DP-101 Dial Pad GuideThis guide explains how to setup and use a DP-101 Dial Pad with a G-408, G-408R, or G-404 Intercommunication System (from now on, referred to as a “G-408” for simplicity). After following thisguide, you should be able to connect to your DP-101 to your G-408, configure your G-408’s dial pad features, and know how to use a DP-101 Dial Pad.

Overview SummaryThese are the basic steps you will perform when following this guide:

1) Learn about the dial pad’s hardware.2) Learn about the dial pad’s features.3) Connect the dial pad to your G-408.4) Tune the dial pad settings in your G-408.5) Learn about phone book entry names for use with

the dial pad.6) Optionally connect a CP-102 control panel at the

same time as a dial pad.

Dial Pad HardwareThe DP-101 Dial Pad is an external hardware device that connects to aG-408 (or G-408R or G-404) using a USB cable. The DP-101 (“the dialpad”) is powered by this USB connection – no external power supply isrequired. The dial pad’s USB cable is attached and has a USB Type-Aconnector to plug into the G-408.

The dial pad mainly consists of several keys – similar to a smallcomputer keyboard. There is also an ‘On/Off’ button near the top ofthe pad that can be used to temporarily disable the numeric ‘dialing’buttons. When ‘on’, a green light will surround the button. When ‘off’,the number keys on the dial pad are disabled and the green light is off.

There are two USB ports on the dial pad – one on each side. Theseports are effectively a USB Hub and can be used to connect otherperipherals (such as a CP-102 Control Panel) to the G-408 while the dialpad is connected.

Dial Pad FeaturesThe dial pad is used in conjunction with the text display(the LCD) on the front of the G-408 to manage callswithout the need for a web browser. That is – you canmake/break/answer calls of the various call-basedmodules in the system using the dial pad. (Call basedmodules include PSTN, GSM, Bluetooth, Codan, and SIP.) Using the dial pad is easy – very minimal training isrequired.

NOTE: When using a DP-101, if you see a prompt to “Enter PIN #”, you must enter a security PIN code before you may use the dial pad. This is explained in more detail in a later section.

Primary Features

Find a Call-Based Module – Cycle through all the ‘call based’ modules in the system by using the “Tab” key or the “Smart Selection” key. The “Tab” key will cycle through all the modules while the “Smart Selection” key will try to jump to the most important module first (e.g., one with an incoming call that needs to be answered). The modules and their statuses will be displayed on the display on the front of the G-408. Once you find the module you’re interested in, you can do different things with it.

To Dial a Call – First, find the module. Then, type in the number to dial using the numeric keys on the dial pad. Press ‘Enter’. The call will be placed. (NOTE: The “On/Off” button must be “On” for numeric dialing to work.) This allows you to place calls with PSTN, GSM, and Bluetooth modules, or to dial by IP address for SIP modules. Codan modules cannot be dialed in this fashion.

To Dial a Call with the Phone Book – First, find the module. Then, use the ‘+’ and ‘-’ keys on the dial pad to cycle through the phone book for that specific type of module (the phone books are configured using the G-408’s web interface). Once you find the destination you wantto call, press ‘Enter’. The call will be placed.

To Hang Up an Ongoing Call – First, find the module that has the call you want to end. Press the ‘-’ key. The call will be hung up.

To Answer an Incoming Call – First, find the module that has the incoming call. (The “Smart Selection” key is particularly useful for this task.) Press the ‘+’ key. The call will be answered. (Note that the “auto answer” feature of the G-408 still functions even if a dial pad is connected. Answering calls via the dial pad is typically only used for modules that do not have “auto answer” turned on.)

To Reject an Incoming Call - First, find the module that has the incoming call. (The “Smart Selection” key is particularly useful for this task.) Press the ‘-’ key. The call will be rejected. (Note that this will only work on GSM, Bluetooth, and SIP modules. PSTN and Codan calls cannot be rejected.)

Smart Module Selection – The key in the upper-leftcorner of the dial pad is the “smart selection” key.Pressing this key selects a module based on thecurrent call status of the module. It is very usefulfor finding modules with incoming or ongoing calls, allowing you to answer and hang up calls quickly.

Backspace – The key in the upper-right corner of the dial pad is a “backspace” key. Pressing this key allows you to backspace over dial strings if you make a mistake. Also, when not typing in numbers to dial, pressing the Backspace 3 times will cause the display to go back to its standard non-dial-pad text.

Last Dial Recall – After dialing a number manually (without using the phone book), the last number dialed can be redialed by using the ‘+’ or ‘-’ key. That is, when prompted to enter a number or use the phone book, if the last call the module made was a manual call, the last called number will be displayed by pressing the ‘+’ or ‘-’ key. You can redial the number by pressing ‘Enter’, or just press the ‘+’ or ‘-’ key again to get to the phone book entries. Similarly, when using the phone book, the last entry that was dialed and/or displayed will be displayed first when beginning to navigate the phone book. Both of these features make it very easy to repeat the last call dialed.

Pausing During Dialing – For PSTN modules, it may be helpful to pause at certain points in dialing. (For example, to dial a ‘9’ to get an outside line, then wait before continuing to dial.) To insert pauses into your phone number dialing, press the ‘.’ (period) key as part of your phone number.

Incoming Call Display – When a dial pad is connected, incoming calls will be displayed automatically (if you are not actively doing something else with the dial pad). This allows you to answer or reject them quickly, if desired.

DTMF Injection – When the selected module is in a call, typing in numbers (or ‘*’ or ‘#’), DTMF tones will be played out from the module to the far end device. This helps with navigating automated phone menu systems. (This feature may be turned off on a module-by-module basis, if desired.)

Disable Numeric Dialing – Using the “On/Off’ button on the top-right of the key pad can be a helpful reminder to use the built-in phone book instead of typing in numbers. That is, when turned off it prevents numeric dialing – encouraging operators to use the phone book instead.

Call Alerts on CP-102 – If you also have a CP-102 Control Panel connected to the G-408, call alerts will be played out on the CP-102. If the CP-102 is controlling that module (as one of its rows of LEDs), the sounds will be slightly different than if it is not. (This is to help you distinguish call alerts without needing to look at the panel.)

Custom Error Status – Some modules have unique error conditions that prevent them from making calls. Codan modules must have a cable attached to the module, GSM modules must be registered to the GSM wireless network, and Bluetooth modules must have a device (a mobile phone) connected to them. When viewing the module status with the dial pad, these specific error conditions will be displayed, if applicable.

Change Bluetooth Discoverable State – If you are using a Bluetooth module, the dial pad will display a warning message until a device (a mobile phone) is connected to it. It also provides the option of making the Bluetooth Module “Discoverable” (so the phone can find it), or “Not Discoverable” (so phones will not see it when doing a Bluetooth search).

Longer Backlight Timeout – The LCD on the front of the G-408 normally times out after 2 minutes of inactivity. When using the dial pad, it times out after 5 minutes of inactivity.

The DP-101 has other more subtle features. These features are configured in the “Control Panel Settings” on your G-408 and are described in a later section. (Many of the settings in that tool are alsoapplicable to a CP-102 Control Panel.)

Connecting the Dial Pad to the G-408Connecting the dial pad to the G-408 is very simple. Simply connect the USB cable from the dial pad to the USB port on the front of the G-408. The G-408 may be on or off at the time.

If the G-408 is off when the dial pad is connected and is then turned on, the dial pad will power on automatically. Once the system fully starts up, the G-408 will “discover” the dial pad.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The G-408 MUST be configured to allow dial pads to work with it. If this is not done, the dial pad will be powered on but none of the key presses will have any effect. Enabling the dial pad is done in the “Control Panel Settings” (described in the next section). This is done forsecurity reasons, as it prevents anybody with a DP-101 from connecting to a G-408 that you did not intend to be accessed without a web login.

Dial Pad Settings on the G-408There are several dial pad settings and features available. Only the “Enable Panel and Dial Pad” settingis required. All other settings are optional.

To access the settings, log in to your G-408 using the web interface. If needed, navigate to the “configuration” portion of the system byclicking on the gray gear in the upper right hand corner. Hoverover the “Configure” menu, then click “Control Panel Settings”from the “System” section on the right hand side. (Accessing thesesettings requires the “Modify Basic Configuration” permission.)

From there, you may alter the dial pad and control panel settings. An explanation of the settings is included in the G-408’s built-inhelp documentation, but also follows here. Only the settingsrelevant to dial pads are included:

1) Is Dial Pad Connected – This simply displays whether or not a DP-101 Dial Pad is currently connected to this system.

Page 5: DP-101 Dial Pad Guide - global-comm-tech.com

2) Enable Panel and Dial Pad – (REQUIRED) This setting allows control panels and dial pads to work with this system. If set to “No” (the default), attached dial pads (and control panels) WILL NOT WORK. This is a security feature to prevent unauthorized access to the system.

3) Dial Pad PIN – (Optional) This setting allows dial pads to require a numeric PIN code before thedial pad will operate. That is, if this PIN is set to a number, that number must be entered on the dial pad before it will allow the operator to manage calls. This is an extra layer of security for the dial pad.

4) Enable Beeps – Controls whether or not the dial pad should play confirmation tones when doing various actions. The tones are typically helpful, but you may turn them off if desired. The tones play out of the internal speaker of the G-408 – not out of the dial pad itself.

5) Enable Call Alerts – Controls whether or not the dial pad should play a “ringing” sound for modules that have incoming calls. It also enables tones for when calls are answered or hung up. If a CP-102 Control Panel is connected, these call alert tones will be played out of the control panel’s speaker instead of the G-408’s internal speaker. This tends to be a bit louder and more convenient.

Phone Book Dial Pad Names

Unlike a computer monitor, the display on the front of the G-408 is small and the characters it can display are limited. For this reason, when using the phone book dialing feature of the dial pad, the standard names provided in the phone book will NOT be displayed.

Instead, there is an additional name associated with each phone book entry specifically for use with the dial pad. This is the name that will be displayed. If no dial pad name is provided in the phone book, the phone number will be displayed. In the case of Codan modules (where there is no “phone number”), the entry number will be displayed. (This entry number is not very descriptive, so it is usually a good idea to provide a dial pad name with each entry in the Codan call destination configuration.)

Please see the various phone book tools on the G-408’s web interface for more information. (The “Phone Book” tool for PSTN, GSM, and Bluetooth modules, the “SIP Configuration” tool for SIP modules, and the “Codan Configuration” tool for Codan modules.)

Connect a CP-102 Control Panel with a DP-101 Dial PadThe CP-102 Control Panel allows you to make and break nets between modules without the need for aweb browser. A DP-101 Dial Pad allows you to manage calls without the need for a web browser. It often makes sense to use both of these devices at the same time.

The DP-101 has a built in USB hub to allow that tohappen. Simply plug in the CP-102’s USB cable toone of the DP-101’s USB ports, then plug the DP-101 into the G-408. Both devices will work withthe G-408 simultaneously.

This combination can make for a very powerfultactical solution for the G-408 without the needfor a computer to operate the system.
