Lily Franklin is a young interior designer who recently purchased a loft in a high rise in downtown San Francisco.

Lily wanted a live/work space and to stay true to the Art Deco, Industrial style of the building while maintaining the open, airy loft feel.

A modest 600 sq.ft. required careful space planning and allocation of public and private areas. Plumbing walls dictated the location of the kitchen and bathroom. Ceilings were lowered above the bath, laundry room, and closet to allow for storage space above.

The dining room with its two glass-topped drafting tables also functions as her work space, and the bedroom is separated from the rest of the apartment by the raised wood platform and floor-to-ceiling drapery panels.

Furnishings are multi-functional Art Deco antiques.

THE GOLDING’S FRENCH

FARMHOUSE DINING ROOM

This is the design for the dining room in the house of my dreams, an ancient farmhouse in the French countryside. These homes are usually made of stone, stucco, or timbered wood and are small and open. The addition of plumbing and electrical would be required.

Minimal furnishings like this mix of antique French furniture styles lend a worn, collected-over-time, authentic French feel to the space. Walls, floors, and ceiling are left bare to let the beauty of the ancient house shine. This is a warm, inviting space where family and friends can relax and enjoy a meal and the French countryside.

This project involved designing an assisted living facility that offered two different-sized apartments as well as all public areas and the facility’s branding including the logo and other marketing materials.

ADA compliance was of utmost importance, so all areas have 5’ turning radii or transfer space where necessary. Low thresholds, low pile carpeting, and resilient flooring accommodate all residents, regardless of ability.

Sustainable materials in calming earth tones were used as well as natural lighting and access to nature to help to promote the health and overall well-being of the residents.

DESIGNED BY LONESTAR COLLEGE – KINGWOOD

Lone Star College – Kingwood’sentry into the 2010 ASIDShowrise was based on theconcept of “Subtle Drama.”

As student chapter president,I led a group of students todesign a guest bedroom andbath in an apartment in theCommerce Towers building indowntown Houston.

The concept of “Subtle Drama”was achieved through the useof neutral paint colors andneutral fabrics with a lot oftexture like the bedding andthe custom-designed draperiesin both rooms.

Mirrors, crystal, a mix ofmetallics, custom wall stencils, and pops of warm colorthroughout add drama and givethe rooms the high-end feelneeded for this exclusiveaddress.

The Sultan’s Table

The Sultan’s Table is a fine dining and entertainment venue reminiscent of a 1940’s supperclub. The Moroccan theme is portrayed mainly through the use of Moroccan-styled lightfixtures and theatrical lighting effects.

Lighting elements in the lobby include a large, custom-designed bronze and glassbead chandelier, uplighting on potted palms, a backlit, color-changing hostess table, and fiber optics used to highlight the large wooden doors.

The Sultan’s TableThe tent-like banquette tables inside the club are lit with hand-blown, hand-forged glass and bronze pendant lamps. The center tables are lit by the backlit pony wall on the side, and the tables nearest the dance floor are lit with custom-created table lamps made of an Aladdin’s lamp, blown glass, and color-changing fiber optics.

The dance floor is LCD video panels programmed to resemble a flying carpet, and the bandstand is a silhouette of the city of Marrakech, Morocco. The silhouette is lit from behind by fiber optics and a programmable, color-changing light source so that it appears as though the sun is setting on the city as the evening progresses. As the sun sets, the star sky ceiling comes to life and begins to twinkle.

The overall effect is dramatic, creative, and unique.
