    Dr. Cavils HBCU Major and Mid-Major Division Preseason Poll Rankings are based on a combination of a ranking algorithm and a voting system. It isthe original HBCU sports poll that separates the rankings (since 2002) of NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NAIA Division I member HBCUinstitutions into two distinct categorical polls: Major and Mid-Major (This format is unlike the historic SBN Poll).

    The Major Division Poll, consist of NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) [formerly I-AA] programs and the Mid-Major DivisionPoll, which consist of both NCAA Division II and NAIA Division I programs. This format was introduced to the public based on the request of BlackCollege blogging fans and on the research that consists of data mining and the difference in scholarship limitation requirements beset by NCAA andNAIA bylaws (i.e. maximum allotment: Division I FCS = 63, Division II = 36 and NAIA = 24).

    HOUSTON, TX The AlcornState Braves (5-1, 3-0) are the newestteam to earn the No. 1 ranking for athird consecutive week in the poll.They earn this ranking afterdemolishing the previously No. 1

    ranked Alabama State Hornets (4-2,3-1) team. The No. 1 Braves with the

    TEN YEARS AND COUNTING !

    best record in the entire HBCU Major Division are a team to continue to watch. Coach Jay Hopson has his club playing really well. But the Braves are on the road as they seek to maintain the No. 1 ranking versus the GramblingState Tigers (3-3, 3-0), whom have won three straight conference games and are playing some solid football.

    Offense - Morgan State running back Herb WalkerJr. ran for 208 yards on 22 carries and a touchdownin the Bears' 24-9 win over the Florida A&MRattlers.

    Defense- Prairie View A&M linebacker JeromeHoward had 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks in thePanthers' 48-30 win against the Jackson StateTigers.

    Special Teams- Grambling State kick returnerMartez Carter had four kickoff returns for 157yards, including a 93-yard touchdown return, in theTigers' 38-28 win against the Alabama A&MBulldogs.

    Coach- Alcorn States Coach Jay Hopson, theBraves guided under the leadership of CoachHopson dominated the previously No. 1 rankedAlabama State Hornets. The Braves improve to 3-0as a divisional leader in t he Eastern Division of theSWAC and earn the No. 1 ranking in the poll thisweek.

    The No. 1 Alcorn State Braves (5-1, 3-0) move up three spots to top of the poll rankings after pounding, 33-7, the No. 5 Alabama State Hornets (4-2, 3-1). Running back Darry Ragsdalerushed for 174 yards with only a one yard loss. Quarterback John Gibbs had another outstandinggame passing 217 yards. The Braves received 102 points and earned six first-place votes. The

    No. 1 Alcorn State Braves will travel across state lines to see if they can tame the GramblingState Tigers (3-3, 3-0).

    The No. 2 Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (4-1, 1-0) defeated 27-7, the Delaware State Hornets (1-5, 1-1). The Wildcats defensive end Erik Williams had a field day by obtaining 3 sacks on thequarterback. The Wildcats received 96 points and four first-place votes this week. The

    Bethune-Cookman Wildcats are on campus for their homecoming this and will host the Howard Bison (1-5, 0-3).

    The No. 3 South Carolina State Bulldogs (4-2, 2-0) moved up three spots this week after defeating 13-0, the No. 4 North Carolina A&T State Aggies (4-2, 1-1) in the Atlanta Football Classic. The Bulldogs quarterback Adrian Kollock passed for 99 yards. The Bulldogs received 85 points and one first-place vote in the poll rankings after big upset win.The Bulldogs will host the North Carolina Central Eagles (2-3, 1-0) this upcoming weekend.

    The No. 4 North Carolina A&T Aggies (4-2, 1-1) fell two spots in rankings after an injury to quarterback KwashaunQuick and losing 13-0, to the No. 3 South Carolina State Bulldogs (4-2, 2-0). The Aggies defensive linebacker DariusLeonard had 13 tackles in the game (8 solo tackles). The Aggies will travel to Delaware State (1-5, 1-1) for anafternoon tilt. The Aggies received 78 points this week.

    No. 1 Alcorn State 1 2 3 4 5Braves (5-1, 3-0). Despite the loss, outside linebacker Kourtney Berry had 15 tackles (12 solo tackles). The Hornetsreceived 76 points in poll rankings. The Hornets will travel back to Texas for the second time this season to challengethe Prairie View A&M Panthers (1-4, 1-3). The Panthers are coming off of their first win of the season of the JacksonState Tigers (3-3, 1-2).

    The No. 6 Tennessee State Tigers (4-2, 1-1) lost 28-21, to Southeast Missouri State Redhawks* (4-2, 2-0) in OVCaction. Tennessee State Tigers linebacker Nick Thrasher led the team in tackles with 16 in the contest (8 solo tackles).The Tigers received 50 points and one first-place vote this week. The Tennessee State Tigers will host the JacksonState Tigers to see which tiger is the best in OVC action.

    The No. 7 Texas Southern Tigers (5-1, 3-1) defeated 20-17, the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils (1-5, 0-4). TheTigers running back Daveonn Porter gained 106 yards on 22 carries. On the defensive side of the ball freshmandefensive back Dondre Dobson intercepted a ball and returning it 70 yards to set-up a score for the Tigers. The TexasSouthern Tigers will have an open date this week on their schedule as the rest and heal before taking on the No. 1Alcorn State Braves (5-1, 3-0) the following week. The Texas Southern Tigers received 51 points in the poll rankingsthis week.

    The No. 8 Grambling State Tigers (3-3, 3-0) did not moving in poll rankings, but have won their third straight game ofthe season after going on the road and defeating 38-28, the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (2-4, 1-2) in a SWAC matchup.The Tigers quarterback Jaymason Lee passed 154 yards and a touchdown. The Tigers will host the No.1 Alcorn StateBraves for a test of wits in an old SWAC rivalry. The G-Men received 43 points in this weeks poll rankings.

    The No. 9 Morgan State Bears (3-3, 2-1) are at .500 after taking a long trip to the state of Florida and defeated 24-9,dropping the Florida A&M Rattlers (0-5, 0-1) as first for this historically rich program. The Bears running back Herb

    Walker, Jr. continues to impress, racking up 203 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown (avg9.2) in the contest. The Morgan State Bears will have an open date this week on theirschedule as they prepare for homecoming and hosting the North Carolina Central Eagles (2-3, 1-0) the following week. The Bears received 31 points this week.

    The No. 10 Southern Jaguars (3-3, 2-1) are back at 0.500 after pounding 51-36, theArkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions (1-3, 0-2). The Jaguars jump back in the poll rankingsafter their impressive victory. Jaguars quarterback Austin Howard passed for 230 yards (14of 22), three touchdowns and an interception in the game. The Southern Jaguars received

    20 points in the poll rankings and will travel to the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (2-4, 1-2) this week.

    The Jackson State Tigers (3-3, 1-2) drop outside of the Top 10 poll rankings this week. The Jackson State Tigers (3-3,1-2) are outside of the Dr. Cavils Top 10 Poll Rankings receiving points. The Jackson State Tigers (3-3, 1-2) receivedthree points in Week 6.

    HOUSTON, TX The Winston-Salem State Rams (3-1, 1-0) of theCIAA continues to hold the No. 1rankings in the poll. The Rams put up70 points in their contest against theChowan Hawks (4-0, 2-0) in a CIAAcontest. The Rams put up 582 yardsof total offense and forced six

    Offense - Stillman quarterback Josh Straughan was17-of-27 with 292 yards, including a school-recordsix touchdowns in the Tigers' 55-16 win over theLane Dragons.

The Rams wide receiver Eric Williams caught two receptions for 135 yards (avg. 67.5) and atouchdown, while on the defensive side of the ball linebacker Duvontae Covington had seven 7tackles (6 solo). The Rams earned 111 points and all 11 first-place votes in the Dr. Cavils Mid-Major Division Football Poll Rankings. The Rams will travel to face the Johnson C. Smith GoldeBulls.

    The No. 2 Morehouse Maroon Tigers (4-1, 3-0) defeated 20-7, the Clark-Atlanta Panthers (1-4, 1-3) their cross town rival. The Maroon Tigers wide running back Malik Johnson rushed 118 yardsand two touchdowns on 24 carries. Morehouse Maroon Tigers will travel to Columbus, Georgia

    for annual Big Cat Fight with the No. 5 Tuskegee Golden Tigers (3-2, 2-0) in the 79th Tuskegee Morehouse Classic.The Maroon Tigers earned 90 points in the poll rankings.

    The No. 3 Virginia Union Panthers (4-1, 3-0) defeated 31-9, the Shaw Bears (2-3, 1-1). The Virginia Union running backKenneth Graham passed for 292 yards (16 0f 28), two touchdowns, and one interception in the contest. The Panthersearned 88 points in the poll rankings. The Panthers will host the Lincoln (PA) Lions in a CIAA contest.

    The No. 4 Livingstone Blue Bears (4-0, 1-0) defeated 59-21, the Elizabeth City State Vikings (2-3, 1-1). The Blue Bearsquarterback Drew Powell passed for 217 yards (20 of 40), three touchdowns and one interception. The Blue Bears earned75 points this weeks rankings.
