DOWNTOWNFERNDALEMajor highways are easy connectors to important access roads, Woodward & Nine Mile, positioning the district no more than 20 minutes from anywhere in metro Detroit. Mass transit also provides access via SMART’s Woodward Avenue line and crosstown connectors on Nine Mile. The Night Move, a privately run biofuel bus, provides additional transportation on weekends and for special regional events. Once you’ve arrived, getting around town is easy. Two information kiosks on East and West Nine will help you fi nd your way and are part of the new signage designed to direct you where you want to go, however you want to get there – by car, by bike or on foot.

In spring of 2010, Downtown Ferndale was honored with the Great American Main Street Award, an accolade from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the highest achievement a downtown can claim. Only two Michigan cities have won before and Downtown Ferndale was the fi rst ever in Oakland County to bring home the GAMSA.

For sure, local stakeholders whooped and hollered and jumped for joy. But the joy was not so much about winning. It was about celebrating a downtown that lives and breathes and thinks like the people who worked so hard to change it. It was about acknowledging a job well done in creating a place of endless possibilities. It was about the “at last” results of years of hard work and dedication to a city that is now the nation’s best example of what can happen when a community pulls together. The work, of course, goes on and there is still much to do. Goals and objectives are revisited yearly and long term plans guide the district toward its future. The Ferndale Downtown Development Authority continues to follow the Oakland County Main Street Program for economic redevelopment. Dedicated volunteers continue to contribute their time, talent and enthusiasm. Join them. Downtown Ferndale looks different these days and the Change is Good.

The iconic Woodward & Nine intersection is still the X that marks the spot, but the city is growing up. The West Nine retail district today thrives with a healthy mix of destination shops and must dine-at restaurants. East Nine is now distinguished by the city’s redesigned skyline, outlined by the restored Foley & Mansfi eld Law Offi ces, a renovated Ferndale Public Library, and the fi rst housing development to be built downtown in decades – the four-story Lofts on Nine.

Woodward Avenue remains an impressive heritage gateway and is still the best entrance a city could make. Maturing median trees softly divide the eight lanes of the big M1 and at night, glittering lights illuminate business neighborhoods and the destination stores and bars that demand a longer look.

Downtown Ferndale has also undergone a change of heart. The progressive attitude and embrace of diversity that jump started the metamorphosis from the Ferndale of old, has embedded a mindset that warmly welcomes an intriguing collection of human beings and the businesses that serve them. From art galleries and ad agencies, organic grocers to the green gardener, there is no shortage of the inspired or the inspirational, and the synergy feeds the city’s soul.

Then there is the “Be Green” mantra. It has distinguished Downtown Ferndale in the very best ways and infl uences how lives are lived, business is conducted. Recycling bins abound, dozens of bike racks accommodate a growing population of cycling commuters; organic baked goods, clothes, even beer, prove how green the mentality is and must be.

Of course, within the evolution there is much about Downtown Ferndale that feels comfortably familiar, like hanging out with an old friend. Walk down Nine and you will quickly feel at home. Whether it is the wafting aroma of homemade bread or the sounds of laughter from an outdoor café, this is an urban center built on the spirit of its people. They truly love their hometown downtown, its kitschy mix of old/new, its pursuit of repurposing more and discarding less, of considering every possibility and disregarding the restraints of pure convention. Those that live, work and play here are the foundation for the change. They freely open their arms and readily welcome anyone real who wants in.

In spring of 2010, Downtown Ferndale was honored with the Great American Main Street Award, an accolade from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the highest achievement a downtown can claim. Only two Michigan cities have won before and Downtown Ferndale was the fi rst ever in Oakland County to bring home the GAMSA.

For sure, local stakeholders whooped and hollered and jumped for joy. But the joy was not so much about winning. It was about celebrating a downtown that lives and breathes and thinks like the people who worked so hard to change it. It was about acknowledging a job well done in creating a place of endless possibilities. It was about the “at last” results of years of hard work and dedication to a city that is now the nation’s best example of what can happen when a community pulls together. The work, of course, goes on and there is still much to do. Goals and objectives are revisited yearly and long term plans guide the district toward its future. The Ferndale Downtown Development Authority continues to follow the Oakland County Main Street Program for economic redevelopment.
