Dr. Andrew Thomas0 Born on the 18th of December, 1951 in Adelaide, was

    named Andrew Sydney Thomas

0 Educated at the University of Adelaide, reaching adoctorate in mechanical engineering.

0 Joined NASA in 1992 after being specially selected

0 Spent 177 days, 9 hours and 14 minutes in space

0 In 2006, Dr. Andy Thomas was given a seconddoctorate by the University of Adelaide

0 This was an honorary doctorate in recognition of his

efforts in NASA and for his contributions as a

    research scientist in fluid mechanics.

Inspiration0 From a young age, Dr. Andy Thomas was already very

interested in space and the stars.

0 His desire for adventure came from the explorers in

    Australian history

0 He followed the first moon landing in 1969 veryclosely.

0 He joined the University of Adelaide, choosing and

excelling in his mechanical engineering course

Qualifications0 For someone to become an astronaut, they need to be

    in an excellent physical condition

0 You need a bachelors degree in either any field ofengineering, science or maths from an institution

    which is accredited

0 You must spend at least three years in your

specialised field.0 You have to be a citizen of the USA to be selected by

    NASA (duel citizenships are allowed)

MoreQualificationsThese are further, more specialised requirements

    0 Pilot Astronaut:

The pilot astronaut has to have spent at least 1,000hours in a jet aircraft.

Their height must be between 1.63 m to 1.93 m.

    20/20 vision is required

    0Mission Specialist

    Height must be between 1.57 m to 1.93 m

What Astronauts Do0 There are mainly two types of astronauts: the pilot

    and the mission specialist

0 An astronauts job can be further separated into threesections: supply, repair, assembly and research.

0 There is a fourth, which is self- care, as it is important

for an astronaut to maintain a good physical shape

    Supply, Repair, Assembly and

Research0 Supply: this is the supplying of equipment to space, such as

satellites. Astronauts could also supply importantequipment to the International Space Station.

0 Repair: often, an astronauts job is to maintain or repairequipment such as satellites. This can be done using armsfrom the space shuttle, of by bringing the equipment intothe shuttle and fixing it there.

0 Assembly and Research: the equipment needs to be

assembled in different pieces sometimes, as it would be toolarge to take into space as a whole. Therefore, astronautsget the divided pieces and assemble them to make the onepiece of equipment.

    Difficulty of Becoming an Astronaut

0 NASA collects the information of thousands of

    applicants all around the world.

0 Only the best of the best are selected by NASA, thisnumber is extremely small.

0 NASA only selects astronauts every two years.

0 The requirements only state that you have to have a

bachelorette in one of the required fields, butgenerally, people who get doctorates get accepted.
