. Brophy has held leadership positions at the University of Wisconsin, the State University of New York and Long Island University and has taught and led research in the U.S., Europe and Cuba. Dr. Brophy represented the U.S. with a Fulbright assignment in Bulgaria. His films have been screened at film festivals, universities and foundations around the world, and he continues to perform at the piano with students and faculty. Dr. Brophy earned degrees at the College of Saint Rose, Long Island University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

At Marymount California University, we place great importance on learning through real-world experience. As part of this mission, we are bringing prominent California leaders to our University to discuss leadership challenges and opportunities in the 21st century. This series supports the development of Marymount students, but is open to the public. A reception will follow each event.

Ted Martinez, Jr., Ph.D., served as the eighth Superintendent/President of Rio Hondo College and has worked throughout his career to ensure that all students have access to quality higher education. Nationally, Martinez has been an effective force in building the National Community College Hispanic Council (NCCHC) Leadership Fellows Program to prepare mid-management personnel as future community college leaders at the executive level. Dr. Martinez earned both master’s and bachelor’s degrees in business and economics from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, and went on to receive a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana, Ph.D., is the Senior Policy Advisor for Eric Garcetti, Mayor of Los Angeles, in the area of Education and Workforce Development. She previously served as Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education in the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Meléndez also has served as superintendent of two California school districts—Santa Ana Unified and Pomona Unified. She is President of the Association of Latino School Administrators and Superintendents, is on the board of directors of WestEd, and is a trustee of the J. Paul Getty Trust. Dr. Meléndez earned a Ph.D. at USC, and an honorary doctorate from Pepperdine University, as well as her Bachelor of Arts in sociology from UCLA.

Jorge F. Carreon, M.D., specializes in pelvic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. He brings a unique skill set, with more than 25 years of international experience, to his current role as a medical expert for the state of California. His range of expertise incorporates medical practice management, program development, operations and leadership, and government liaison. Since 2002, Dr. Carreon has served as President of International Health Consultants in Los Angeles. He also founded Clinica-El Golf, a private hospital located in Lima, Peru. In November 2008, Dr. Carreon was appointed a member of the Medical Board of California by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Bonifacio Garcia, J.D., is the Managing Partner of Garcia, Hernandez, Sawhney & Bermudez, LLP. He has extensive experience representing school districts, community college districts, cities and other governmental entities. Garcia has served on the boards of the Skirball Institute of American Values and of the Advancement Project, a public interest litigation group that promotes equal opportunity in American political and educational institutions. A magna cum laude graduate of Loyola Marymount University, Garcia earned his law degree at Harvard University.

Join these accomplished entrepreneurs to learn from their experiences:

Bret Johnsen is Chief Financial Officer of SpaceX, overseeing the long-term financial development of the company, interfacing with the financial community and managing the company’s internal financial operations. He brings more than 20 years of financial leadership experience to SpaceX, mostly in high-profile publicly traded companies. Bret holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting from the University of Southern California and a Master of Science in finance from San Diego State University. He is a certified public accountant in the State of California.

Alan C. Johnson is President of Jerico Development, a real estate development and property management company specializing in historic properties. He currently serves as Treasurer for the San Pedro Historic Waterfront Business Improvement District (PBID). Alan is cofounder of the Grand Vision Foundation, whose mission centers around the historic Warner Grand Theatre, and serves as President of the Crail-Johnson Foundation, which supports programs serving economically, socially and physically disadvantaged children in the Harbor area. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Colorado, with a Bachelor’s degree in business finance.

Brenda Brkusic is an Emmy Award-winning television producer and the Executive Producer of Program Development and National Productions for PBS SoCal. In her current role, Brenda oversees the development, production and distribution of high-quality programs and series for national broadcast on public television. A graduate of Marymount California and Chapman Universities, she also is the owner of Istina Productions, a documentary film production company in Southern California, as well as a member of the Producers Guild of America and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Fred M. Haney, Ph.D., is a venture capital fund manager, private investor and entrepreneur. He cofounded NovaDigm Therapeutics, Inc., where he served as Chairman of the Board. He also cofounded Dynamic Reconfigurable Computing, Inc., in San Jose, and PulSentry, Inc., in Torrance. Fred was founder and manager of 3i Ventures, California—a top-quartile venture capital fund that invested $80 million in 60 companies. He has served on the board of directors of 30 private companies and four public companies. He earned his Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.
