NEW INTERNATIONAL AGENDA..On Sept. 25, 2015 world leaders adopted
the agenda for sustainable development for the period 2016-2030 during the UN sustainable development summit.

A road map for better future; a future that we all want
This agenda came after the positive results achieved by the MDGs.
The purpose of the Agenda is to address the main challenges facing humanity.
Agreement on this agenda was subject to extensive negotiation and wide consultations involved all
countries, international civil society organizations, stake holders and the people in general.
The consensus in adopting the agenda reflects the common interest of the international community.

COMPONENTS OF THE AGENDA 17 Sustainable Development Goals and
169 Targets as each goal have several targets.
The 17 goals are considered to be of universal high priority to improve people lives and achieve dignified, more secure, and more resilient livelihoods; equitable and fair world; and protecting our planet.

These goals are addressing challenges we are facing in three main domains of our life as human beings.
These domains are: Social Development Economic Development Protecting the Environment.

efficiency in consumption and production and endeavour to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation, in accordance with the 10-year framework of programmes on sustainable consumption and production, with developed countries taking the lead
By 2030, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value
By 2020, substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training
Take immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking and secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour, including recruitment and use of child soldiers, and by 2025 end child labour in all its forms

TARGETS, GOAL 8-CONTD. Protect labour rights and promote safe and secure working
environments for all workers, including migrant workers, in particular women migrants, and those in precarious employment
By 2030, devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products
Strengthen the capacity of domestic financial institutions to encourage and expand access to banking, insurance and financial services for all
Increase Aid for Trade support for developing countries, in particular least developed countries, including through the Enhanced Integrated Framework for Trade-Related Technical Assistance to Least Developed Countries
By 2020, develop and operationalise a global strategy for youth employment and implement the Global Jobs Pact of the International Labour Organization

THE FAMILY AND SDGS The family is important to the
development process, and to these new SDGs in particular:
Though the concept of family is not mentioned explicitly in the SDGs, it is part of many of them and some of the targets refer directly or indirectly to it.

IN THE WORDS OF THE UN SECRETARY GENERAL:
“As basic and essential building blocks of societies, families have a crucial role in social development. They bear the primary responsibility for the education and socialization of children as well as instilling values of citizenship and belonging in the society. Families provide material and non-material care and support to its members, from children to older persons or those suffering from illness, sheltering them from hardship to the maximum possible extent. [… ] The very achievement of development goals depends on how well families are empowered to contribute to the achievement of those goals. Thus, policies focusing on improving the well-being of families are certain to benefit development”.

LESSONS LEARNT INDICATE THAT:1.Child Poverty. The new promising approach to child poverty is two-generation approaches. Instead
of focusing in children and parents individually, a family approach is the most effective one. 2. Population Ageing. Active ageing within families allows people to realize their potential for
physical, social, and mental well-being throughout the life course . 3. Healthy Lives. A family-centered approach to health care can improve the quality of care and
help control rising costs, from prevention to chronic care. 4. Quality Education. When policies and programs are family-focused, they often are an efficient
investment of public resources for promoting youth school success and an effective means for achieving lifelong learning.
5. Unpaid Domestic Work and Care. Household production constitutes an important aspect of
economic activity which contributes in different ways in the national economic growth. 6. Domestic Violence. Gender equality and gender stereotypes, respect of environment and
many other values and norms, are learned in the family, and it is there where it should be first prevented.
7. Youth Unemployment. Work values and sense of productivity are deeply rooted within the
family system. Active family support will help young people to cope better in the world of work.

CONCLUSION Achieving SDGs will be a turning point in the
human history, where peace, equality, prosperity, social justice, and dignity of individuals and societies will prevail.
Each one of us has a role to contribute for this noble cause.
Family organisations are encouraged to develop their own strategies at the national and the international levels to positively influence the implementation of SDGs.
