under Rainfed Production Systems of India. Central Research Institute for
Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad (ICAR). pp 102.
Soil carbon sequestration for better soil health and crop productivity and to mitigate
the GHG’s, the soil carbon sequestration potential of different soil and crop
17
management practices of rainfed regions were assessed. Accordingly the data from
long term experiments of the All India Coordinated Project on Dryland Agriculture
(AICRPDA) has been analyzed both for organic and inorganic carbon stocks and the
factors influencing (mainly rainfall, soil type and production system) and their role in
sequestration potential under groundnut, fingermillet, pearl millet, groundnut-
fingermillet, fingermillet-fingermillet, sorghum, soybean, rice based production
systems in different AICRPDA centres. This book summarized the soil carbon
sequestration potential of 6 major rainfed production systems (rainfed rice, rabi
sorghum, soybean, pearl millet, finger millet and groundnut) in different soil types
under diverse agro-ecological regions with variable nutrient management options. Soil
carbon stocks, carbon pools and carbon sequestration rate in six long term manorial
experiments were presented and their relationship with sustainability of production
systems was established. Various carbon positive management options were identified
in recommendations made for their field level implementation.

Gayatri Devi, K. (2011). Livelihood Impacts of Soil Health Improvement in
Backward and Tribal Districts of Andhra Pradesh. Central Research Institute
for Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. pp. 119.
Out of estimated 141 m ha net cultivated area in India, 80 m ha is rainfed which
produces about 40 % food grains in the country. These areas are characterized by low
and erratic rainfall distribution, high temperature, degraded soils with low available
water content leading to multi- nutrient deficiencies. The book covers on how soil
health improvement impacted on crop yields, crop quality, farm inocome and
livelihoods of about 60 villages in the eight backward and tribal districts of Andhra
Pradesh. Improvement in soil health through good agricultural practices, better natural
resource management and addressing issues like profitability and sustainability
through better institutions and support systems was illustrated. Soil health
management by Soil Health Cards to 2200 farmers fields, SSNM and INM through
participatory action research mode in 50 villages of 8 districts (Adilabad, Nalgonda,
18
Khammam, Mahabubnagar, Anantapur, Kadapa, Warangal and Ranga Reddy) will be
used for researchers, extension agencies and government departments.

Crop Response to Potassium on the soils of Agro-ecological Regions of India.
International Potash Institute, Horgen, Switzerland, pp 185.
Soil fertility and its evaluation is one of the major area which needs urgent attention as
deficiency of major and minor plant nutrients emerging in time and space. Potassium
is of greater significance among essential nutrients for improving the crop yield and
quality since it is required in larger quantities by the crop plants. There is a urgent
need of delineating the potassium deficient areas and expected responses in terms of
quality and quantity in different agro-ecological regions of the country, as the
projected requirement of K around 8.1 million tones/ annum in year 2020. Present
book covers the frontier concepts in K fertility assessment and refinement of K
fertilizer recommendations based on new concepts of non-exchangeable K sources of
soils and established relationship with crop response to K application and identified K
efficient regions of India where K application is essential.

Productivity, Studium Press (India) Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi, India. p. 234.
Natural resources like land, water and biodiversity are the key to sustain agricultural
productivity. The book covers the status of natural resources and its efficient
management, its role in food production and meeting other needs like fodder, fuel
wood, fibre, etc. Mainly the strategies for efficient management of soil fertility,
conservation of soil and water, coping with climate on-farm water management in
irrigated and rainfed production systems are covered in detail. Especially, the chapter
on integrated farming systems links the scientific utilization of natural resources to
total farm productivity. Wholly, it’s with complete coverage latest developments and
information from leading ICAR research institutes and State Agricultural Universities
of the country.

This book addresses the various weather aberrations in India and different
mechanisms to make Indian agriculture more climate resilient. Process documentation
of district level agriculture contingency plan was illustrated. Coping strategies for
droughts (late onset, midseason droughts, terminal droughts), floods, cyclone,
hailstorm, heat wave, cold wave, sea water inundation was explained for field crops,
horticulture, vegetables, livestock, poultry and fisheries with complete background of
district information. Information given in the book helps the district authorities and
line departments for implementing various contingency plans for coping abnormal
weather conditions with the district.

Most of the agro-ecological regions of India are showing low soil organic carbon
status with continuous cropping with unsustainable crop management practices such
as low biomass recycling, excessive tillage and burning crop residues. Twenty four
chapters dealing with various issues of soil carbon sequestration included in this book
addressing carbon estimation, soil carbon stocks under irrigated and rainfed eco-
regions, carbon sequestration rates with different management options, GIS based
carbon mapping, soil quality indicators, GHG emissions in relation carbon
sequestration, conservation agriculture, role of agro forestry, biochar etc. At the end
farmers experiences on soil health aspects were also included.
