A Message From...Marcos MarchenaChair of the 2012 Don Quijote Awards

Fifteen years ago, innovative leaders at the Hispanic Business Initiative Fund and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando conceived an idea to celebrate extraordinary small businesses and entrepreneurship. Since then, the vision has been developed and embraced by thousands within and around our community and the Don Quijote Awards are now the most esteemed and cherished recognition for the local Hispanic business community. I feel privileged to have served as Chair of the 2012 Don Quijote Awards, especially as we reach a special milestone. What a great journey this has been and what a remarkable evening this will be, thanks to all of you who have come together benevolently to celebrate the accomplishments of admirable achievers among us. Like Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s character, today’s finalists and winners are tenacious, brave and forward thinking individuals who have defended their ideals, taken risks and made numerous sacrifices to turn their dreams into successful realities that have benefitted those around them. Today we also celebrate the year-round work of HBIF and HCCMO in our community, which like Don Quijote’s mission is noble: to elevate Hispanic entrepreneurs and professionals and contribute to the economic development of our community. On behalf of HBIF, HCCMO and our Hispanic community in Central Florida I would like to thank the very generous sponsors and steering committee volunteers who have enabled us to carry out this event. Congratulations to the 2012 Don Quijote Awards winners. Tonight you join an impressive group of leaders who have left an indelible impression on our Central Florida community.

Welcome to the 15th Annual Don Quijote Awards! Tonight we feel privileged for numerous reasons. We have the great opportunity of leading the Hispanic Business Initiative Fund of Florida and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando, guided by the passionate and committed leaders who serve on our respective Boards of Directors.

As 2012 culminates, we are fortunate to celebrate a year of growth and accomplishments for both of our organizations. We are extremely grateful to count on generous sponsors, whose belief in our missions and commitment to the local Hispanic business community allow us to gather tonight. Talented and generous volunteers accepted our invitation to serve on the Don Quijote Awards Steering Committee and worked alongside HBIF and Hispanic Chamber employees and volunteers to make today’s event a memorable evening.

We are extremely proud to participate in presenting the finalists and winners of the 2012 Don Quijote Awards, exemplary Hispanic entrepreneurs and leaders. – ¡Felicidades to all!

With your help the Don Quijote Awards have become a signature and vital annual event for our organizations, fulfilling three main objectives: •Recognize top Hispanic entrepreneurs, professionals and leaders of our community; •Be the premier business recognition event for the Hispanic community of Central Florida; and •Serve as an important fundraiser for HBIF and the Hispanic Chamber. Thank you all for embracing our missions and joining us in celebrating our Hispanic community’s success. Enjoy tonight’s fabulous gala!

Awards HistoryThe Don Quijote Awards gala was first conceived in 1997 by a group of visionaries from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando and the Hispanic Business Initiative Fund of Florida.

While both organizations are dedicated to supporting Hispanic entrepreneurship, the chamber is dedicated to providing leadership for and supporting the economic development of the local Hispanic business community, and HBIF works to strengthen the economy of Florida by providing bilingual business development and training to Hispanic entrepreneurs.

As the Central Florida Hispanic community rapidly grew, these leaders saw a need to recognize hardworking, innovative entrepreneurs who exhibited the spirit of Don Quijote: visionaries, dreamers and business men and women who were willing to take risks in order to achieve those dreams.

For 15 years, the two organizations have come together to honor those who demonstrate extraordinary abilities in their field of work.

The first Don Quijote Awards were presented in 1998, under the categories of Professional of the Year, Small Business of the Year Less Than 3 Years, Small Business of the Year More Than 3 Years, and Entrepreneur of the Year. Today, honorees receive awards in one of six categories: ● Hispanic Business of the Year Five Years or Less ● Hispanic Business of the Year More Than Five Years ● Professional of the Year ● The Hispanic Community Champion Award, which recognizes the a non-Hispanic individual who has significantly contributed to the development of the Hispanic community in Central Florida

● The Excellence Award, which recognizes Hispanic individuals whose contributions have elevated the face of the Hispanic community

● The Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the development development and empowerment of the Hispanic community To date, 70 individuals have been honored with the prestigious Don Quijote Awards. This remarkable event is only possible thanks to the support of generous corporations and organizations that recognize the strong presence and contributions of Hispanics in Central Florida. Thank you, Central Florida, for nominating outstanding individuals for this prestigious award. Congratulations to all the finalists for your leadership and success!

A celebration ofSuccess, Courage and Determination

Award Finalists 2012 Lifetime Achievement AwardLizette Valarino Founder and President, Idea Factory

Lizette Valarino, a skilled translator and talented communicator, came to Florida with her husband Fremio in hopes of a better life. Lizette first became a recruitment counselor for an employment agency, helping Spanish-speaking workers find work. She then became an associate editor for a Spanish language newspaper.

Service to Orange County came next, in which Lizette performed outreach as a liaison to the Hispanic community for more than 12 years during the terms of Mayors Mel Martinez and Richard Crotty. In 2000, she proposed an idea to start a scholarship fund to help Hispanic college students further their education. To date, 195 Hispanic youth have realized their dreams of higher education with the help of the Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund of Metro Orlando, and Lizette remains as its volunteer executive director. Lizette, who once had dreams of becoming a ballerina, also has a great appreciation for the art and expressiveness of the dance. Through the years she has volunteered her time to help the Orlando Ballet reach a broader audience and become relevant to the wider community.

One of Lizette’s biggest accomplishments is the Idea Factory, a company she founded in 1996 that helps English-speaking businesses communicate with Spanish-speaking customers.
