“Soul Food Junkies” Coming to Community CinemaWKAR's next Community Cinema presen-tation takes place Thursday, January 10, at 7 p.m. at WKAR. The event is free but reservations are required at WKAR.org and open December 27.

Following the screening panelists Laura DeLind, Lorraine Weatherspoon and Andrea King Coller will address issues presented in the documentary.

This film explores the soul-food tradi-tion and its relevance to African Ameri-can culture. Highly seasoned, deep-fried foods such as okra, hush puppies, collard greens, black-eyed peas with ham hocks, as well as chitterlings and wild game first became common fare throughout rural and Southern-African American populations during the 17th to 19th century slave trade in America. Today however, soul food is getting a closer look under the microscope as health studies link a diet rich in satu-rated fats, starch, sodium, cholesterol and calories to high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.

Your Work, Your World, Your WKARWKAR Radio wants to come to your location and record both the sounds of your world and you!

“We’re asking participants to explain where you are and what you do, then add in our station ID information,” says News Director Kevin Lavery. “We might visit you where you work or where you and your children play. We want to get out on the road and talk with you!”

If you are interested in being part of our “Sonic ID” project, please send an email to [email protected], including the words “Sonic ID” in the subject line.

A Letter to Our ReadersThanks to our supporters for sustaining our programming for another fantastic year. WKAR is excited to share with you many firsts in this new year. We have several exciting programs and seasons launching this month, including Current State on 90.5 radio, and BackStage Pass and Downton Abbey on WKAR-TV (read more inside).

Much as you do in setting priorities for securing those things most vital to your livelihood, we have to do the same on a daily basis at WKAR. That often means making tough decisions to scale back on some efforts, so we can put more into those programs that viewers and listeners like you value the most. We try very hard to consider the needs and interests of our entire audience across a very diverse community.

Stay Tuned is a perfect example of how WKAR is trimming back on one of the most expensive offerings we provide to our members, while preserving what our readers value most. Starting this month, we cut back on the length of this monthly publication, but increased the print size of the TV and radio station schedules. With fewer pages, we save on design, printing and mailing costs, while providing an even easier-to-read tool for members who prefer print over the web site to keep up with their favorite programs.

Annual savings from this carefully thought-out modification is roughly equal to the salary and benefits of a full-time content producer for our radio, TV or online services. That means more expertise dedicated to great programming, which is what we’re truly all about!

Thanks so much for your support and understanding. Please send comments to [email protected].

A reAllY BIg DeAl!New Radio News Program, “Current State,” Launches on WKAR RadioThose in the broadcast industry know that it’s a really big deal when you have a chance to create a completely new, hourly, in-depth news program. And that opportunity is creating a tremendous amount of excitement and energy around the WKAR studio and across the university campus as well.

The new show, Current State, will be hosted by well-known WKAR news reporter Mark Bashore and hit the air waves on January 14 at 9 a.m. sharp. The hour-long program will be updated each day and aired again from 6-7 p.m. The program will air at noon on AM/870 and will be portable with a daily podcast. Using a magazine format, each daily show will feature a variety of newsworthy topics with special guests. Listeners will be encouraged to join the conversation as well.

“Current State will cover the most important news stories in mid-Michigan but we want to go further,” says Bashore. “We’ll dig deeper into those stories and explore more of what’s in play. Going further also means all kinds of music – some performed live in our new studio – the arts, lighter topics, the offbeat. There’s little, if anything, we’ve taken off the table,” he adds. “And we want to hear your story ideas, too.”

Whether it’s over a cup of coffee or tea in the morning, or your drive home from work or school in the evening, Current State intends to be essential listening for the mid-Michigan area.

If you have ideas for Current State, post them on the WKAR Facebook page or send an email to [email protected].

Mark Bashore
