14 World Meet of the Process Industry in India

What the Distinguished Speakers Said at the Inauguration

“India was growing at a factor

of around two times the global

GDP in the last few years.

The current estimates for

2009 clearly show that Indian

economy is expected to grow at

6 to 7 times the global economy

which is ample proof of resilience of Indian

economy”

Mr K G RamanathanSenior Advisor, Reliance Group of Industries.

“Industries like chemical

and pharmaceutical which

contribute fairly to the GDP are

following trends of recession.

Huge investments have been

made in sectors like cement,

chemicals, steel, automotives

and real estate amounting to 33% of GDP. In other

sectors like infrastructure, power, petroleum,

coal, and fertilizers, funding is a problem. These

industries contribute about 24% of the GDP. The

Government should give stimulus to these sectors

so that growth can be created in other sectors. To

keep the growth rate of the country at 7% over the

next couple of years, the economy would require 1

to 2 trillion USD”

Mr K VenkataramananMember of Board and President Operations, Larsen & Toubro Ltd.

“To become a true global player,

the industry needs to become

cost competitive and

leader in technology with

distinct process development

capabilities and develop

market and customer service

competencies that go beyond mere production and

distribution of products to become solution and

service providers”

Mr Bijoy ChatterjeeSecretary, Dept of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India.

“Past corporate successful strategies like cost

optimisation, organizational restructuring, mergers &

acquisitions and business process re-engineering have all

reached a point of diminishing returns. As the years pass by, sustaining business growth will be a daunting task. Success requirement of sustainable growth will be difficult and increasingly complex. Continuous innovation will be the name of the game.”

Mr Tapan RayDirector General, OPPI

“India’s role in the global

economy is becoming more

and more important as the

economy of this country still

shows a substantial growth”

Dr. Thomas SchueringHead Exhibition Congress DECHEMA eV.

“No doubt these are tough times

but this is also a period of great

opportunity for India”

Mr. Jasu ShahFounder and Chairman,

International Conferences 2009

EPC Conferences 2009 Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) industry provides a range of services in design and construction of plants for chemicals, petrochemicals, fertilizers, refinery and pharmaceutical industries. The goal of any EPC agreement is to manage the risk, prevent cost over-runs, and deliver the project on time. The conference discussed the challenges and opportunities in the turbulent times for EPC contractors be it hydrocarbon sector or infrastructure such as tighter budgets, schedules, global competition, very large project sizes, overloaded vendors, volatility in commodity prices and single point responsibility. The modus of executing the EPC contract involving the right enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and EPC LSTK approach for mega projects, cost conversion to LSTK and LSTK contract conditions were also discussed.

(L to R) Mr Pothen Paul, Mr S K Shirguppi and Mr K Venkataramanan

“After four years of a dream run, we are squarely in the middle of a slowdown. Fortunately, not being a export driven economy, the impact has been relatively less. The exports from the sectors such as Refineries, Polymers, Fibers,

Session - Marketing Scenario & Constrains : (L to R) Mr C J Parekh, Mr I L Budhiraja, Mr Arunabha Sen, Mr Deepak Mahurkar

“CHEMTECH forum is not just for owners, operators or suppliers but also for EPC industry. So we would

also want a fair representation in this forum. It’s more appropriate to be in this environment and CHEMTECH did a good job of bringing the

industry stalwarts here.”

Mr S K ShirguppiDirector - Operations, Rolta India Ltd.

“The economic situation of today is Economic Nationalization. Countries are trying to keep the

jobs and capital at home. There is reduction in cross border credits being lent out, unless there are prior contractual obligation. In many cases the contracts are being dictated

by the regulations and policies favouring the local contractors.”

Mr Deepak MahurkarAssociate Director, Price Waterhouse Coopers

“India’s East Coast Offshore region can offer tremendous opportunity for Indian EPC companies. Projected investments of USD 200 billion over the next 10 years, along the East Coast Offshore Region in India, can have a

multiplier effect of almost USD 1 trillion.”

Mr I L Budhiraja President, Petroleum (ENP), Reliance Industries Ltd.

“Public and Private oil companies come across various local barriers in India. Custom duty may vary up to 40.4 percent of CIF value. Purchase preference facility is given to public sector companies in India, which should be rendered

obsolete and Instead of added taxes that amount to huge financial costs, single tax figure should be

applied.”

“In the last 2-3 months what we EPC contractors are trying to stress upon the clients is to go for open book estimate and convertible LSTK with an intention of completing the work speedily and economically. The shift is dramatically fast from

the seller’s market to a buyer’s market.”

Mr Roberto Bertocco Vice President (Commercial) – Tecnimont S.p.A. Italy

“Present market condition requires EPC partnerships to strike a nice balance in managing projects and the risks involved. With shared risks, owners and contractors are moving away from contentious relationships to trust based relationships,

influenced more by contractual agreements that often decide the project’s success and its

subsequent performance. ”

Project Execution Management - An Evolving Science

“Multi location projects are the necessity of modern times and offer technical challenges at various stages of Engineering, Client Management, Project Management and Procurement. Different time zones, language barriers, cultural

differences and availability and willingness to move resources are the other key challenges faced

while executing such projects.”

Mr G Sathiamoorthy Director (Engineering & Process) Engineering & Designs,

Tecnimont ICB Pvt. Ltd.

“For multi partner and multi location projects it is important to understand the deliverables and what automation, integration and collaboration can do to increase efficiency of such projects. ”

Mr Kevin Gribbin Executive Manager, Intergraph

“Today business efficiency are being restricted by lack of man power which are being stretched to

the limits. We do not have sufficient numbers of people, suppliers who can meet the demands of delivering such projects. So we may need to

find more with less and exploit technology to greater levels”

Panel Discussion

( L to R) Mr Alessandrello Paolo, Mr U Dasgupta, Mr Domenico Romani, Mr B Narayanan and Mr Pothen Paul, Executive Chairman, Aker Solutions

“This slowdown should be looked upon as an opportunity and organisations should step back

and ask few questions to themselves such as are we fit for the future, do we have the best of products, technologies and efficient systems. It

gives time for the organisations to introspect and take necessary actions to be fit for the future.”

Mr B Narayanan Group President, Procurement and Projects, Reliance Industries limited

“Indian industry has come of age where one of the best ways of meeting client’s expectations could

be combining forces and look out for alliances and collaborations to manage and share the risk that would eventually result in a win-win

situation for both the client and the service provider.”

Mr U DasguptaExecutive Vice President, Upstream, L&T

“I personally refrain from concept like if we are going towards globalization we need to de-globalize,

if we are integrating, we should disintegrate. I refrain from associating a crisis to a step back. Organisations should revisit their business plans

and even in a crisis any competitive edge that other companies can offer needs to be integrated.

Organisations have to make painful decisions about jobs, but positive attitude is a must to forge ahead and stepping back is not an option.”

Mr Domenico Ro maniCommercial Manager, Downstream Petrochemical, Saipem S.p.A.

“Over the years the roles of vendors have developed and diversified. Today a company that is a service provider could be a customer for some other project. Concepts like competitors and partners are less rigid. This flexibility is important in the

current scenario of uncertainty. This is the time for organizations to step out of their comfort zones

and accept new technologies and challenges. When the future is uncertain, flexibility of roles is the best tool.”

International Conferences 2009

WATEREX - Conferences 2009 The Chemtech WaterEx International conference was conceived in 2009 as a platform to discuss the various aspects of this integral industry. India with its population of 1.1 billion has a rapidly growing requirement for purified water sector, which comprises of the Drinking Water segment and the Wastewater Treatment segment that is growing at a rate of 15-20% per year. The conference featured professionals and policy makers discussing pertinent issues such as Desalination, Membrane Technology, Recycling and Reuse, Effluent Treatment, Hazardous Waste Treatment, Nano science and other related topics for Water and Environment Sectors.

Inaugural Session “Climate change is a reality and is affecting the ecosystem. Himalayan glaciers is a water tower for the entire South Asia providing water for 30-40% of global population. Global warming causes 15% precipitation due to glacier melting causing

floods in the rivers, affecting the production of food grains. Rise in temperature even by 2% will

make the sea level to rise, contaminating the ground water. India has 4 % of world water resource and houses 17% of world population. With increasing population, water is going to be a scare commodity and hence needs to be recycled. We also need to think about rain water harvesting and desalination. In India 80% of water is used for agriculture. More than one third of the agriculture is carried out by using ground water, which is depleting at a fast rate. India has vast amount of irrigational land and our irrigation efficiency is only 16%. Hence we need to increase our efficiency of water management.”

Mr Suresh PrabhuMP and former Union Minister of Power

“Water and energy are the lifelines of industry. Energy can be derived from alternative sources,

but there is no alternative for water. Water is now a global problem and we have to take war footing steps to tackle this.”

Mr Yogen ParekhAssociate Director, Jacobs H&G

“Water is a critical and vital life force for any society, more so in our country. Whether it provides the

reaction media or is a medium of transportation and heat, water is the life line and an integral part of the chemical process industry. ”

Mr Jasu ShahChairman, CHEMTECH Foundation

“India will be worst affected by climate change and we need to sensitise people about the magnitude

of the problem by introducing water literacy at all educational levels so that we stop the wastage, contamination and imbalanced utilisation of

water.”

Water Augmentation & Recycling

“In 1950, we were water abundant region and water availability was 5000 cubic meter per

person per year, which has now reduced to 1050 cubic meter per person per year and we are becoming a water stressed region. In India,

current requirement of water is approximately 800 billion cubic meter that will increase to 1500

billion cubic meter by 2050.”

“In India due to various reasons there is increasing water shortage. India is having 116 percent of

global population but only 4 percent of global water. As industries are also facing water shortage, recycled waste water is a cheaper

source than any other source. Waste water management, in India is changing from end of the

pipe treatment to the recycling and reuse.”

Mr A K JindalChief manager Water Technology, Larsen & Toubro

“We have made various water conservation efforts in our complex to reduce our dependence

on external water resources. These include, internal generation of water from steam- jet refrigeration and waste water desalination and

reverse osmosis and nanofiltration applying pinch technology principle.”

Mr N H KhanTata Chemicals Ltd, Mithapur

“History of desalination goes way back to 1950 when the first desalination plant was set up

using carbon steel. Since then various materials of construction like clad steel, solid austenitic stainless steel has been used. 2003 was the

beginning of new era when duplex plates were used or the first time for desalination in Libya and

the plant is still running successfully.”

Mr Saby OommenOutokumpu, India

Waste Water Management

“With the rapid increase of Indian population/industrialization, there is a growing gap between

demand and supply of water. The Indian water sector is set to witness phenomenal growth with increased water consumption till 2025,

particularly in Domestic and Industrial sectors. The need of the hour is to have synergistic

approach and co-operation amongst all stake holders viz. Government, Industry, Communities, NGOs in managing Water resources.”
