SEAWALKTAKE A WALK ANY DAY!

West Vancouver’s beautiful sea walk is one of the most popular spaces in our community and is even busier in the sunny summer months. While you’re enjoying all the festivities on June 2, be sure to stroll the sea walk route to catch the new interpretive panels placed along the waterfront. Learn about Lighthouse Park, the West Vancouver Memorial Library, the history of West Vancouver’s Memorial Arch and much more!

HORSESHOE BAY 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A small fi shing and resort destination in the early 1920s, Horseshoe Bay is now a busy waterfront community with plenty of beautiful sights and sounds. In the 1930s passengers would take ferry rides from Horseshoe Bay to the Ferry Building Pier on 14th Street. For Centennial Community Day, we will be bringing back this historic ferry route with Sea Safari’s departing from Sewell’s Marina.

Spend the entire day in West Vancouver!West Vancouver only turns 100 once, so let’s make this Centennial Community Day Celebration a day to remember. Enjoy live music, dance performances, boat rides, great food and more. We’ve

planned plenty of fun to keep you celebrating till the stars come out - so park your car, take a boat or bus ride, and check out all the beautiful locations hosting centennial celebrations.

The West Vancouver School District was founded in 1912 when the residents of West Vancouver elected their fi rst council and school board. In 1913, Hollyburn Elementary School was built as a two-room school house in the picturesque seaside community of Ambleside. Today, the school combines the charm of a heritage building with the modern tools needed for teaching in the 21st century. The school is opening up its doors on June 2 and inviting everyone to join in celebrating 100 years of history with some family-friendly fun!

Dundarave was named after Dundarave Castle in Scotland. Originally, the area was a notable secluded holiday spot for vacationing Vancouverites; however, in 1914 a pier was built at 25th Street and the area fl ourished. The very fi rst West Vancouver swimming club was created in Dundarave and it also held the very fi rst regatta. On June 2 the space will become home to a craft fair, stage and more!

West Vancouver was once little more than a cluster of cottages clinging to a rugged coastline. But despite its isolation and challenging landscape, our founding fathers

had a vision for their rustic seaside community. That vision included a ferry service from Vancouver which was in full operation by 1909, three years before the municipality incorporated. It was also why Hollyburn Ski Lodge was constructed long before there was any ski infrastructure in place here. From its earliest days, West Vancouver has attracted pioneering spirits with the will to take risks and do things their own way.

On its 100th birthday, our municipality offers an unparalleled quality of life for residents. As a community, we are still very much in tune with our history. The Ferry Building at Ambleside has been refurbished into a gallery that promotes the best in West Coast art. Hollyburn Elementary School, the fi rst school in West Vancouver, consistently provides the same high level of education found in all our schools. Throughout West Vancouver there are many

reminders of the stories and the people who created our community. Their history lives in the present and will become a part of our future.

As you visit our Centennial Community Day celebrations, take a moment to refl ect on what West Vancouver means to you, and remember that West Vancouver’s story is still being written.

Congratulations West Vancouver,

Mayor Michael Smith

FERRY BUILDING LANDING12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The foot of the 14th Street Pier is home to the Ferry Building Gallery, a wood-frame building constructed in 1912. The Ferry Building opened as the Ambleside terminus in 1913 with the Shamrock Tea Room attached. For our Centennial Community Day Celebration, the Ferry Building will bring back their status as a terminus with boat tours taking passengers to and from Horseshoe Bay.
