Captions and Cutlines

Captions are there to help answer all of the 5W’s

Although pictures are worth a 1000 words, sometimes they are not all helpful if the scene is confusing or ambiguous

Journalism in Photojournalism

Captions must stand alone from the story in paper/web

People look at pictures first THEN continue to read on

Therefore you must include as much information as you can that will...

Evaluate: Is it complete?

• Does it identify?• Does it tell when and where?• Is it easy to read? (Sentences should be short, direct and in proper sequence?• Does it have names right? (spelling and order?)• Is it specific? (Does it give information on specific points of interest in the picture of does it

merely echo the obvious?)• Does it have adjectives? (The reader should be able to determine “excitement” or “dismay”

from the picture. Remove adjectives.)

Wild Art

Wild Art is NOT a news story or photo essay

Wild Art is a stand alone feature photo that is usually community based and exposes a “slice of life” feel to a coverage area.

Community centres, parks, boardwalks - public places (very often WX related)

Almost always has a person identified with caption
