Present…

Willy Wonka Jr.!

Brookside Elementary’s Spring Musical! Process Dandylyon Drama is an educationally based program that believes in including every child.                         Over the next 8 weeks we’ll learn how to audition, rehearse, and perform a musical. We’ll                               explore a well-loved story, Willy Wonka! We’ll learn basic acting, performance etiquette in a                           supportive and encouraging environment. We’ll top it off with props, costumes, lights, and                         sound.  Parent Involvement and Mandatory Parent Meeting This production relies on at least one parent of every actor to volunteer in some way.                                Opportunities range in skills and time commitment. Most are very simple and require only a few                               hours of your time. You will get to sign up for your preferred job at the Parent Meeting and later                                       via an online sign-up. One parent of each student must attend the Parent Meeting on                             Tuesday, February 26th @ 7pm in the BKS Cafeteria. Your student is welcome to attend.                             However, they must stay with the parent during the meeting. We are not allowed to have                               students wandering the school during the meeting.   Auditions Every student to sign up will be given a part in the show. We teach the students how to audition                                       as they audition and it’s a fun process. Students must be available for all audition days. Please                                 speak with the director individually to make arrangements if there is an unavoidable conflict.                           On Monday, March 4th, we’ll play lots of drama games to get to know each other and the show                                     and learn how to put our best foot forward.

Auditions will be broken up into two groups. Group A and Group B. Students will be assigned a                                   group on Monday March 4th.    Audition Schedule *subject to change based upon availability   Monday March 4th 11:45 - 3:30

All actors and actresses should come prepared with a memorized monologue (see selection                         included in this packet). Dandylyon Drama does everything possible to help students feel                         comfortable and ready to share their monologue. Auditions are closed to other students and                           parents in order to put the least amount of pressure on the students (however a PTA chaperone                                 is always present.) Students should also practice the music they learn on Monday and be                             prepare to sing a solo in a group setting.    Rehearsals Rehearsals will take place at Brookside Elementary in CAFETERIA, GYMNASIUM and MUSIC ROOM. Each student is required to have a pencil, a snack, a water bottle, a book/something to keep them busy during down time. Down time is also a perfect time to review previously blocked scenes, songs, and choreography with friends. A great attitude is required every day of rehearsal. Please wear comfortable and appropriate clothing; no short skirts, flip flops, high-heeled shoes, tight pants, snow boots, etc.  Conflicts and Mandatory Dates Please fill out the Conflict Calendar completely with anything that might conflict with rehearsals. We do our best to schedule your student for days that they are available. Your conflicts don’t negatively affect casting so please give us all the information you have and let us know when you might be expecting a sport schedule to come in. Actors will be called 2 to 3 times a week on average. Students interested in participating should at least be available 2 days

a week and for all mandatory rehearsals. In order to participate in the Musical, your students must be available to attend rehearsal on the mandatory dates so please make arrangements now. (See attached calendar.)   Communications The Brookside Musical Producers, Audrey Nicol and Kim Vance, will communicate with you via email from [email protected]. Please make sure that you provide your primary email address and any secondary email addresses of parents or guardians or caregivers that requires this information. Regarding any emergencies, the primary contact will always be contacted first. Feel free to contact the Brookside Producers at [email protected] regarding any questions or concerns regarding child absence/early or late arrivals, volunteer job or chaperone shifts, issues with lost script, or alternate plans for pick up of your child. All questions regarding the performance itself, such as casting, questions about script/lines, or song or choreography, must be directed to Dandylon Drama’s Musical Director, Kaelyn Langer-Mendonca at [email protected].

THIS PROGRAM IS SPONSORED BY THE BROOKSIDE PTA.

Dandylyon Drama & Brookside PTA Policies

2018-2019

Tuition & Refunds Refunds for tuition cannot be given after a child starts this Musical Program.   Scholarships For those who are having financial hardship, scholarships are available. On the registration form,                           please make sure to check the box that says, “I need a scholarship for my child’s participation,                                 please contact me.”  Drop Off and Pick Up ● We hope that all of our students will be in class promptly each day. Please let us know if your

child will be late to rehearsal or if you need to pick your child up early. ● Students may not be left unattended outside of class times. Students must be picked up

promptly at the end of rehearsal and be signed out by an approved parent or guardian.

Special Needs Dandylyon Drama Instructors are able to create ways for children with mild to moderate disabilities                             to succeed. Please write down any and all medications, disabilities and any physical, emotional or                             behavioral challenges your child may have and discuss them with your child’s Instructor prior to the                               first day of class. This information will make our class instruction more effective and your child’s                               experience more rewarding. All staff and Instructors follow Dandylyon Drama’s Confidentiality                     Policy, so your privacy will be protected.  Absence and Illness ● Instructors do appreciate notice if your student must miss class for any reason. Please alert the

Producers of this production if your student will be absent by email. ● If your child is ill, contagious and/or running a fever, please DO NOT bring him/her to class.   ● Dandylyon Drama Instructors cannot dispense medication to your child.   ● If your child has a condition that necessitates carrying and/or self-administering medication

during class time, please share all pertinent information with the Instructor prior to the first day                               of class.

Class Observation During the course of this program, all Musical rehearsals will be closed. We have found that students often participate more freely in class activities without parent observation. The Dandylyon Drama Directors or PTA Producers may ask you to wait in the lobby/outside of the Cafeteria or other assigned rehearsals space if you prefer to stay on site during Rehearsals. Parents are allowed to observe and may be asked to assist in class from time to time in certain classes if they are scheduled as a Chaperone for that particular day. Please do not bring other children with you if you are observing or chaperoning class.    Code of Conduct We at Dandylyon Drama value each and every individual. In order to create an environment where                               each student has the freedom to grow, both as a performer and as an individual, we do not tolerate                                     the following: ● Fighting with another student, staff, volunteer or parent ● Destruction or theft of Dandylyon Drama or school property or materials ● Disrespect towards oneself or others ● Use of inappropriate language and/or innuendo ● Racial or sexual harassment (including inappropriate physical contact)

Student Responsibilities and Expectations (Parents are expected to read and enforce these policies with their children)

We will do our part at home and in rehearsal to:

● Plan Ahead:  Arrive on time with required materials and completed work.  ● Behave Respectfully:  Treat teachers, parents, other students, and staff with respect at all times.

Respect the space you are in and keep it clean. ● Challenge Yourself: Strive to do your best work at every class, take initiative to stay ahead of

I understand that being in a Musical is being part of a team and that the whole cast is depending on my participation. If I do not do my part in these areas it can result in my part being cut from the Musical. I understand that disruptive behavior will be responded to with the following steps to ensure that all children enjoy and benefit from enrichment programs.

1. If a child is disruptive in an enrichment class, a phone call will be made to caregivers advising them of the problem and allowing them to address it with the child at home.

2. If a child is disruptive a second time, the child’s caregiver will be required to attend the next class with the child to ensure that the class is able to run smoothly.

3. If a child continues to be disruptive a third time, the child will not be allowed to return to the remainder of classes for that session.

I ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT MANDATORY REHEARSALS & PERFORMANCES ARE, IN FACT, MANDATORY AND ARE REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION- NO EXCEPTIONS!

We’ll take your answers and turn them into to something like this:

Becky Bright, 11, has always loved to sing and dance! She’s been in “Angel Alert” at Pacific Church and sings in the NW Young Ladies Choir. She also loves pizza, skateboarding, and watching ninja movies. Becky thanks her grandpa for always being there and her mom for driving me every day to rehearsals!

SUGGESTED MONOLOGUES FOR

“WILLY WONKA JR.” FOR YOUR AUDITION, PICK A MONOLOGUE THAT WOULD BE FUN FOR YOU!

The monologue you choose does not mean you are auditioning for that certain role. Choose the monologue that you feel most comfortable performing and put your own spin on it - make it your own and have fun!

Monologue #1

Ladies and gentleman, Wonka bar sales are up to over two hundred thousand an hour and this JUST IN. The fourth Golden Ticket has been located in Television City, California. Leaving only the fifth and final ticket to be found! We’re live at the home of Mike Teavee, the finder of the fourth Golden Ticket. Here’s Ms. Teavee now. Tell us about finding the Golden Ticket ma’am!

Monologue #2 (German Accent implied)

Ya, I just knew my little snausage-vausage Augustus would find das Golden Ticket! He eats so much candy-vandy that it vas almost impossible for him not to find one! In fact, you could say ve’ve been training hi for this day ever since our little pudgy-vudgey was born. Oh, ya! For der Junge to eat as much as Augustus he has to be trained from morning to night – eating all kinds of foods…

Monologue #3

We’ve had an early revelation and lost a child in the chocolate smelter. It’s a shame! – the boy really seemed to know about food. Alas, take Mrs. Gloop’s Poop to the strawberry dripping room and head him to precisely 102 degrees Fahrenheit…or is that Celsius?...no, Fahrenheit? Yes…102 degrees Fahrenheit! – but no higher – or he may spontaneously boil – and that would be a tragedy.

Monologue #4

Excuse me, Mr. Wonka, I just love your hat! It really sets off your eyes, but of course you have great taste. You know, I would simply adore a pink candy boat…and maybe one of those sweet Oompa-Loompas…Mr. Wonka, did you hear me? I sad I WANT a PINK CANDY BOAT! – AND an OOMPA-LOOMPA.

Monologue #5

I’m a gum chewer normally, but when I heard about Wonka’s contest, I laid off the gum and switched to candy bars. Now of course I’m right back on gum. In fact, I’ve been working on this piece for over three months solid. I’ve beaten records set by my best friend, Cornelia Prinzmetel. Hi, Cornelia…listen to this…that’s the sound of you losing…listen to it some more…

Monologue #6

Really? (tears open the candy bar and takes a bite) Mm .. .it's so good! A perfect blend of Belgian Dark chocolate and New World light, with subtle overtones of Moroccan espresso. Wonka's a genius! Thanks. I'd better get to school. Do you think I could have just one more? I'll pay for it. I think I'll share this one with my family ... Grandpa Joe likes the Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight, but grandma Josephina likes the Nutt-a-riffle. (finds the Golden Ticket) I found the Golden Ticket!
