CHAIRMAN’S REPORTCHAIRMAN’S REPORT February and March are notoriously busy for our racing fleet and this year has been no exception. I recently attended my first “Safety Sunday” at the club, I’ve always maintained my Yachting Australia SSSC certification and have not, until now, participated in a Safety Sunday session and I was extremely impressed by the professionalism of our instructors and the amazing amount of information they were able to pass on to those who attended this very busy day. Safety Sunday aims to teach our members the basics of safety at sea but is in no way intended to be as comprehensive as the Sea Safety Survival Course. It was wonderful to talk to those who attended and hear such positive feedback about the day and I congratulate Andy Shipp, Matt Young, John Edwards and Brett Yardley for their time and dedication towards ensuring that our crews can head out to sea armed with basic safety knowledge. We will continue to run two Safety Sundays every year but I do urge skippers to urge new crew members to attend one as soon as possible rather than leave it until just before the Lincoln race. We managed to squeeze everyone in but from now numbers will be capped at 40 per day which means some may miss out. On the subject of Safety, the position of REX is that whilst not mandatory, we do urge ALL skippers to hold current SSSC certification.

Another highlight of the past month was February’s Combined Twilight race. With ideal weather conditions, it was fantastic to see such a large fleet out on the water, Mario, Dorian and staff were kept busy with more than 300 hungry crew members and friends to feed and some great live music by acoustic duo “Simply By Chance” further complemented the great social atmosphere of the night.

And finally, the Adelaide –Lincoln race and Lincoln Race Week were a success yet again. The rivalry between the big boats, the hard work of all crews in very challenging and changeable conditions, the marathon that the race turned out to be and the thrills and spills of Regatta racing on the Boston Bay all contributed to a memorable week for all competitors. My own pedigree for this race doesn’t extend to more than a decade and a half but, speaking to some who have clocked up more than twice that number it would seem that this year was one of, if not THE longest Lincoln races in memory but relatively flat seas and warm temperatures possibly helped to allay some of the frustration. Many interstate competitors commented to me during the week that they consider that Lincoln rates as one of the very best in the country, and for a number of reasons: Gathering together at the Adelaide host club, the race itself, the camaraderie of all crews at the Marina Tavern, proximity of available accommodation and the many social events on the program all combine to make visitors feel very welcome. On behalf of REX I congratulate the Port Lincoln Yacht Club committee along with Stewart Ross and his on-water team for their wonderful effort once again this year.

Looking ahead, we have 13 races to complete our program this year. Presentation night is on the 3rd May, and don’t forget to find a lady to helm in the coming ladies twilight race !

Congratulations also to the Secret Men’s’ Business crew on breaking their hoodoo with Scarlet Runner, for the first time in four years the smaller white boat beat the big red boat, nay, thrashed the b i g r e d b o a t , o v e r t h e line. Congratulations also to the Sydney 38 Fleet competitors who revelled in their one-design fleet racing during the week and a hearty thanks to Andrew Corletto, Geoff Boettcher, Derek Morrison, Keith Finch and the crews of Shining Sea, SMB 3.5, Asylum and Rapid . Their excellent efforts in such a challenging Lincoln Race clinched the Teams Trophy for the CYCSA this year.

Hello Racing Members, and welcome back from a little Lincoln enforced

break! Hopefully everyone who raced in the Lexus Adelaide to Port

Lincoln Yacht Race has made it back to the marina safely and had an

enjoyable time over in Port Lincoln, after what was, from all reports,

a long, slow trip there.

Thanks to those who participated in the Combined Pre-Lincoln Twilight

race on the 13th Feb - what a turnout under the patio after the race!

We were amazed to see over 300 people join our post-race

gourmet BBQ to enjoy dinner and the great entertainment by the boys

from ‘Simply by Chance’ - if you enjoyed their music, don’t miss them

playing at the CYCSA again at the Saturday Night BBQ for the Great

Southern Regatta (6 April 2013).

IRC NEWS IRC NEWS with WILLIAM STRANGWAYSwith WILLIAM STRANGWAYS Busy times in the lead up to Lincoln – The Gnome, Naughty Black Shorts, Fresh, Concubine, Rapid 1, Peer Gynt and Two True all requiring assistance, in addition to some of the Sydney 38 fleet including Asylum, Shining Sea, White Knight, Chutzpa 38, Mille Sabords and Audacious.

On the 9th Feb we had a double W/L race day for both Division 1 & 2 SA IRC State Champs. Light winds prevailed – 5 knots for race 1 and a bit more for race 2. Good courses were set for the tricky conditions. Shining Sea won both races in Division 1, whilst the glory was shared in Division 2 with Vertigo winning race 1 and Dr Feelgood winning race 2.

COMBINED PRECOMBINED PRE--LINCOLN TWILIGHT RACELINCOLN TWILIGHT RACE With a fantastic fleet of 52 boats on the

water, including 22 from RSAYS and 7 visiting

vessels, the boys on CYC1 & CYC2 once again

did an absolutely stellar job on the water for

the Combined Pre-Lincoln twilight Race on

the 13th February 2013. It was a bit choppy

on the water, with seas of 1.5m and the wind

speed averaging 15 knots, but that didn’t stop

all boats from crossing the finishing line by

the end of the time limit.

A fantastic crowd of over 300 people booked for dinner at the CYCSA after the race, which

had the hospitality staff in whirlwind, trying to find enough chairs and tables to cater for

the biggest post twilight BBQ we have seen in years! Chef Dorian and his offsiders Andy &

Kim did an amazing job catering for the hungry masses, with an abundance of tasty food to

show off to our visitors!

The night was topped off by the

great entertainment provided by

‘Simply By Chance’. It was a real

treat to see so many people

sticking around for hours

afterwards, catching up with old

friends and having a great night!

The Glenelg Gulf Offshore Race on Saturday 2nd February was a challenge for Asylum as we were short on crew with just seven on board. However, we got off to a great start at 1.00pm and made excellent time on the first leg. The tide was coming in all afternoon so we tacked close to the shore as possible. Yachts from the Squadron and CYCSA compete together but score their own results. The lead boats were the three Sydney 38’s and two Beneteaus, with Enchantress and Vicki J IV close behind. We used our No 3 jib on the first leg upwind to Glenelg breakwater. At the first mark we had Vulcan, the lead boat, in front and Lucette behind.

We rounded the breakwater at 2.50pm approx. and headed north-west on a bearing of 300 degrees, towards the second mark. After some thought we chose to go with our jib-top headsail as the wind was still forward of the beam at around 75degs wind angle, Shining seas set a code zero or asymmetric spinnaker but found it took them too far to the north and soon changed back to a headsail. With a following wind and tide we made excellent time travelling at over nine knots on this twenty odd nautical mile leg. Unlike Glenelg, Long Spit beacon is not one of South Australia’s most popular holiday destinations being a lonely beacon in the centre of the Gulf at the northern end. At this mark the race had tightened with many of the yachts behind catching up.

Asylum rounded the Long Spit beacon just before 6.00pm with the No 3 jib up but soon found it too much in the strengthening winds hard on the nose on the final return leg. We changed back to the jib-top, but eventually found it hard to handle being over powered again and found ourselves being passed. Our next move was to put in a reef as we were unable to do a peel to the No. 4. A bear headed change would have cost too much time. It was evident that weight on the rail makes a great deal of difference when hard on the wind with over twenty knots most of the way. This race proved to us that less crew is a slight advantage downwind especially if a spinnaker is not needed but a real handicap upwind in a stiff breeze.

We ducked the finish line at 8.51pm (from memory). Well done to Andy Ship and Kinetic Energy on their win.

Forecast: 10-12 knots SSW, with the sea breeze getting lighter during the afternoon and going SE -E in the evening with a severe thunderstorm warning. Lighter N-NW predicted for Saturday in the Spencer Gulf.

43 monohulls faced the starter for the 1500 start in sunny conditions with about 12 knots of breeze from 230°. It proved to be a very aggressive start by many competitors and a 15° wind shift to the south just prior to the gun resulted in many yachts being over the line, causing a general recall and the start line being reset.

The second start at 1518 was a clear start. Marnico, Rampage and a few more yachts held onto their starboard tack down the coast to avoid the strong incoming tide, however 95% of the fleet tacked onto port at the earliest opportunity laying just south of Port Vincent, hoping for the predicted SE change.

At 2105 3 Cool Cats rounded Marion Reef with Asylum, Concubine, Shining Sea, The Gnome, Mille Sabords, Vulcan, Kaesler and Lucette nearby – Aikin, Rapid 1 and Marnico were a couple of miles in front of this bunch. At this stage the wind had picked up to 20 knots and was more to the east. Most yachts hoisted spinnakers, and by 2200 the wind had eased to 15 knots and had gone even further to the east (85°).

Saturday morning at 0400 most of the group were adjacent to Haystack Island in 10 knots of wind from the east. At 0430, approaching the turning mark near Emmes Reef, 3 Cool Cats came up to 300° to the lay line for Dangerous Reef in 15 knots of wind from the east. At 0500 we were chasing the easing wind to the east and hooked up a cray pot around the rudder, which stopped us dead, losing about 15 minutes to get free and also losing all our momentum. The wind was now down to 3 knots from 60°. At 0540 abeam West Cape we were in flat seas, making very slow progress.

At 0840, Holden’s SMB 3.5 called into Tumby Bay – finished! “All eyes now watching for the Tuna Cage abeam Dangerous Reef”. Seahawk withdrew at 1337, due to zero wind for 6 hours between Cape Spencer & West Cape. They were quickly followed by Mojo, War & Peace, Liberator, Peer Gynt and Speakeasy. In total, 19 racing, 5 cruising and 1 multihull withdrew (approximately half the fleet).

Our group had stayed in touch for most of the race and were close to Dangerous Reed at around 1430. It took another 3 and a half hours to do the last 18 miles to the finish. Due to the lack of wind and hot conditions, most of the yachts were very light on for food and water as they crossed the finish line.

It was a fairly quiet Saturday night as most crews were exhausted from the long, slow race. Sunday’s presentations at the PLYC were a great success; however the very hot weather limited the amount of outside activity.

By 1700, the breeze had moved 20° to the left, but dropped

down to 9 knots. Holden’s SMB 3.5 and Scarlett Runner were

rapidly heading for the horizon in a race of their own. The

occasional brief huge wind shifts of 60-80° kept the crews on

their toes, and by 1800 the breeze had continued to move to the

left – it was now 180° and 10 knots with flat seas and most of the

fleet had lifted up to the Marion Reef Mark.

At 1900, the breeze had gone even further left to 150° (80° since the start time); at 13 knots with the breeze swinging so much that a large group of yachts in the 38-50 feet range converged on Marion Reef.

Lincoln Week started on Monday 18 February with 2 W/L races. On lap 2 of Race 1 a 35/40 knot northerly came ripping through the fleet, causing carnage to some Monohulls, but it was worse for a Multihull which flipped over. Racing was postponed for the day whilst all rescue efforts concentrated on the upturned Multihull.

Tuesday the 19th was a long race around Taylor Island in perfect conditions – 10-15 knots Southeasterly. Wednesday the 20th was Mega’s BBQ Day, and more perfect weather! On the final day of racing – Thursday the 21st, 3 W/L were raced, with presentations following on Thursday evening – a sell out!

The second Sydney 38 SA State Titles was held during Lincoln Week with 3 boats from each of SA and Victoria participating. The Sydney 38s sailed in One Design configuration and only did windward/leeward courses. With racing abandoned on the first day after some spectacular wipe-outs by most of the 38s, the race committee was still able to get in the full 7 race program with extra races on the Tuesday and Thursday.

The racing was extremely tight in a number of races with only 1 second separating boats at the finish. Chutzpah38 (Bruce Taylor) from Victoria won the series with consistently good results. White Knight (David Knights) finished second showing some excellent speed during the week and picking some good shifts. Shining Sea (Andrew Corletto) finished third overall following some inconsistent races despite having good speed around the track.

The Victorian boats all reported having a great time during the week and enjoyed the experience and in particular the hospitality from the locals and the Sydney 38 crew dinner at the PLYC on Tuesday night.

The Racing Association and the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia would like to pass our condolences to the family of Teki Dalton following his passing.

Sadly last week Teki Dalton lost a very long battle against Kidney Cancer. Teki devoted most of his life to sailing and was a member of the AMSA Board and various committees. He was a founding member of the Canberra Ocean Racing Club and contributed to the growth of sailing, training and safety for many years.

Yachting Australia’s Safety and Sea Survival course was created following the 1998 Sydney to Hobart tragedy and was launched in June of 2001.

For a number of years, the CYCSA Marine Academy employed Teki to run the SSSC at our Club.

We join Yachting Australia in thanking Teki for his lifetime contribution to our sport and we extend our sincere sympathies to his wife, family and close friends.
