Brickyard Brickyard Plaza is tucked away from the noise of the bars on Mill Avenue and is well-situated in the midst of culturally interesting ASU facilities. The plaza’s central water feature provides a serene white noise backdrop and the surrounding buildings offer a shaded plaza and a feeling that one has just stepped onto a college campus—obviously, one has, but the contrast from Mill Avenue is very noticeable. There are comfortable places to sit and read, and good opportunities to create defined spaces for performances, art, and music. We recommend making this plaza an ASU showcase. Whoever decided to place the School of Arts, Media, and Engineering, Ceramics Research Center, and Art Museum, along with the other Brickyard tenants seems to have the same idea—they are all natural fits with public space programming. The plaza’s physical dimensions and connections to interesting ASU departments make it the perfect place to have small, student oriented performances, interactive art installations, outdoor presentations, and other programs showcasing the talents and interests of ASU students. Additionally, by making some minor improvements to outdoor infrastructure and site furnishings, the space could be a great place for students and even downtown residents to lounge, read, and unwind. Programing can occur during cooler parts of the afternoon and evening, while passive programs can occur at all times of the day. Programming Student art installations: The plaza can serve as a location for outdoor student exhibitions for the school of art and can serve as an outdoor extension of the existing A Museum that is adjacent to the plaza. Student exhibitions: Student exhibitions organized by various ASU departments, groups, or clubs can also take place in the space, on topics such as green technology, engineering, or social science. Arizona in review: A monthly or annual program run by the ASU school of journalism, this program would go through the biggest stories of the month or the year in Arizona or the Phoenix area. They could be displayed on vinyl panels that are stretched over aluminum frames, and fabricated by a local printer. Brickyard Plaza is tucked away from the noise of the bars on Mill Avenue and is well-situated in the midst of culturally interesting ASU facilities.

    Programming

Student art installations: The plaza can serve as a location for outdoor student exhibitions for the school of art and can serve as an outdoor extension of the existing A Museum that is adjacent to the plaza.

Outdoor ceramics and art classes: Various art departments could participate in programming by performing art demos or providing art classes. These would be open to the public.

ASU group meetings: This space can also serve as the meeting place for various organized ASU student groups such as book clubs or study groups.

Student performances: Organized student performances can occur in the space such as soloists, string quartets, dancers, and performance artists. If properly advertised or done in conjunction

Wake Forest students in a meeting with the President of the university.

  • with a downtown business partner, they could also provide students with more exposure than they’d normally get.

WiFi: WiFi would allow students (or downtown office employees, boss permitting) to work in the space for extended periods of time.

Coffee cart: A coffee cart would give students a reason to come to Brickyard and will extend users stays if they choose to sit in the space to enjoy their coffee. ASU already has multiple tenants who might jump at the opportunity.

Ice cream cart: Similar to the coffee cart, an ice cream cart would give students a reason to go to the plaza. Again, an existing ASU vendor might want to do this.

Movable furniture: Movable furniture such as chairs, tables, and umbrellas will create a comfortable environment for ASU students and other users. Movable furniture is also conducive to programming because it can be moved into various configurations.

Convenience outlets: Convenience outlets allow public space users to charge their phone or computer, extending their time in the public space.

    Physical Improvements

This space will not require major physical improvements, but it can benefit from adding planters full of colorful flowers and plants throughout the plaza. Adding softscape will help to balance out the largely hardscape area and will make the space more inviting.
