MALAYSIA's furniture exports could expand by 15 per cent to match 2008's record high of RM8.7 billion, as manufac-turers take in more orders from emerging markets. In 2010, Malaysia recorded USD2.46 bil (RM7.4 bil) in furniture exports, according to CSIL ( Centre for Industrial Studies based in Milan, Italy ). The CSIL report said Malaysia was ranked 8th glob-ally in 2010 in terms of the value of furniture exports, after China, Italy, Germany, Poland, Vietnam, United States and Canada. United States still remains Malaysia’s no 1 export market.

Furniture manufacturers and exporters are working closely with the authorities to over-come the sector’s labour shortage and its rising demand. Says Datuk Dr Peter Sow, DPS Resources Berhad Executive Chair-man and also President of Majlis Usaha-wan Satu Malaysia who recently celebrated its 30th, 40th and 50th Anniversary of its subsidiaries Shing Huat Rooftruss (since 1982), Shantawood (since 1971) and Len Cheong Holding (since 1962) that the furni-ture industry cannot be overlooked as it is an evergreen industry with tremendous export and global market potential. Backed by over 200 strong members, MUSM has offices in Sabah, Perak and Penang and currently plans to increase to 500 members with presence in 5 locations from 3. Smiling humbly from DPS Corporate Office wearing a colourful 1Malaysia long sleeve batik, Datuk Dr Peter Sow said in an interview with Malaysia Progress that as the nation is connected to the world, it is only logical that we must support our leaders and leverage on our strengths such as multi diversity and multi racial talents to move towards new heights of excellence and success.
