Analysis of DPS

Page 2: DPS Analysis

This DPS is from May 2014 in a Q Magazine. They have one of the biggest institutions and have a lot of competition.

The DPS begins on page 54, which shows it is a magazine with a lot of content, which will appeal to the reader as they will want quality stories to read.

The DPS has two columns of text, which are divided by a horizontal line. The text fills the page width, which an image next to it. There isn’t much white space on the DPS at all, which I like, however it doesn’t look too busy either. The text is left aligned, and is in the font serif, which is more formal, and may appeal more to the audience.

The colours are the basic black on white background, however the simplicity rewards the DPS, because of it’s topic. I feel it’s trying to portray the simplicity of understanding what the article is about. There aren’t any drop capitals throughout the DPS, however there first three words in the text is in bigger, bold writing, which significantly makes it stand out, so it’s easy for the reader to see.

The headline of this DPS is quite fluent, and looks like writing, brush strokes almost. It is effective because it could be personal from the artist. It is bold and striking, as the black stands out on the page. It is contrasting against the red banner next to it, which could symbolize danger, or juxtaposing it could be love.I like the black bold writing in the banner to emphasize certain words.

This image on the DPS, is linking directly to the context of it. The props reading “Fight Transphobia” give an idea immediately to the reader or what it is about. This artist was previously a male, and is now on the course to fight transphobia, and is dressing as a female. This in a sense, may back up Mulvey’s theory, however it is sensitive to judge. Her black deep eye makeup show the genre may be rock, or heavy music.

This contrasting photo, shows the differences and changes that this artists has been through, and it can bring an overwhelming effect on people. I love the clothing in this image, because they’re dark, along with the guitar, and in the modern photo she is wearing a dark outfit, which shows that her emotions and feelings haven't changed and neither has the music.

This has influenced my creativity and planning, because I really like the photograpgh links from past and present, and I want to inlcude something like this when I make my magazine.
