In sixth grade I visited the Eco trust building. Seeing plants on top of a building was just about the coolest thign I’d ever seen. I want to create spaces that inspire curiosity thought and intrigue.

It was more than plants on the roof however, it was the responsibility the building cared with it. This informs what I am really passionate about, how architecture has a responsibility to people but also the environment.

Portland CourtyardHousingMedium Density Housing:Balancing Wants and Needs

This housing studio actually studies a vari-ety of housing types in one week excercises from conceptual design to finished docu-mentation. Beginning with a single room study to understand the minimum spatial requirements for living, the studio looks at row-housing, walk-up apartments, and single family detached.

This selected project from the studio is medium density courtyard housing in Port-land, Oregon. The goal is to design the most units under 1200 square feet on two 5,000 square foot Portland lots while still accommodating outdoor space and parking for each unit. Exploration in to fee-simple ownership types allows for flexibility in lot line restriction. By having connected units, construction can be simplified. thermal ben-efits are retained, and stormwater manage-ment can be more readily managed. Com-mon outdoor space is bolstered by making driveways permiable pavers, becoming play space for local kids.

The blurb about the context and this type of housing should go here. It can prob-ably be copied which willl help with the proper labeling of the whole thing.

The addition of a Core to a home will sufficiently provide the basic daily needs for a family of six. Along with benefitting the family, the Core is linked to the ecology of the site with the intake of rainwater and production of fertilizer for crops.

Ferris Wheelchair LiftExploration in Kineticsfor an Inclusive SocietyA study abroad studio in Vancouver B.C. in-cludes a class in kinetic architecture. This group project looks at how changing elements shape and transform space. Our socially-minded team was interested in epxloring the possibliity of designing a wheelchair lift that does not require electricity. As we quickly found out, there is a reason this has not been attempted.

There are two major challenges in designing this system: 1. Variable weight and 2. Designing a system that can be operated by an outside user (caretaker) as well as the number of safety mechanisms that need to employed without electricity. We learned of a way to stablize the platform using a carefully calculated gear train that would rotate the gear connected to the platform in a constant arc relative to the pivot point. We explored a variety of ways to solve each of the safety mechansim challenge and each one ended in finding more challenges. Our final proposal allows pedestrians to walk through the system while it is not in use, guards to protect them while in use, and a localized clutch system to allow caretakers to operate the lift from outside the gates.

Clutch system for hand wheels. Pulling lever uses a cam to engage a clutch which will then release as soon as the lever is let go of. A spring and rotary damper in the rotating lever stops it from hurting anyone

Safety Gates are compressed when lift is not in use to allow people to walk through the system naturally. A connected spring mechanism automatically raises the gates as the lift starts moving up, stopping anyone from accidentally walking through while in use.

Skinner’s ButteVisitor’s CenterA hub for locals and travelers to explore and learn

The narrative of the Pacfic Northwest is be-ing increasingly told in the context of the relationship between the Native Americans and European explorers expanding West. In Eugene, Oregon this history has slipped through the cracks with little memorializing the founders, thier experience settling and the Native American’s who were living there already.

My approach is focused on glorifying the experience of discovery and encourag-ing exploration. With paths through the building and engaging positive outdoor space the indoor area and outdoor space is meant to feel complete in conjunction with each other and establish a set of interac-tions that leaves the visitor seeking the next room. Split in to three branches the build-ing holds the past (the permanent exhibit of historic items courtesy of the Eugene County Museum), the present (library which archives settlers experiences via journals, books, and other records), and the future (a rotating exhibit space and multimedia presentation rooms).

This small end table is still in the prototyp-ing phase of development. Inspiration is drawn from a tree trunk that has a rotating top disc. Created by stacking up 3/4” discs of wood, the top one is not glued allowing it to rotate around a center pivot. A small planter in the rear has a tray that is con-nected to a tab in the table’s front. Pull the tab up then in turn drops the planter tray unlocking the top disc to be able to rotate.

A simple bathroom organizer looks at the idea of durability of material over time. Wooden elements indicate places where the user may touch. Water will change the materials over time giving each a unique character.
